Prediction 2024 Brownlow Medal contenders

So much is going to come down to who the umps favour for votes.

Neale and Cripps seem to get those few extra votes from the umps that someone like Bont doesn’t get.

Will be interesting to see what sort of run Daicos gets after being stiffed a bit last year.

People like JHF and Newcombe will most likely also poll extremely well as the umps seem to love them.

Daicos got stiffed a few times last year, so I expect the same this year and for him to fall short. Looking at the predictor, it's crazy to think he can get 35+ disposals at 70-80% DE%, a goal or two, and lead the game in clearances/contested possessions but still not be expected to get a vote. I doubt you would ever see that happen with Cripps or Neale.

I think Lachie Neale will win again.

Hard to beat him when he is miles ahead of other Brisbane players, and has that universal nice guy persona in the AFL.

No, mainly because he'd be the worst 3 time Brownlow medallist of all time. Last years one was a total laugh too
Imagine being the ‘worse’ 3 time Brownlow medalist, how depressing. Yeah a laugh- had a flipping ripping year it just that people have little tanties because they want someone else to win. Should already be a 3 timer by the way, your captain got a gift he didn’t deserve- knocks a bloke out by hitting him high and somehow still wins it, talk about a laugh.

Not Cripps fault Carlton has fat stacks to splurge on Queen's council lawyers. Neale himself admitted he didn't think he should have won the 2023 Brownlow on a ball magnets interview.

Getting 3 votes for a 20 disposal, 3 score involvement game against GWS was bad but also got 1 vote each against Adelaide and Pies for 23 and 22 disposal games where a number of players where more worthy of votes.

Was a fix and a half last year.

Does the favourite ever win?

Just as much chance umpires fave Lachie Neale wins another Brownlow.
The Favourite regularly wins.
2023: Favourite - Marcus Bontempelli. Winner - Lachie Neale (5th favourite)
2022: Favourite - Lachie Neale. Winner - Patrick Cripps (3rd favourite)
2021: Favourite - Oliie Wines. Winner - Ollie Wines (1st favourite)
2020: Favourite - Lachie Neale. Winner - Lachie Neale (1st favourite)

2019: Favourite - Patrick Dangerfield. Winner - Nat Fyfe (3rd favourite)

2018: Favourite - Tom Mitchell. Winner - Tom Mitchell (1st favourite)
2017: Favourite - Dustin Martin. Winner - Dustin Martin (1st favourite)
2016: Favourite - Patrick Dangerfield. Winner - Patrick Dangerfield (1st favourite)
2015: Favourite - Nat Fyfe. Winner - Nat Fyfe (1st favourite)

2014: Favourite - Joel Selwood. Winner - Matt Priddis (6th favourite)

It's becoming less common for the favourite to win it these days.

Am I remembering incorrectly that he got votes for a 15 disposal game? Or was that JHF?

That was JHF in the game against Geelong getting the 3 for a 13 disposal game.

Which was the weirdest 3 votes. Followed by Neale’s game against GWS.

The Favourite has won the Brownlow 6 of the last 10 times, but because they haven't won the last two, it's 'becoming less common'?

There were a few examples of Neale getting votes weirdly last year. Getting votes in round 8 on a 22 disposal game where he had zero influence, when Daicos had 38 + 2 goals and received zero votes, stood out then. The GWS game 3 votes were a laugh, too, as someone said. He's just a magnet for votes. If there are no standout players, he'll get the 1 or 2 every time.

Don’t understand the hate for Neale, absolute champion player.
Should be shooting for 4 Brownlows.

Hard to see the winner cracking high thirties , considering the two favourites are from teams just in the 8 and outside the 8, but who knows with the umps.

Still think Cripps wins by a bit though.

Happens every year. There's always a few bizarre games when someone gets votes they shouldnt have but then doesnt get votes in another game when they clearly should have. Judd was famously pulling votes from nowhere the year I think it was the year he won over Swan

Haha, yeah, Judd was a classic for that. The number of votes he got in games the Blues lost in 2010 was ridiculous. Swanny got shafted that year. For Judd to get the three votes over him in that game when the Blues lost by 12 goals was ridiculous. I may be old-fashioned, but players that get 30+ disposals and 2-3 goals should be in the votes. Yes, not every disposal is damaging, but if you have 25+ effective disposals as a mid-fielder, odds are a lot are.
