He got 9 more votes than any other player in 100 years. You can't tell me that is right.

What other clubs had a midfield that consisted of a single gun player, and was in the top 4 for most of the year?

Imagine if Sydney had the finish they had, but only had one of Warner, Guilden or Heeney (who polled 78 votes between them)?

The player you select wins it with 50+ votes.

There were anomalies (the votes for Cripps and Daicos I've already mentioned, plus LDU's racking up votes in games North got thrashed) but they were all Mids and they will all stand out to the Umps.

Its the way it is. You need to be the best midfielder, in a side that wins a lot of games (including being your sides best in close loses), and in a side that has no other gun mids to poach votes off you.

Everyone saying "no one's there to take votes off Cripps...."

In two of last couple of Cripps 3 vote games, Carlton lost both games and Nic Newman had 34 disposals and 12 marks, and 35 disposals and 16 marks and got zero votes...

Defenders dont get brownlow votes. No defender has ever won the Brownlow and none ever will.

Exactly why it should be called the Chas Brownlow midfield medal

It’s a joke unless the winner goes on to win a flag and a norm smith

Not really. It's the same thing every year. In order to get votes you need to be:

1. A midfielder
2. A gun
3. Stand out to the umpires
4. In a side that wins enough games.
5. In a side that has no-one else getting votes from you.
6. Be your sides best player in loses, particularly close games (to pick off the 1's and 2's).

Cripps had a consistent year, as a gun midfielder, in a team with no other gun midfielders (barring Walsh who had a down year), in a side that won a lot of games, and were he did everything he could in losses (most of which were close).

That's the way it works. No defender is ever going to win it, and for a forward to get close they'd have to kick 150 goals in a season (or have every midfielder in their team be shit, yet still win enough games to poll).

The Brownlow is not 'best player in the comp' despite what the award might call itself.
Looking like the love child of Grace Kelly and Paul Newman may also have its advantages.

What's objectively stupid about an opinion that Cripps wasn't the best player this year?
Cripps was the best individual player for his team, for the entire season, and that's why he won by the length of the Flemington straight. That's what the brownlow is all about .
What did stand out for me was the dominance of Sydney's midfield- those 3 , collectively , have dominated the season.
I wish Cripps had some friends to help him but he doesn't. Same with Daicos - he was 30 votes clear of the next best at Collingwood. That has to be a brownlow record surely.

Most who support Carlton celebrate the champ, most who don't, say what a s... award it is. That's it in a nutshell.
Most people seem to have no issues with Cripps winning, they are lamenting the winning vote inflation, and particularly well known players getting votes for fairly average games.

see the team tally for carlton... all Cripps.... no cripps no carlton
collingwoods tally only looks worse due to the massive amount of injuries during a large part of the year.

Newman from carlton should have taken WAY more votes from Cripps especially at the end of the season.

No votes for Darcy Cameron.... even in round 18 against geelong where he scored 147 fantasy points... and he got 7 coaches votes in round 22 against the swans...
Hahaha umps have no idea... change it to a panel and let the umpires umpire.

AFL need to make coaches award a bigger spectacle

Congrats to Crippa.

But if I'm being honest, I still rate Bont as a better player and thought he had a better season.

The Brownlow has lost a little bit of credibility for me, however I'm torn with that feeling because seeing Newcombe in the top 10 is still bloody fantastic!

Well done and well deserved to Crippa. Fantastic season.
Thought it was going to be a little closer between himself and Bont TBH.

Think a lot of fans are making excellent points regarding the amount of votes Crippa got. If it's a midfield only award (not literally, but you know) and Carlton don't have the deepest midfield going around it's obvious he's going to poll more.
Think they AFL should just create a defender and forward (no not Coleman - based on overall forward impact) award.
It may just give the AFL a chance to modernise how we view players impact re advanced stats etc.

Chief Can you move everyone here over to the bay to raise the quality level of banter. And move everyone except for zackah and I from the bay to the divvy van.

There must be some way to do that.

Watching all Carlton games this year, 10-12 BOGS was around the mark considering he had no mates helping his cause
Probably the most telling stat on this entire thread.
I think the Carlton supporters that watched every game of theirs , would know why the Vote total is so high.
and Patty Cripps deserves it ( for a second Brownlow Win as well so is a superstar of the comp )
The Bont being beaten by Adam T at the dogs was the surprise for me.

The first 18 players on the leaderboard are all midfielders.
Cripps polled 45 of a possible 69 votes.
What a joke of an award.
Basically the same players are in the top 20 for the coaches votes.

Coaches votes the only non-mid to get in the top 21 was Jezza Cameron.

Cripps and Daicos were the two stand-out favs, both predicted to get 30+ votes as they had dominant years for teams that won a good number of votes and had nobody competing with them.

The umpires got it bang on.

But for some reason fans are melting at the umpires for actually getting it "right"?

To confirm, the Brownlow is now the award for whichever of the best mids in the league has least competition for votes in their team.

It’s definitely time for a new system.

It's been that way for decades. That's why Gary Abblett Jr won two more Brownlows than his dad, despite Sr being a much better player.
