All awards have lost any real credibility with 2024 being the final nail.

Brownlow voting is a fiasco.

All Australian selections are a popularity contest for mainly Geelol players.

The Coaches MVP lost its previously unimpeachable credibility when McRae started giving max votes to N. Daycare no matter what, to get him over the line.

The Rising Star went to the 10th highest rated 21yo in the game, who was the 16th highest rated qualified player, who won basically because he couldn't get a game in his first 2 seasons on the list.

It seems by far the thing that lies least now is the AFL Player ratings that suffers no bias and take into account every offensive and defensive and contest action a player contributes.

Here are the 2024 top 10 by average player rating per game - obviously Petracca and Rankine missed quite a lot of games but it shows how they were otherwise tracking:

Coaches have enough on their plate to be worrying about giving votes.

Let’s get real … he just got 45 votes. Dusty got 36. Cripps polled in 17 games. Naicos polled in 18 games.

They’ll give the umpires back the stats from 2025 onwards, as they clearly have no idea without a point of reference post game (and fair enough too given they have umpiring to focus on)

It’s because they’ve stopped giving the umpires stats or ability to check their phones. So normally when Cripps has what they think is a good game, they check and see he’s had 19 touches at 47% and go ‘oops’, better not vote for Cripps. But in 2024… ‘3’ votes.

Thats why more than ever, contested centre square midfielders get all the votes because they are the only players all 4 x umpires regularly see.

I remember I had a book about the Brownlow when I was little and there was a year that KB got 45 votes - one of the years that each umpire voted separately.

Imagine now, with four umpires, Cripps’d get 180 votes!
