23 and even moreso 24 (1st pick 2nd night) will generate F1's, if we want to trade them out.

Blair has said, more than once, that this draft is worth trading into, would be silly just to trade out of it again just for the sake of contractual balance.

Pick 11 was an example. Hopefully the bid for Kako comes after our pick 11 and we'd be using 18 for the deal.

The goal would be turning something like 6, 11, 18 into pick 2 and 2 x 2025 R1(possibly 2 top 10 picks).

The culture isn't where it was 17-19, it was eroded away by leaders losing their way and leaving the club until it hit bottom this year.
I believe there is still enough of a base to rebuild an excellent culture very quickly, which will be super important as we bring in the top end talent over the next few years.

I think if we end up with Hotton on top of FOS and Lalor we have done extremely well but if Armstrong is there at 10 we should take him.

I'm no draft expert but I've loaded up on a lot of forward of centre types who can hit the scoreboard. Our scoring this year was a big issue, so we need to bolster that area big time.

Hannaford a good footballer and damaging, but his poor endurance could be his Achilles heel in the AFL. Shades of Daniel Menzel.

Sound reasoning other than the assumption that GWS are willing to trade their first pick out of tis draft. Or even their second. I imagine like us with our 20s picks they'll be sitting back waiting to see what someone offers for pick 21.

Agreed. That was in response to TD asking whether pick 2 + 15 was better or worse than 6 + 11 for NM. I think GWS beat us if they’re willing to deal for a F1 otherwise we are in a good position.

We're in a very strong position. Big bids (F1s) will come from clubs in the range 10-25 this year. For that reason, we want to have done good business with our first 3-4 picks.

Pick 1: FOS / Lalor
Pick 2: FOS / Lalor
Pick 6+10: Traded out to North for Pick 2 and F1
Pick 11: Harry Armstrong

I'd be very happy with that crop, even though I'm taking a key forward at pick 11.

We can then auction off the next 4 picks (18, 20, 23 and 24) for F1s from Gold Coast, Hawthorn and Essendon (who all have the capital to trade). If we like the offer, we take it. If not, we take the player on our board. It's not rocket science.

Walk away an expectation of 3-4 picks in the top 10 of the 2025 draft (us at #1, then death riding North Melbourne, Essendon/Melbourne, Collingwood). It's not inconceivable that we could end up with #1, #2 and #3 in 2025.

Do it for the melts.

Just a thought why would we give them 6 & 10 and then let them have the pick before us. Surely we would go 6 & 11 Really I think 6 & 18 with no F1 would be the better deal for both sides.

Over the next few days we're going back to the start of the season to fill in a few performances that were missed. Here we see Harvey Langford, still sporting the long hair, playing more forward than mid and taking a number of impressive contested marks. If his lack of pace does impact his ability to play through the middle at AFL level he can always fall back on his ability to impact the game as a medium forward.

After Essendon match a bid for Kako, offer our next available R1 (pick 11 for example) pick for Melbournes 2025 R1 pick(I believe they could finish below Essendon in 2025) & Essendons next available 2024 (40 or 46) depending on what they need to match Kako.

2024: 1, 2, 18, 20, 23, 24, 40/46

2025: 1, North R1, Melbourne R1, 19, 55

By doing this we split our haul across 2 drafts and give ourselves contract flexibility, as the CBA states that any player drafted inside the top 18 is signed to a minimum 3 year deal, while those outside the top 18 are signed to a minimum 2 year deal.

What that would mean is that picks 1 & 2 this year would be on 3 year deals and picks 18, 20, 23, 24 & 40/46 would all be on 2 year deals as they will fall outside the 3 year window. It would then mean that our 3 R1 picks next year would be on 3 year deals and 19 & 55 would be on 2 years.

Breakdown:
2024: 1 & 2 signed until 2027
2024: 18, 20, 23, 24, 40/46 signed until 2026
2025: 1, North R1, Dees R1 signed until 2028
2025: 19 & 55 signed until 2027

I’d be happy with Langford, good skills, good endurance, mobility, and an aerial threat. We desperately lack aerial presence around the ground. Can go forward and kick goals.
Strikes me as most like a Bont.
I don’t think his speed is a problem, his tank more important.
We also need speed so everyone else we draft needs to be quick!

I actually can’t believe he’s not getting more love on this board.

I don’t watch any u 18’s at all during the year but have watched the predicted top 10 or so’s highlights.

He is by far the most impressive. So balanced and skilful, great decision making. Pure class.

Hes one of the best gut runners from the testing and is every bit as quick as your bonts, Cripps, dusty, cotch, Taranto, Pendlebury, bartels, Sam Mitchell’s etc

** Marshall at Ten is unlikely but he is an absolute gun. Have watched him a few times and he’s up in the top few players in this draft. Brisbane is getting away with robbery.

Take Nth F1 and Possibly extra F1 for trading pick 24 into 2025. Giving us 2025 3x round 1 picks. All early hopefully plus 1 x round 2.

Guys. Just calm the farm on the pick trading. We already won! You realise that draft pick buying is coming in next year right? This is the year you don’t trade out of because you can buy picks next year onwards. Unless it’s a too good to be true north deal it won’t happen. Even a Melbourne future 1st is dangerous, despite cultural issues their list is in a prime contending age.

Agree with all of this. As much as I was originally in the camp of staggering out our hand a bit more, I'm leaning more towards hitting this draft as hard as possible

This draft is rated as being really even so the more picks the better. We will likely miss a few or have some not work out but that is applicable any year at any pick

We get these guys onto the list this year and come end of 2026 season they will all have had two preseasons and two full years on the list. Dow has been on the list like 5 years and has played 34 games. Some of these draftees could well hit that after two years.

If we stagger out more then we have to lower our expectations a bit on the crop of players who get drafted in 2025. We won't even know what we need until late next year anyway because we can address a heap of needs this year and then make decisions next year on what we don't have.

With all that said I think trading one of our picks for a first rounder next year is all we really need to do.
