Problem with getting to many mids is they will restrict opportunity for each other. You can't play 4 or 5 new young onball types. Top mids in the draft need games.
Nice write up, well done.I’ve waited a while to do my list of hopefuls for our current picks so here it goes. Tried for a nice blend with a real focus on leg speed and foot skills. It’s probably a dream for these picks to occur but this is what I believe to be a perfect result with the possibilities of who I think could be available. Anywhoo, feel free to pick it apart and call me a campaigner as much as you possibly can. cheers.
Finn O’Sullivan @pick 1
You can’t get a more well rounded footballer in this draft crop. The way this kid shakes tackles from the hips is Robert Harvey-esque. Stands up in big moments like the greats do. Has beautifully strong hands in marking contests and every possession this kid gets is a damaging one. You are looking at a kid whose potential is top 5 mids in the competition.
Jagga Smith @ pick 6
Jagga could well be gone by pick 6 but if he’s there you don’t even blink and take him straight into this footy club. He’s an accumulation monster who just kills you with a thousand cuts. This kid is like trying to catch rain…you can try but he just ends up everywhere. His ability to evade, turn and move around stoppage is breathtaking at times and you can’t just help thinking how does he manage to get his hands on it so often being his size. The combo of FOS and Jagga is lethal.
Xavier Lindsay @pick 10
Let’s for minute let ourselves imagine a half back line of Tom Brown & Xavier Lindsay. Let them both roam the ground and laser beam passes everywhere will be all-Austrian level duo.
That sort of ball use off half back would instantly change the future of this club.
Tobie Travaglia @ pick 11.
Add this kid to your club and you’ve got yourself a potential future captain and one of the most exciting line breaking footballers you can get. Doesn’t stop running and uses the ball intelligently nearly every time. Creates forward thrusts with ease. Intercepts beautifully and just keeps coming at you.
Joe Berry @pick 18
Not enough ‘o’s in smooth for J-Berry. This kid will light you up with forward craft, deft touches and just all round polish. Has leg speed to burn and developed a defensive angle to his forward craft as the year went on. Finishes his work beautifully and is a player who a coach just loves. You cross Dan butler and Dylan Moore and you get the jist. Has an air of confidence about himself and his work which gives you confidence hes got the belief. If there’s a Big game player in the making out of this draft it’s this kid.
Jobe Shannahan @pick 20
Might be wishful thinking, but if Jobe-wan-kanobe is available at pick 20 I’m saying a big yes. This kid produced at vfl level and just showed he has the forward movement to become a really exciting threat to your KP group. Had a bit of exposure in the defensive 50 at times but ultimately was settled forward. Looks to have the body shape and muscle definition to become a bit of beast. Has beautiful hands on the lead which will ultimately go really well with the beautiful kicks we are developing.
Kale Gerryn @pick 23
Two KP in a row, but two different styles in my opinion. Gerryn is a bulldozer. Crashes packs, hurts people and gives you the see you next Tuesday you absolutely love supporting. Fantastic size at 200cm and easily over the 100kegs. Beautifully balanced kick on both sides of his body and for a big man this is special. A WA kid, which has burnt us this year but if you develop this kid right you’ve got a match winner.
Copper Hynes @pick 24
Most likely dreaming for Copper to land here but hey we can all dream can’t we. Copper is a perfect combination of strength power and finesse. Creates for others as much for himself by his tenacious ability to break tackles and make things happen. A real exciting size at 190cm. An absolute Richmond tragic aswell who absolutely idolises dusty. Adding this kid gives you versatility up forward and someone who can swap through the middle to give mids a rest.
Cotchin was seen as a top 2 pick for a lot of that draft year IIRC
As I'm no expert and have formed opinions base on the preachings of others in the drafts and trades board I'll give a selection of players I think would be alright with our picks:
Pick 2 - Cotchin/C.Morton/Masten.
The first 2 pick themselves based on the fact nearly every phantom draft I've seen has either of them at 2. Weaver is a wrap for Masten and from what I have read would be a handy addition to the midfield. Any of the 3 would be a fine start to the draft.
So what are we doing next year, playing TT in the twos?
For the kids to develop properly we need a) to play them and b) for the midfield to have a decent composition. Otherwise they'll learn a bunch of bad habits from being in an uncompetitive unbalanced midfield.
It's not just players you're developing, but the game plan, which requires having the right pieces in place.
Also big-bodied midfielders tend to peak early in their careers, before their bodies are too beaten up and they're too slow. So you can draft them later in your build. JH and TT both arguably peaked in 2019.
This idea we give them 7 year contracts then draft their replacements who will peak before the players they're replacing have served out their contracts is pretty crazy.
Happy to take Lalor if the recruiters think he's the best, but you can't just ignore team composition.
Safe as bricks and mortar ?
Looks like there was debate about 2 to me
Lets take the most extreme example
To be honest I don't even know what you guys mean by unbalanced? Effectively we're too big in there so we need a smaller player?? Why??
If you want someone to run real hard and rack up possessions, well Taranto can run all day, he's the fittest player at the club and thats been his career. It also ignores Prestia. They can both do the defensive grunt work if needed as well.
What we lack in there is class and pace. Jagga adds class and Draper adds pace, FOS offers both and Lalor offers us genuine strength and power that we used to get from Dusty.
Make a game plan to fit your players not the other way around, as Dimma worked out. Especially in a leagues when the draft can limit your choices at any given pick compared to man city being able to buy an entire squad to fit pep's game plan.
Did you forget 2023? TT's most coaches votes in a season.
Ah yes i remember how famously Dustin Martin won his brownlow at 27, Patrick dangerfield at 26, Fyfe his second at 28 and patrick cripps his second at 29... all really struggling to peak when they reach the age when most pro-athletes are expected to peak from 26-30.
We gambled and they gambled on 2022 not being our last hurrah, it unfortuntely was, but they won't be the first pro athletes to miss a title window with a bad trade. What would be crazy, is try to plan our futures around them when we just finished dead last and lost 3 of our top 6-8 players.
We have 8 first round picks this year, we will have at least 2 and maybe 3 next year. If you want a small to run all day or whatever it is that will balance our midfield get Lindsay or Moraes or Dattoli etc... or balance it next year or the year after that when a Jagga type falls to pick 5-12ish as they often get picked there. But with the best picks take the difference makers, thats where its easiest to find them.

i would take the third one, I also assume this is not possible and some of the required trades cannot be done, not because of value but other clubs want this and that and will not budgeWhat draft hand is better

I think it is a pro North article frankly, ticked off by AFL HQThat is one of the worst written, contradictory articles i've ever read...... "However, as previously alluded to, this November’s draft isn’t like the others, meaning the Tigers may have to pay a bigger price if they really want Pick 2."
The ball's 100% in our court. North slit their own throats coughing up pick 25 for a teeny, old borderline dud hbf on big coin. They could've picked up a superior HBF kid on minimum chips and got 200+ games out of him. If North still had picks 2 and 25 they would've had trading partners and options galore including us. They've stuffed up because they're morons who can't plan and organise ..... I just looked and in their last 4 national drafts they've only taken 2 out of 20 selections over 190cm's. All 7 of the top 10 picks in those 4 drafts were mids. How stupid must your list manager be? They knew this year was a midfield heavy draft and have left themselves wide open. You'd think having a nose like an Aardvark Rawlings that his brain would get ample oxygen. We're blessed to have 8/24 top picks in a stacked draft leaving 16/24 top picks to the remaining 17 clubs. Blair Hartley needs to be ruthless and think of themselves as predatory lenders like cash converters or Tony Soprano. Only do deals that heavily favour us and bleed all the other clubs dry in every single deal or just take the pick. No more bloody Mr. nice guy!
3 things Law la dose that Dusty couldnt be Farkq'dOne of my favourite things about Lalor that I think is being understated is his defensive and tackling pressure. If he ain’t winning the ball, he’s tackling. Not just waiting out the back for a cheapie. Bloke is a beast at the coal face. I’m all aboard
no way, surely we are not that dumb but we did throw away 32 etc.. for nothingWe can't use 8 picks. That's the issue. I hate what we've done re: Colina. Dump him.

Classic RT: "I'd be equally happy with either of these two duds or this all-time great. The Cotchin-lovers might say I'm a ****ing clueless nuff-nuff for saying that but that's just their opinion and mine is that we really can't lose with any of these three and my opinion is just as valid as theirs."Looks like there was debate about 2 to me
