I like heaps of stuff. You just don't notice because none of it's yours.
Unlike some I don't post for likes, I post for discussion.
I'd love to be wrong about this but I can't see us making finals in the next four years. By then Tarranto and Hopper are in their twilight I would have thought. If I was Blair I'd be building this list now with that in mind. I think Tarranto and Hopper are going to be great players to have around to set standards, drive culture and protect the kids from being smashed but unfortunately I think it's highly likely we don't win our next flag with them in the side.
Odds are you're right, but you just never know. A bit of dynamism to our midfield that allows us to move the ball more aggressively that we were able to in 2024 could provide a spark that sees us become more competitive that we could be.
We are starting again, get the best two for 5 years from now that will be at the heart of our midfield with the high high picks we have this year. In 2-3 years time when our 1-5 picks become 5-12 picks start balancing our dynamic duo from this year.
What if our recruiters believe that Smith & Draper were the 2 best pure midfielders in the pool? Just because posters like particular players doesn't mean our recruiters think the same.

When you look at performances across the 2024 season those 2 are among the most consistent players in that top 7 group along with Langford. Yet for whatever reason they are seemingly dismissed by a few posters on here as not being good enough for us and that staggers me.

I questioned your motives for drafting those 2 for balance, not who you chose.

We should not be drafting for who fits with Taranto and co, nor should we be drafting for next year or the near future. Draft the best midfielders we believe can to be the central part of our midfield in 5 years.

No one dismisses them, they’re all in that top 6 group. Some of us just see similar floors for the top 6 but different ceilings for Lalor and FOS. Get the highest ceiling players early where it’s easier to find them not hoping to find them in the teens and twenties where your chances drop exponentially.

Edit: will add that I think it’s interesting that you justify picking Jagga and Draper by claiming balance. I think deep down you know who the top 2 in this draft really is.

If we rate Smillie at 3, then I don't want to trade 6 if he's gettable there.

I'd be pretty happy with 10 for 13 and 29, and then trade 23 and 24 on the night for juicy F1s. I'm pretty angry that we've already committed to taking Colina as a Cat A rookie. It limits our options for what we can do on draft night re: list spots.

Why? What has he shown? He runs a good time? Whoop de ****in doo.

Imagine getting North's F1 with pick 2, for pick 6 & 11 and then swapping it back for another pick in the top 10

Would be hilarious

Not that id want to, id prefer we didnt bother but was just wondering.

I just cant see why we need pick 2.

Lalor seems no 1, as he should be IMO but the next best player is no standout. I want FOS to jump out at me and demand we pick him, but I just dont see it so why bother.

There isnt even a pick 1 standout, let alone pick 2 FFS
I have no issue with getting pick #2 and would love to get the Lalor & FOS/Jagga double but not in Favour of losing a precious 1st round selection.

Blair must be extremely confident that a player we want will be available at pick #6 for him to be so determined to keep that pick and hold it so tightly hopefully he thinks it will be #1.Lalor #2.FOS #6.Jagga

But my preference would be #2 + F1 from North for #6 + #10/#11

1. Lalor
6. Smillie
10. Lindsay
11. Hotton
I’d be ok with that. Good mix of power, pace and skill. 2 with X factor goal kicking. Players that can play multiple roles.
If Armstrong or Tauru avail @ 10/11, might have a tough choice.
Hotton - his highlight package is very ordinary - Hannaford blitzes him in his highlight package

My personal top 2 have been Jagga and Draper since the end of the champs and Jagga I liked from earlier than that. I have conceded that Lalor and/or FOS are likely to be taken before them both.

FWIW I believe both Smith & Draper have the highest floors among the top group in that you know what you'll get from them most weekends when it comes to their performances. That is why I see them as better complimentary pieces to our current group. They're both the type that can come in from R1 and have an immediate impact in the midfield, while I see Lalor and FOS being more likely to start outside the middle and having cameos across their first year.

So given that we're starting from ground zero in terms of our future midfield, I prefer the option of taking the more sure thing to begin the build and then look for the game changing types once you have the core established, but that's just me and I have no issue with others preferring the alternative path.

Perhaps it is the memories of the 2004 draft where we went after who we thought were the 2 best players in the draft and watched as the Hawks went and got their foundation pieces in Buddy and Roughead who were keys to their premierships, while our 2 watched on

80% of posters on bigfooty would know more than this bloke but have to give him credit for having the courage to put himself out there.

* The part where he talks about the crows is funny as now the crows have opened up another 2 list spots

Yeah he’s always a couple days behind

lol Franklin was highest risk player in the draft, he went at 5 for all the reasons you are worried about in FOS and Lalor.

Should probably remember the outcome of 07 and 09 where we took the high upside Cotchin over the sure things in Masten or Morton, and the unknown from nowhere Dusty over Cunnington (and would have taken 1 over Scully).

Sure things/high floors at 1 are pointless Murphy, Scully, Swallow, Whitfield, McGrath, Rowell etc…
