It's really not the ideal range if that's where the Smith pick ends up, it's a tad depressing actually. More ideal if we had a pick in the top 15 as I think there's a slight drop off in the draft around the first 18 or so picks. This is really where you start to see some bigger faults in some of the midfielder types, apart from a Hotton if he was to actually go in this range which I guess is possible.

We might be better off going for a flanker/pocket in this range like an Oliver and looking at a mid later in the draft. I guess we could trade up a few places.

Getting up into Lalor’s range would be ideal. Can play forward with stints in midfield similar to Rayner which is perfect for a few years whilst we still have Treloar / Libba

Also really want Travaglia, can play half back with Dale until a midfield spot opens up. Has Richards written all over him.

Joe Berry is also a very exciting talent, genuine goal kicking small forward who can also play up the ground. Has had some runs in the midfield at times.

Harry Oliver sounds great, ticks all the boxes for a small defender. Would be ideal if we get multiple firsts as we need to top up the midfield as well.

Mentioned on this thread earlier. Has a few fans on here. I think we simply have to draft another small defender this year

A Berry and Oliver combo would be good. Given we likely will not have a sniff at one of the better midfielders. Both will address a need as small forward and defenders. And if we can land a couple of trades with pace like O'Driscoll and Peatling, I think we'd have done pretty well. Still need to get a damaging center bounce specialist though.

If that'd what we wanted it should be geelongs job to work it out not ours
I agree with you but look what happened with Dunkley. It's only a matter of time before we get screwed over so we need to plan for when it happens. If we can manage to get a pick in the early teens it's win for us

I wonder if trading with the Suns for our old pick is a possibility. No a huge jump but would keep us more in the tier where the better midfielders are. Collingwood are apparently asking for it for their trade with them, but it's far too much for Noble. Turning the Geelong pick back into that pick may well be doable.

Suns have 5516 points (Pick 1 worth 3000), and 8 picks. They don't need picks or points unless Lombard bursts into the top 10. I see them making moves for Rioli from the Tigers, and still have plenty left to cover Lombard. I don't think they NEED anything. Unless they do a good will kind of trade, so 12 isn't "wasted" by being eaten up.

Bad year for trade up options sadly.

They do have fair few academy selections next year at least 4 at the moment. Uwland the main one is a high end talent. The others could be worth somewhere around a late first or 2nd round. I think they will want some future picks.

If we are planning on drafting a key defender I don’t think we should look any further than Clancy Dennis with one of our later picks.

One of the key takeaways from this finals series so far is the importance of genuine small forwards - and elite ones at that. Clearly this is an area of our list we want to strengthen and should be a real point of emphasis leading into the draft.

Weightman and West both had good years, but neither play as genuine crumbing smalls. I think there is room in the team for either VDM or McNeil as that 7th forward off the bench, (purely from a defensive pressure perspective) but certainly not both.

I think there is a role for Arty at AFL level moving forward. Didn’t have a great game yesterday but has looked good at times this year moving up the ground. Clarke’s tenure at the club thus far has been underwhelming. I’m not ready to give up on him just yet, but will want to have an excellent 18 months to avoid the axe.

Finding that missing piece of the puzzle; a genuine small forward that complements our mix of both smalls and talls, is absolutely essential. Disappointingly he’ll probably be just out of reach with Geelong’s first rounder, but Joe Berry would be a seamless fit in our forward line. Genuine combination of crumbing, goal sense, X-factor and the ability to play higher up the ground. Certainly wouldn’t be against trading up on draft night to select him.

Failing that, Jesse Dattoli and Jasper Alger are others that we should be keeping our eye on.

Whilst I do agree that half back is also a pressing list need, the chances are we can find small defenders later on in the draft. I’ve been pretty vocal on wanting Harrison Oliver, however he’s been bolting up draft boards recently and I think we’d be reaching slightly taking him in the first round.

I wouldn't be surprised if Carlton take him at pick 11.
Then again, maybe it's traded to get Houston?

At that range if not Berry, possibly Hotton might still be on the board
I can only see Hotton sliding from here, through no fault of his own. Someone may get a bargain in the early 20s with him.

Hannaford has looked lively and could be worth a shot with a mid range to later draft pick if he lasts that long.
Berry would be very nice but probably gone before we get a pick in.

Given Hannaford’s last month or so, he may be pushing top 30 now. Played down back the first half of the year and then kicked 20 goals in the 8 games when shifted forward including 6 goals last week. He beat a pretty good player in Lachie Jaques too. He’s definitely the type we should be after. Very good defensive intent that likes to tackle and is a good tackler. Has an aggressive streak and can play up the ground as well as deep. He could potentially play as a lock down defender as well, has all the attributes for it and athleticism.

Don't disagree.
We currently have pick 32 so perhaps there is a chance there, however again Carlton have pick 31 and I wouldn't be surprised to see them go after a small forward or two.
