Yeah I'd say we do have the worst tall stocks in the league. Coupled with the worst small forward stocks.

The Johnson pick, instead of a small forward, really makes no sense.

Mentha will be listed as Cat B Rookie today and he's a small forward.

Did play alot of games off half back for Gipplsand Power this year though.

Love Mich, lives to play the contrarian but as soon as the club goes away from convention

In a game of fast footed small forward fleets who pressure and lock the ball in, we decide to load up on project lumbering forwards

(FWIW I do agree that our project/average tall forward fetish is getting a bit out of hand)

We needed to bring in slow lumbering forwards to replace the slow lumbering forwards we recently lost.

I will lose my shit if heading into next off season some nuffie says “DeEs NeEd a KeY FoRwaRd, TOm LyNcH for 2026 F1 MaKeS SenCe”
The thing is that we probably do need one (one that can play at an AFL standard). We just have a bunch of them that are VFL standard, hoping to get lucky and one of them comes good.

Maybe they play on combining 5 key forwards into one ala Voltron?

Seems like a scattergun approach and just hoping one sticks at this stage.

Too beholden to an out dated game play. Really wish we had just gone the dynamic forward mix of JVR with 2-3 mediums and 2-3 smalls and a swingman type tall who can pinch hit in the ruck and then forward or back as part of a rotation or in case of injury.

JVR, Fritsch, Koz and Chandler as mainstays. Trac and Langford rotating. Melk, Spargo, Kolt depending on form/matchups. Focus on pressure, fast ball movement and generating mismatches.

It's rare to take that kind of player in the main draft instead of a pre-season supplemental or rookie draft, but what the hell.
If our tall stocks are so thin that we need to bring in an undersized crash and bash style backup ruckman in case Gawn gets injured - and yes our tall stocks are that thin - then why not use pick 70 on it.

Surely we see one or 2 of these project forwards playing as backmen and plan on training blokes like K Brown, Woey and Sharp as potential small forwards.

Reckon our two blokes will have a club PR person talking them through safe Mad Monday outfit choices at the end of season. Just look like a couple of classic country lads.

If I've got it right, incredibly, no Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander players were taken in the National Draft (first time since the draft started in 1986). The 'why' is probably a discussion for another board, but there's been a noticeable drop off in Indigenous participation at the top level.

We'll be adding Ricky Mentha today though, and Malakai Champion is also a chance to be picked up.

I could have sworn they mentioned on the coverage about one of the boys having aboriginal heritage... might have been the Hawthorn academy kid who was taken late on.

You could be right, it would explain the NGA ties. I wasn't watching the live coverage last night, but there had been a couple of articles saying that Mentha and Champion were going to be the only Indigenous kids taken.

Quite a severe aesthetic contrast between the St Kilda pair and the Melbourne pair. They went for the blond baby-faces and we went for the dark-haired people who could be 28.View attachment 2172611View attachment 2172612
I don't know if it's an image thing, but the saints have always stuck out in my mind blonde haired guys playing for them when they really haven't had that many. Same with Sydney

Yeah I'd imagine we have to try one as a backman - Kentfield or Fullarton maybe?

I'm hoping Petty plays back, so he and May and Lever (mainly) play in the AFL team and McDonald, Adams + 1 other KPD play VFL.

Then up forward, it's JVR + One other KPF in the AFL (Turner or Jeffo) and then in the VFL we have Cambell/Verrall rucking and two key forwards.

What is the obsession with drafting classic country lads? They just bring terrible music with them.

When are we going to start drafting slender intellectuals in fashionable specs who read French poetry and fascinate women from an early age?

We drafted one of the latter at pick one a few years back.

He also liked swimming.
