same thing happened with Luke Jackson. we wanted a top 5 pick, top 10 pick but had to settle for picks in the teens. the problem is ours, not Adelaide's.

And at the trade table Lamb has shown to be pretty weak the last couple of years. Sold Jordon for cheap, paid overs for McAdam, didn't get enough for Jackson.

Jordon was a free agent.

What tricks has Sparrow got though? What's gonna make him not only hold a spot in the midfield, but do well there? Maybe we haven't seen enough of him in the true mid role to know, but I haven't seen anything that stands out other than a vanilla mid who'll get 20 touches and not do much with it.
Its normal for players to 'stand-up' when called upon, in times of need... or when other seniors step down.
Accepting new leadership roles.

He Sparrow, has the strength and speed combo to let rip. But has been brought along so far, as the 2nd string backup to Viney and the other starting mids.

I do like the way our inside mids have operated over the recent years, apart from the going wide at all costs concept.

I prefer our fast breaks from the centre, where the likes of Sparrow, Petracca, and Oli when he carries the ball... come into there own.

I think it is a coin flip. An injury to Gawn or May will torpedo our season, we don't have anyone that can cover for them. I don't have a lot of faith in the current fitness boss.
If you think an injury to either ends our season you can't rate us anyway.

We have more bargaining power when he is under contract, but we also have 0 bargaining power the following year, which will factor into it too.
Bargaining power isn't really a factor in free agency compo. I'm struggling to work out what point you are trying to make.

ohh I didn't realise, would Petty be a free agent I.e. we'd get compo and wouldn't have to trade? I can't keep up with the rules these days
Petty will become a free agent at the end of his contract. If he was a Free Agent in the last trade period we would have gotten band 1 compensation for him based on the money Adelaide were offering. Considering how KPP's go at a massive premium right now I expect they will continue to offer him a pretty big contract provided he is able to get fit again. If it's anywhere close to the threshhold for Band 1 we will figure out a way to get it over the line as North did with Mckay. FA compo is the easiest thing in the world to rort.

If Adelaide wants him sooner than that they will have to pay up.

Wouldn’t band 1 for us still be like pick 15?

Yes but Crows aren't offering much more than that at the moment anyway so why bother trading him? Who knows where we are in two years time. Could completely fall off a cliff meaning we get better compo anyway.

Pick 15 is gross. Adelaide would've coughed up 2 first rounders for him this season I reckon. 2 years is a long time though, a lot can happen.

Adelaide didn't have 2 first rounders and I reckon we would have done the deal if they had

That's a nice fantasy, but you could just look at what was actually reported by journalists at the time instead of making stuff up.

Seven’s Theo Doropoulos confirmed Adelaide offered pick 14 and wantaway forward Shane McAdam for Petty.

It's a pretty simple equation. The offer from Adelaide is about what we'd get for him as a Free Agent if we continue playing finals, if we drop off the compo is much better and we were right to hold him. If we keep playing finals we've basically gotten another two years out of him anyway and lost nothing. If they offer more for him at the end of this year we can take another look.

The ball is in their court if they want to convince us to release him.

what are you on about. I said 'I reckon' which means 'in my opinion'. that's not making stuff up.how can you not follow this? Melbourne said a straight up 'no to Petty'. This is well documented. The crows first offer was a first rounder and Shane Mcadam. Considering Shane Mcadam was traded for a 2nd rounder, we know that Adelaide's first offer was essentially a 1st and 2nd rounder. In my opinion, Adelaide would've said yes to 2 first rounders if Lamb had of pushed for it.

I've seen no evidence to suggest that Melbourne even engaged in trade talks for petty so to suggest that a 1st rounder and McAdam was Adelaides final offer is a little naive.

You've come up with a fake scenario and saying we messed up. So yes, it's your opinion that is based on a scenario that you made up.

Here's why that scenario makes no sense.

If Adelaide wanted to offer more they could have. To suggest we could have gotten another first rounder for Petty if Tim Lamb had just heard Adelaide out is laughable. Like they put their first offer on the table, we knocked it back and Adelaide were just like "oh he sounded really serious, better not bother him any further."

It also doesn't make sense when you consider how Adelaide held out until the final day of the trade period to finalise the McAdam deal, despite the 2nd round pick offer coming in days before. They were doing that because they were hoping we would fold on Petty.

why would we fold on Petty. it was pretty clear that was never going to happen. Lamb made it pretty clear that we were not going to entertain anything for Petty.
