Adelaide would have watched last year thinking they dodged a bullet.. why we didn’t simply move him to the backline had me stumped.
Yeah they clung on to the idea way too long, he always looked better when he was playing backline. Thankfully they've come to their senses it seems.
I'm happy we kept him, will be a great full back replacement for May. Just annoyed we played him out of position all year because he had one good game as a forward.
Hopefully he can return to his best, he's still young.

Oliver is going to be too hard to get off the books unless he has a big season, which probably means we won’t want to trade him.
The reports of his contract size absolutely makes it hard to move him. If he gets back to his AA best we’d be wanting to keep him and others will need to cough up too much. He seems to be in a good space now so hopefully a big year.

I couldn't find the right thread for this, but didn't the dees offer up 3 first round picks in order to select Bailey Humphrey? I know he's only 20 but that's a very steep offer that is, at this stage, looking like it would've been a disaster trade offer. Then fast forward to this year and we're offering 2 first rounders for Dan Houston. I really don't know where the recruiting team are at and where they see our list etc.

While I agree with your sentiment, we finished top 4 two years in a row and were a year removed from a flag. Bailey Humphrey would have slot right into our side as we loaded up for another flag tilt.

Instead, we got Matthew Jefferson...

I'll always support swinging for the fence to try and win the next flag, unlike some of the conservative types around here who want to make safe and sensible list moves and finish 11th.

Now we are doing a mini rebuild. Dan Houston is a terrific player, but I don't think the reported 2x FRPs would have been good value for us. I think we are 1-2 years too late with adding Houston.

Haven't finished top 4 since the flag year

Now we have Disco Turner in the goal square, who is going to make a career out of having one good game on Anzac Eve.
I wouldn't have taken pick 10 for Petty at the time either. He's shown how good he can be when playing his best in defence and when fit.

Turner is already a decent player. Very agile and attacks the contest hard. 17.7 in 13 games is fine. so hopefully he can kick at least 30 next year.

I personally think it's defensive pressure. the 2 basically 100 point smashings from Freo, the smashing from WCE and almost losing to North, our defensive pressure was non-existent. It was a complete lack of effort and accountability.

I don't think it is ALL on the pressure part, but it definitely contributes. Goodwin being obsessed with playing a tall F50 certainly doesn't help.

I think Turner has looked ok up forward and there’s plenty to work with there. Petty back is great move. And I think we need to judge whether we should have traded him next season. Pick 10 sounded good but it was pushed to 12 by the looks of it. Phoenix Gothard was that player I think.
Pick ten for a good young key back who had also kicked 6 in a game for a team in the window would be a shocking trade.

I'll always agree with not moving him on, no matter what hindsight says.

We have made a shit tonne amount of bad list decisions but not bringing in speed and agility forward of the ball this off season will be one of the biggest. While top teams are loading up on this type of “hokball” players we decided to zag and head into 2025 with the slowest forward line in the league.

Other than a VFL standard Chandler, a now midfielder / suspended Pickett and perennially injured Spargo (who is also slow) we have sweet **** all of anyone to apply pressure forward of the ball.

Will be watching closely in round 1 when Chandler has a spell on the bench at the rebounding defenders feast out on ground balls using foot speed to cut us up while plodders like JVR, Fritsch, Jefferson and Melksham fall over there feet trying to apply defensive pressure and lock it in. Meanwhile we opt to have like 8-9 wingmen on our list.

Smart opposition coaches would deliberately lose center ball ups just to get it into there rebounding defender hands.

Speed (and agility) in our front half is definitely needed, though to be fair it was more important from the back half and through the middle and we’ve gone and got exactly that with Windsor, Smart and Lindsay.

Yep, it only looks bad not accepting that trade now coz the coach is a stubborn tall forward structure ****ing weirdo. He was played him out of position the entire season (apart from against Hawthorn when May went off injured and what do you know Petty looked great in D50) while coming off a serious foot injury which limited his entire preseason.

Surprised we didnt sell low this offseason on Petty like we did Grundy last year.

Hopefully the coaches do as well
Sounds like they might move Windsor to a back flank this year, so between Windsor, McVee and a rotating Rivers/Lindsay/Howes/Bowey/AMW I can see Salem making way for younger set.

I like Salem, but we need speed from the back half so yeh I can see him not being in the best 22 every week for sure.
