Adams is on a three year deal and we paid pick 33 for him.

My mind absolutely boggles. Whoever did that contract should be sacked tomorrow.

He's absolutely cooked . Too slow..not AFL standard.

Two more years left
He can impact in bursts in the midfield or run with role on slower mids as we've seen.

I just don't think he can be a main mid as much as some expect. I think of the 4 games where he was at 40% or more of centre bounces, he had 11 clearances in total.

Maybe his off season can focus on his forward craft and trying to get a bit more burst into his legs, is still going to be a useful backup and might be a regular sub to come on and impact against tired midfields (if Parker is gone, you don't have the risk of both being on at the same time).

Statistically Warner is one of the best in the league at breaking tackles. He is also usually a very accurate kick, especially at goal.
If he could stop bouncing the ball as soon as he gets it, which allows opponents to close in and make him panic, as well as putting in more defensive efforts in first halves (instead of jogging after players or waiting for others to crack in and get him the ball) then yeah, I'd be fighting hard to keep him.

Warner is an amazing player. Suggesting otherwise is nonsense.

If we grab pick 3 via the Warner trade I’d be probably leaning at the best mid and that’s one on the inside but the best KPD will be there might be too hard to refuse.

Like a few talls in our current picks Shanahan, Whitlock etc

Was the Lions best in the first quarter on Saturday he does a bit of Mr Ego out there him and Blakey don’t know when to just be smart out there

Did I suggest otherwise?

He's an amazing player who often plays a brilliant quarter or half, but leaves it up to others for the rest of the game. If he was more consistent, then we might not need his cameos to get us over the line (or might not be too far gone when he starts playing well).

If he stays, I'd try and shift him out of centre bounces until late in quarters or the 2nd half. Give Sheldrick, Cleary, Campbell a go as the 3rd mid behind rotations of Rowy, Heeney, Mills.

He also was probably our best player in the 2022 Grand Final and had an amazing year all round.

Judging him on one game where he was no where near the worst player we had that day is hardly fair.

Thing is tho we would be hoping pick 3 turns out to be as good as Warner.

The problem with Warner is the players around him

It's not one game. It's been a consistent theme throughout the year.

He's so good in bursts and highlights reels, people forget about the other 50 or 75% of the game.

Nowhere near the worst? Did he find a target in the first quarter? Two firsts with one in the top 3, taking it now. Just not Freo’s mid rangers

I agree. It it will allow us to get more for him now. Get the indicator from Warner and if there’s a chance he’ll stay keep him but if it will be a circus next year you trade at the optimum point and that’s now

I don’t think anyone would genuinely want to move on Warner, but if he is going next year anyway it might be smart to move on him this year and maximise the return.

His best is amazing, nobody is contesting that.

But he isn’t a perfect player without flaws in his game (also not saying they can’t be worked on).

Yeah this is me. I'd prefer to keep him, though I'd move him to half forward/wing with midfield bursts.

That said, I'd be asking him to commit now beyond 2025 or we trade him this year.

If he's on the fence now, given where we're at vs the Eagles for example... then you don't risk the PSD threat next year (like Dawson) where we get offered a single first rounder or lose him for nothing.

and yet he still is one of the best players for us even with those bursts.
Which is why I'd prefer to play him to his strengths and reduce negative impact of his weaknesses. Until he can become more consistent.

In any case, we're discussing him because he may not want to stay beyond next year, in which case it doesn't matter how good he is, you move him on while you can get good value.

Pretty much this. One of the few that could get us access to the best KPD in the draft and heaven knows we need one.

I'm ok with letting Warner go if we think Trainor is an amazing A grade defender who wants to be a one club Sydney player and the deal lets us get him and one other good draftee

The draft is not the answer. We'll end up with Phillips or Stephens

Or a Dustin Martin or Bont.

Yes the draft isn't certain but this is the deepest draft in a decade, it is that good probably as good as 2001 actually but I'll leave that for others. Pick 20 players would be top 5 picks last year it's that deep.

Yeah or we take the contested beast mid (would be a few available up the top) then take your Shanahan/Whitlock etc at those mid teens/20's picks we have

With regards to drafting and trading, I'm interested to see the offseason some of our current players have and if they have the right desire to go to the next level.

I really hope Sheldrick recovers from his injuries, he has that ball winning grunt we need. Same with Cleary, they've both shown enough in flashes, and I would happily elevate them over Parker and Adams if they show that they can be the change we need. Giving Rowbottom an in and under ball winning specialist to partner with his tackling ferocity, a combo like that could free up Heeney, Gulden, Warner, etc to do the flashy things. We've moved away from a contested game, which is fine, but it seems like we've completely forgotten how to play a contested game, and it's hurting us when we don't have it all our own way.

I don't know if Konstanty never get his head around being an AFL footballer, or if he got blacklisted by the Swans because of the Mills incident, then obviously he got injured a bit, but if we extend him I hope he steps up. We need somebody like him, it's just a matter of if he is that player or if he's given up. Wicks can be a genuine pressure forward, with some real mongrel about him, but he isn't the same player with the same attitude he used to be.

Do Edwards and Snell have what it takes to take a step up next season?

I suspect a new head coach would force a reevaluation of all them, but that's for another thread.
They all play in positions of need for us, the opportunity is there for all of them. But in the interim I think we have to look at players like Frost, or even Owies, if the staff don't think those current players are good enough.
