How injured is Lalor? Will we see him at all next year?
he's gonna be up n running for preseason but he's starting in the rehab group partly because injury, but also because he's lacked footy preseasons being a gun cricketer

so there's every chance he's ready by rd1, but his aerobic base won't be close to max so he might start more fwd with short stints in the mid at first

I hope we take it cautious with him, which it sounds like we are, because the dude had a horrid run of injuries at the end of last year and during this year which probably ended up resulting in him doing his hammy cos he was that underdone

Not the same. First of all this is a much stronger and deeper draft and we have much better picks in it. It was 5 within 30, but was also only 2 picks within 27 while this one we have 6 within 23. HUGE difference.

9, 17, 28, 29, 30.
1, 7, 12, 14, 21, 23.

  • 2 picks before our first pick in 2021.
  • 4 picks better than our 2nd best.
  • All 6 picks better than our 3rd best.

Even if we did have the same picks, the strength and depth would've = much better talent avaliable for those last 3 picks.

Then if you look at that 2021 draft it's too early to judge anyway. Pick #9 was Gibcus who before injuries looked a gun, Tom Brown our #17 who is starting to look good but this was his first year of actually playing after some injury troubles himself. Then the last 3 are all late 20s in a draft that wasn't particularly strong, so at that point it's really a coin flip if you hit or not.

Overall those guys have played 20, 19, 24, 21, and 17 games each. Really good players you can tell from the start that they will be a gun, but others really have to hit around the 50 games mark before you start really seeing something. So we're still too early to judge this draft anyways.
don't forget it was a covid affected draft, kids didn't get to develop as normal and we wouldn't have gotten to see as much footage as normal drafts

I remember in last year's draft twomey was mentioning that 2023 is probably the last "covid affected" one, so 2024 was the perfect year to stock up picks

Blair is a genius and needs to be made a Director and kept at this club forever. What he did over this offseason was extraordinary.

Lalor - Top pick rated all year
Smilie - top pick for half a year
Hotton - top 5 pick before injury
Trainor - top 5 pick before rumours of injury
Armstrong - top 10 pick rated at back end
Faull - we loved him all year. Was always gonna be the KF we didn’t want to leave. Competitive beast.

The mix and balance and just everything about the night was perfect.

Here’s to you Mr Hartley!

He killed it during the trade period. The media kept trying to talk down our players and asking prices.

Then we made it count by not wasting picks going up the order and extracting value out of north.

Now we just need to develop and coach this guys in a way that makes them reach their potential. And hopefully they don't get injured
Yep. I was thinking even if every one of these picks turn out to be duds I wouldn't have a bad word to say about BH or anyone behind the draft strategy. We got four of the guys I would've taken had we had the first four picks (Lalor, Smillie, Trainor, Armstrong). And I'm happy with Hotton as a bit of a risk and Faull.

But your point is spot on. We've seemed to struggle the last few years in player development (IMO) and I really hope that was down to a dearth of quality picks and not our coaching and development. Good coaching, patience and faith. Let's go!

Considering the top remaining talents look to be tall forward and we probably don't want to pick another, it doesn't make too much sense to keep our pick as other teams will value it much higher than we do,

Getting another F1 next year is probably the ideal scenario? But if not I think moving down some spots for a F2 or F3 might be the best way to go. Just like last year we may be able to bank some lower value F2 or F3 a few times with small drops down the order and still end up with the same player we would got anyway.

Bombers seem like a likely target given there is a large gap until 37 and the guy they want will be gone by then. A team in the position where they may back themselves to make finals but also could collapse down the ladder means there could be a disconnect where we value their pick v they do.
They have 37, 39 and 43 too. Even if they don't want to give up a F1, maybe a F2 + 37 could work nicely.
If it is Essendon that comes in for it I'd take their future 1st rounder in a heartbeat. :D

This haul's gonna look even better in a few years when Norf folds and we get FOS.

LOL Norf. I wonder if our mates are still lurking. If so, here's a little treat to make you feel better:

Yeah I can’t see them either in the app, I had to search them to see if they were in a sub thread but it says they should be on the main Richmond board.

It’s confusing.
pinned threads are shite anyways, people just scroll past that section and don't even notice them

Love your analysis and I agree there's cause for optimism and that 2021 is very different from 2024 in terms of detail. My point is more about tempering expectations and just understanding there is an element of luck. An obvious point but I think if expectations are too high (especially internally at the club, but also externally) it can actually build too much pressure and stunt growth. I love the personalities that were on show last night and definitely there's leadership potential there, which is exactly what we are in desperate need of. Make no mistake this will be a long and difficult journey back to being a contender.
The class of 21 can all play, some showed it in year 1 ~2022. Gibcus & Sonsie played a final. Others took time. Brown grew bit & Banks had to muscle up a bit.

The class of 24 is coming into a team that just spooned, and has lost a squillion games experience. Zero expectations on the list really.

Sacking Meehan was crucial and I expect our injury management to be far better. Who knows Lynch stays on the park is the biggie. We haven't had a proper functioning fwd line for 2 seasons.
A second year from Gibcus be nice too.
Hopper stays uninjured and shows the form before we drafted him, be unprecedented.

Smilie looks like a round 1 debutant and if he hits the wall debut Lalor next.

Faull or Trainor might debut slot straight into the the KPF vacancy. Hotton might slot into the half fwd vacancies. Late 2024, our mids getting a lot of the ball & inside 50s....just no one to kick it to.

That late pick swap with the Norfies was bloody delicious. Instant change of underwear after seeing that one come through - I never thought both shitting yourself and orgasming at once was possible…. Turns out you absolutely can under the right conditions

Nice to see some big strong healthy lads added to our list too. Geez at his size that Smillie could be an absolute destroyer.

Love to see a small angry-pills forward added to the list tonight. Watching that Jake king vid the other day is getting me all frothy to have some more mongrel in the side.

After 2024 draft we gonna have more options than diddy’s dildo collection. Looking forward to seeing them develop over the next few years 😍
