Wouldn't anyone they draft be automatically added to the depth?
No.

My definition of a depth player, is one who can contribute to the senior team if called up, due to injury to a best 22 player.

Mathieson and Lester are perfect examples of a depth player.

You could potentially still find a few such players running out in the State leagues.

Not all draftees are able to contribute at such a level in their first year, or years.

And, perhaps even more to the point, trying to get them before anyone else does.
this is 100% the reason people still speculate on 18 year olds - but when there are 21 year olds available where no speculation is really even required, not enough of them get taken.

Some 18 year olds may have limited upside, while there are probably a few 20-21 year olds still with incredible upside.

Define 'incredible'.

Confirmation of the speculation that if you knew who you were going to take with pick 1, talk to him and see what his thoughts on going #1 is:

A week before the draft, the Giants had informed Cadman they were going to draft him, but also canvassed his thoughts on being the No.1 pick outright or whether they should instead bid on Brisbane father-son Will Ashcroft. Cadman's take was that if you're going to be No.2, you may as well be the No.1, with the impressive key forward wearing his Giants jumper and broad grin everywhere he went on draft night.

And a titbit on other clubs rating Fletcher:

The Bulldogs had fielded the same interest from Melbourne as Carlton did and had looked at ways to push up the board. They pulled the trigger on a bid on Brisbane father-son Jaspa Fletcher, with the bid coming where the Lions had him ranked as well. Carlton and Collingwood also rated Fletcher highly.

Question for the draft watchers - did Mac Andrew from Gold Coast Suns ever play in a GWS style top (giant orange G) prior to his drafting?

The ABC did a small report yesterday on Mac Andrew being in trouble with the coppers for drink driving on his Ps. They had some filler shots of a black man in a GWS style G guernsey running around and posing for photos. I suspect they have used stock footage of Leek Aliir by accident but I dont want to be accused of "Rueben Williams blackfacing" in case Mac Andrew did come from a junior club that had GWS style branding.

Wrong thread?

Played for Dandenong Stingrays in the NAB League. I guess their guernsey could be mistaken for a GWS guernsey if seen for a split second on an angle.

Was a member of Melbourne’s nga academy, no ties to GWS I’m aware of.

Levi named in the Vic metro hub as a bottom ager.

Also, Levi is reported to be training up here with the squad this preseason. I hope a few of the academy boys get to train with the squad as well.
only the overagers who didn't get drafted have been training with the main squad from what I can see.

Josh Cooper, Jack Manly to name a couple that I spotted at a session

Is it to early to start the:

2024 Draft Thread aka: Father Son watch mark II.

Smart, basically get 2 pre-seasons with an AFL team before he starts his debut season. Pretty sure we did the same thing with W.Ashcroft, he got around 2 or so AFL pre-seasons before he will debut. Really sets them up with the running/physical side of things.

May be hold him back a little, we don't want another all-season No.1 pick father son wailing from down south.

I wouldn’t worry about that.

Two years out, and the 2024 draft might be the most compromised ever in terms of father sons and northern academy kids.

Hopefully the AFL doesn’t change the F/S & NA rules before then

He is only up for 1 week. That's just a fraction of what a pre-season consists of. The main purpose of Levi being invited is to make him feel welcome, give him a sense of this is where he is wanted and hopefully where he wants to be come his time to be drafted....more PR than anything.

It might be only one week this year?
But he was definitely at the last session last year as well, doing a lot of work with Grant Birchall on the side lines.
Wasn’t part of the main session though.
