not in the next few years but longer term whos the small forward options post charlie/linc? we're talking looking up to 5 years away.
Cameron is 29 this year, and McCarthy is 30.

I’m not exactly confident either has 5 years left in their legs.

I would expect Levi Ashcroft to more than likely begin his career as a forward.

We have a few small forwards coming through the academy, however possibly the most talented isn’t until the 2025 draft.

I reckon Charlie has still got another 4-5 years of quality football still him (similar to Betts pre-2018) but starting to have concern’s on McCarthy long term spot after 2023/2024, especially if the club decided to place him in the 2s a couple of times this preseason.

Lets say it’s the beginning of the 2025 season then, realistically for our small forward setup - I would have Charlie and Rayner/Lohmann playing close to goal with our full-forward (whoever it may be) and then possibly putting Bailey and Levi (Ashcroft) on our half forward lines alongside our centre half-forward before putting that spare tall forward on the bench.

Then once this “mysterious” young talent comes to our club post 2025 (still don’t know anything about him) he would take Cameron’s spot in a year or so, depending on Cameron’s form and etc.

However, anything can change in the AFL world but that would be my ideal setup to keep our premiership window open, in terms of small scoring power in our F50.

I do have some concern about Cameron, particularly his left ankle (I think it is).

As for academy small forwards, we’ve got;
Maverick Garaicoa from Wilston Grange this draft, Jake Fazldeen from Morningside next year, and Raphael Geesu from Victoria Point in 2025.

At this stage, I’d say Garaicoa and Fazldeen are outside chances. Geesu I hope to see in this year’s U16 championships.

Of course we could make a play for Jarrod Cameron during next year’s SSP.

I have seen Geesu play live a couple of times, extremely talented but from my viewing a little hot headed which albeit could be a good thing(morph into high level competitiveness) in the long run once he matures. Also both games I saw he played as a balanced mid... that could be just the level of footy though as it was Division 1 club footy and not Rep stuff.

Lions academy versus the Suns academy at noon Sunday, out at Springfield if anyone needs a footy fix this weekend. Expect the Suns to thump us again.

Nathan Philactides and Luamon Lual my early favourites in this draft.
I don’t know if I have a favourite.

If I was going to hitch my wagon to anyone to push Reid for the top spot, it would be Ashton Moir.

The two players I am keen to follow are Nate Caddy and George Stevens.

Really hoping both grow to genuine KPP size, and maybe we can move up the draft order and snag one.

No specific players, just KPD, or two.
Yep I think it's time to add some. Looks likely we can grab 2-3 over the next couple of drafts from our academy. The big question is do we try to trade back into this year's first round to grab a highly rated KPF? Is it the right time? I wonder what names might be available around the 12-18 mark.

The Lions Level 2 program are playing games immediately prior to that game if you want a glimpse of the future.

Genuinely hope someone gets out there and provides some insight in to the kids.

A secondary consideration in light of recent discussions, would be how our academy coaches perform.

I know from reading the Gold Coast board, their academy has been training once or twice a week for most of this preseason.

much to the chagrin of club coaches, L3 academy been training minimum twice a week since pre xmas and often push past 8pm on weeknights after starting at 530pm

I believe L2 have been training 3 times a week as well since around early Feb or late Jan, but many kids only doing 2 sessions due to school footy committments or other sporting things (cricket), which is great that there is a school competition that is competitive, legitmate and worth taking part in. Massive leap for footy in Brisbane having the AIC competition really thriving and of a high standard.

Edit: I was keen to go and watch, but there are multiple triple header QAFL practice games I think will be more interesting, so will go to one of them instead.

Wondering if anyone has anything to add to the quite explosive comments made to the Roar Deal about the academy earlier this week?
Pretty much the same has been mentioned many times on the BigFooty QLD Forum in the QAFL threads.

I believe the sticking point would be to get people to make such comments on record, and probably burn any relationship they have/had from the academy.

Probably only stuff that has been heard before but still is a bit of a concern.
An obviously something needs to be addressed by the club.

Wasn't a shock given past comments on this thread, but I'm glad someone is looking in to it. Definitely not something that would happen if they were still a club sanctioned podcast.
