Article about Lions and Gold Coast Academy prospects for the next few years

2023
Patrick Snell (Key Defender)
The Northern Territory product earned an invite to the Victorian Draft Combine in early October and could be in the Lions’ sights later in the upcoming draft.
Averaged just under 14 disposals and four intercept possessions in the Coates Talent League and was a reliable key tall in defence for the U18 Allies.

2024
Sam Marshall (Midfielder)
A hard-running 185cm midfielder who boards in Melbourne and doubles his time with the Sandringham Dragons, Marshall averaged 24 disposals and 3.4 clearances per game in the Coates Talent League.
Impressed with 19 touches in his sole Brisbane VFL appearance in Round 16 and was one of the best on display in the U17 futures curtain raiser to the AFL grand final last month. Could come into first round consideration next year.

Tom Gillett (Ruck-Forward)
Standing 201cm, Gillett is capable of playing in all three areas of the ground. Has rucked for Queensland and the Lions Academy while also spending time forward. Covers the ground well and is effective with the ball in-hand, averaging 14 disposals in the Coates Talent League this year.

2025
Daniel Annable (Midfielder)
Skippered the Lions Academy to the Pool B Championship and earned MVP honours in the process. A gritty midfielder capable of winning his own footy – and plenty of it – he averaged 30.3 disposals, 5.3 clearances and 6.7 tackles.
Annable is a true contested bull who wins his own footy and sets up scoring forays. Will be one of the top Queensland prospects in the 2025 draft class if he continues on his current trajectory.

Harrison Bridge (Defender)
A classy left-footer who averaged 21 disposals for the Lions Academy at the U16 National Championships, Bridge was one of two Brisbane boys named in the All-Australian side.
Went at 71 per cent by hand and foot over the Lions’ three games and was one of the most damaging outside runners at the championships.
Got a taste of senior footy this year in the QAFL and looks an exciting prospect with major upside.

Daniel Annable seems like a good one from the brief description, an underager to captain the team and average 30 disposals, anyone seen him play?

What about Hodge's son, is he in the 2025 draft?

Cooper Hodge is 2026.

Annable coming through for inside mid role would be timely to swap for Neale/Lyons/Dunkley combo. Similarly Harrison Bridge looks like a pretty good prospect to cover half back flank, left footer, good kick etc.

Last one on the list - smokey - is Charlie Hewitt. KPF, can play at either end.

Annable was captain of the Lions academy U16 team in the Div 2 Championships. He wasn’t underage.

Cooper Hodge is 2026 draft.

I have Raphael Geesu right up there with Annable and Bridge as an academy prospect in 2025. Small forward with a game similar to Kysiah Pickett.

I also really liked Oscar Barry’s performances at the U16 championships. Played as a medium defender, who offered good rebound and run up the wing.

Pretty sure Charlie Hewitt is 2024 draft. Played as an over ager at U16 championships.

On the 2024 draft board someone asked if Levi is now the favourite for the #1 pick. What are the chances the team with pick 1 (probably Eagles) bid that early knowing we will 100% match?

I generally think no team would ever select a guy at pick 1 they know will get matched.

It stiffs the guy they end up taking at 2 of that NAB money, detracts from the otherwise good PR for the club and is a bit of a downer to start the relationship, ie you were our second choice so much so we selected a guy we knew would be bid on.

Crows did it in 2020 bidding on JUH before selecting Thilthorpe with pick 2.

In this case the crows put more value on sending a we-love-you message to JUH who they expected to 'come home' than on giving Tillthorpe the virtual hug.

I doubt West Coast would consider bidding on Levi to be the first step in a future courtship since he has no inherent links to the place and if he wanted to move from Brisbane would almost certainly be able to take his pick of eager Melbourne suitors...

As a general rule I don’t think a team will pick based on talent in these circumstances unless there is a reason to do so, such as the one VR pointed out.

At this stage, I don’t believe Ashcroft will be bid on in the top 2. Somewhere in the 3 to 6 range most likely.

There’s been a fair bit of discussion since last year, that Levi was an early developer physically, and he’s been the same for the last two years.

He’s adding to his game, and can still add muscle/size, but he’s not growing any taller.

Will nominated us because him ad Levi knew that was the only way they would play together. Good luck to anyone bidding on him, whatever the position.

I always go looking for combine results from time to time, so here's the link. hope others find it useful.

Dont know anything about Zane Zakostelsky, but combine results look pretty strong for a 196cm tall.

WA undersized athletic ruck who looks to transition into a key defender. West Coast supporters are high on him at their second round pick.

Wonder if he's any good in the forward line.

Naughton was pencilled in as key defender during draft and he's been anything but defending these days.

A second van Rooyen could enter the AFL by this time next month.

At least that’s the hope of Sam, brother of Melbourne forward Jacob, who isn’t assured of being taken on draft night.

But an impressive draft combine and some late season form for Claremont Colts as they claimed the premiership has held him in good stead.

Van Rooyen says he’s spoken to Melbourne, Brisbane, Sydney, GWS, St Kilda, Carlton and more, with his chances of joining his brother in a different time zone growing.

So if par (the average expected?) is say 75 ... he would be hitting 79 to 80? What do you need to make a living from it (ie what do the pros shoot typically).
Pros have a handicap of zero.
