Most teams juggle around 4/5 rucks/ruck forwards at any given time. It's an important position.
I think we have 4 at the moment, so seems on point.
Four's about right - senior ruck (Oscar), backup (Fort), senior listed rookie (Smith) and rookie (Lane) - and usually one of the rookies will be doing double duty (Smith). So we're right on point now. We'd only be looking to bring in another if we delisted one of the above.

I just don’t rate Lane or Smith as ruckman from what I’ve seen. Smith is worth preserving with though and he could be that direct replacement for Big O in terms of trying to nullify hit outs and taking a good contested mark here and there. That’s his ceiling for mine. He’s not mobile enough to be able to play predominantly as a forward in this era. I feel like Edwards and Reid have good wheels for 200 plus players and that provides a lot of flexibility in terms of their ability to ruck and pinch hit forward. Edwards leap also sets him apart from our current ruck stocks.

Lane is more one dimensional in that he can’t play forward and I don’t think his ruck craft is good enough to hold down a number one ruck spot in future.

Whilst Fort and Big O have a fair bit left to give a ruck generally takes 3-4 years to be AFL ready, by which point fort and O would be near the end/ well past their prime. So the time is now for mine before it becomes a Sydney type of problem where they are forever looking for a quick solution to their ruck stocks.

NOVEMBER 9 - DUAL ALL-AUSTRALIAN DELISTED AMID MORE LIST GAMBLES

Hawthorn will be hoping a rival club doesn’t swoop on dual All-Australian forward Chad Wingard after he and 2022 trade recruit Cooper Stephens were delisted on Thursday.

The Hawks made the moves while committing to re-draft the pair, though because they have officially been delisted, they could receive a better contract offer from a rival club and walk.

Has something suggested we would?

The guy is on the wrong side of 30 and has done an ACL.
Don't expect him to go anywhere but back to Hawthorn.

He also has a really dumb haircut.

Gothard looked impressive to me. Definite small forward replacement. Little bit of Toby Green about him. He’s my choice of this group.

Not convinced about Dawson. Serviceable and got reasonable ground and contested skills for a big bloke, but still a bit raw. He also has a strange kicking action and needs to hold his marks. May take 3 or 4 more years of skills training.

Freijah moves well, moves well and from all the media build up, I was expecting an Isaac Smith clone. Needs to contest harder, and is a bit predictable with his ball use.

McAuliffe is a beast, but a bit loose with his aggressive competitiveness. Good left foot, but not always on target. Reminded me a bit of Beastmode.

McAuliffe has spoken to all but 4 clubs, including us

I thought the opposite; didn’t look a type at all and had that soft vibe about him. Doubt he does anything at Melbourne.
Agree - never knew why others frothed over him. Not athletic, no skills, and soft. Only thing the kid has going for him is that he's tall. Anyone who is 200cm seem to get many free passes (even the lazy spuds) whereas someone who is 1`80cm and busts his gut for 5 or 6 years in the VFL getting every bit of talent out of themselves are overlooked year on year.

Hope he goes well though but I wouldn't even put a tenner down that he lasts past this contract.

Never? :D
Fullarton has impressed me given his small frame and current skillset. Has clean hands almost Cox like when in close. Once he's added another 5-7kg to his body he will be a very good Stef Martin type clone IMO. Can see him developing quickly.

Full credit to McIvor for consistency though, I tried to pull the same trick on him but he has legitimately been negative on Fullarton the whole time.

SizeMatters just to make it clear, I'm actually in agreement with (most of) both your posts (I grant his athleticism) - I only had a go at the hyperbole. ;)

Initially his potential looked great, but at some point you have to let them go when they basically the same player as they were early on.

If we want a ruckman don't we need to trade up to pick 3 or 8 (historically speaking) ;)
Unless we have the absolute ideal player in mind, still think we get the best available player (regardless of position) with our first pick and then draft KPP stocks with our other two picks.

Wouldn’t be surprised if the club drafts another midfield / utility player with our Pick 30 (as it currently stands).

Are you for real; who hasn’t used a fake ID when they were 17 or had siblings, ransom strangers at the drive thru or mates siblings buy you grog when you were u/18 or u/21 in the US and coming across that there’s jail time attached to it. Give us a break; have you seen how much youth crime exists in this country with burglaries, bashings, ramming police cars etc etc and none of them see jail yet a kid buying his mates some grog is now getting jail time or worse yet a ten game ban. I’m sure those nobody decision makers must’ve felt big handing down such a penalty. Pathetic.

They didn't even check for id when I was 18. I'm soooo old 😭😭

You must have been outside Queensland in your younger days.
Queensland was last to reduce the drinking age from 21 to 18 in Feb 1974
A few weeks after the major Brisbane floods. Everyone needed a drink then, but supplies were short.

Some interesting dates on the image below taken from Wikipedia.

Theres a bunch of evidence that if you are 200cm+, somewhat athletic and willing to try you can pretty much have a multiyear professional sports career in Australia. There just arent enough people that height that AFL teams (and other sports) are very willing to give you multiple years on the off chance they come good.

I also have heard multiple times that basically the first things AFL pathway scouts look for at the junior levels is kids that are going to be tall. They care way more about height (or potential height) than ability at the younger ages

I was never asked for ID to enter a pub in the mid to late 1970s, was asked a few times when entering night clubs/discos.🕺
Yes, things were slack then in regard to fines to premises owners.
It was the Jo era and corruption rampant in the licensing and adult entertainment area.

I doubt staff got fined at all so they would just follow instructions from owner via management.
From memory in Brisbane, it was police that did drop ins on Hotels (certainly did in the city pubs i frequented) and it was they who fined the underage patrons. Bypassed me on numerous occasions and i had a youngish look.
As MSB ROYS mentioned they most likely looking for younger people playing up. Then maybe they got fined.

I never went to nightclubs, but don't recall being asked for ID at pubs.

The old 6-foot player is more the norm now. Thats 182.88 cm
We have 8 players under that height but 4 listed as 182cm being Ashcroft, Coleman, Bailey & Sharp
The other 4 are Cameron, McCarthy, Neale & Zorko.

The other GF team the Pies have 9 players under 183 cm.

Lions have 8 players (4 best 23) over 200 cm to the Pies 5 (4 best 23) players.
