The Saints president had a nice old whinge at the BnF last night about father sons, and how we’ve just won the premiership and we’re getting a top pick FoR fReE next year.

Don’t remember this amount of outrage aimed at Collingwood. Daicos boys, Moore, Brown brothers, Will Kelly, Tom McGuane this draft.

I hope the Riewoldt boys choose the Devils over the Saints tbh 👌🏻

Who on earth does Levi come in for?
Right now - nobody from the premiership side on the weekend. However a new preseason - those that perform will get rewarded with a game in the opening round. You'd expect the competition in the up coming preseason will be sky high. You do though get a sneaking suspicion he will be there.

That says to me the Saints are a long way off being a premiership side or even a contender.

Your turn now to be the example of the "extremely unfair" advantages of the academy and F/S system.

Victorians can't stand a non-Victorian club wins a flag once in a blue moon.

We've totally skated by on it for a while with basically all our academy players being later picks. Earliest is technically Fletcher at pick 12, but he could have been F/S.

Annable next year is going to make people real, real mad.

Kane was going around in circles saying it's F/S and Academy picks to Brisbane meant St Kilda have no hope in winning a flag, then he said we turned our club around because we got Fagan? St Kilda could have gotten Fagan....but they didn't. He then said GWS should have beaten us if Daniels had not of played on....so therefore it wasn't because of our F/S and Academy players but GWS took a wrong option - Strange. No mention of playing the GF at the MCG. If we had to play St Kilda in the GF it would be a massive advantage to St Kilda.

Did he tee off on the NGA? Looks like they will get priority access to another handy one or two this year I see so no doubt he has some great ideas on making that "fair" as well.

But great work from the Saints anyway for ensuring Lennox Hofmann had a pathway to AFL in Victoria. Living in Switzerland for 6 months of his life was detrimental to his chances of finding his way through the poor AFL talent pathway in Victoria. An incredible story.

After teeing off against northern academies, the next two discussions were about players wanting to “go home” to W.A. 🤯

This whinge fest is going to be hard to listen to. Especially since we all know that eventually the AFL will nobble the northern feeder clubs. 🤮

Fletcher was drafted as a father son selection.

St Kilda probably have the second strongest NGA zone after Essendon.

Going forward, we’re not going to be able to get everyone one of our academy kids.

Probably by as early as 2026, we’re probably going to have to start prioritising list needs over drafting best available academy kid each year.

We’re lucky that this is a particularly strong and deep draft, as in terms of pure quality, Marshall is up there with Fletcher, just a different type of player, but probably gets bid on 10 picks later, because of the depth of mids in this draft.

We may have won 2023 as well if he was on the ground.

2025 looks pretty exciting with 2 x Ashcrofts and a Neale going through the middle.
Our ball movement changed a lot when he was injured, I have no doubt in my mind we win last year if he was playing. BUT I am pretty sure the Pies didn't have their best team out their either.

The Saints would manage to bungle their F/S picks anyway. How many top picks have they taken that turned out to be average?

Money Talks: When will the bid come for Lions’ father-son Levi Ashcroft?

Brisbane Lions father-son prospect Levi Ashcroft could become the second player to attract a bid at pick one of the national draft in November as clubs start to drill down on ranking the 2024 national draft pool.
St Kilda president Andrew Bassat’s outburst about the AFL’s draft system at the Saints’ best and fairest put the spotlight on the fact the premiers will pick up the highly rated junior who is the brother of Norm Smith Medal winner Will and son of triple premiership Lion, Marcus Ashcroft.
Three club list managers who wished to remain anonymous to speak freely about draft matters considered the 18-year-old a top three selection in an open pool with the decision on when the bid comes down to an individual club’s willingness to make that call.
Some clubs with the No.1 selection in the draft have shown a preference to not use the first pick to make a bid as they want to ensure the player selected ends up in their jumper.
Adelaide are the only club to use the No.1 pick on a father-son or academy prospect with the Crows choosing Western Bulldogs forward Jamarra Ugle-Hagan at pick one before settling on exciting local forward Riley Thilthorpe with pick two after the bid was matched.
None of the clubs involved at the pointy end of the draft have given an indication whether they would be prepared to bid on Levi Ashcroft who had an outstanding season with the Sandringham Dragons, which won the Coates Talent League premiership. In his VFL match with the Lions he had 35 disposals against the Giants. Richmond hold the first selection with North Melbourne the second and West Coast the third pick.
The Kangaroos lodged a bid for Gold Coast’s Jed Walter at pick two last season and on Will Ashcroft at pick two in the 2022 national draft. The Giants lodged a bid for Western Bulldogs’ father-son Sam Darcy at pick two in 2021 while the Suns lodged a bid for Collingwood’s Nick Daicos at pick four in the same season, showing that clubs are no longer hesitant to use high picks to make bids.
Despite the AFL delaying the introduction of a new bidding system which will force clubs to pay a higher price for father-son and academy graduates until 2025, the Lions still face a difficult battle to gather enough points for both Ashcroft and academy graduate Sam Marshall, under the system that has been in place since 2015.
The Lions have picks 18, 56, 69 and 92 in their hand and will likely look to maximise the value of pick 18 to accumulate enough points to match the bid.
Half the clubs in the competition are putting their most serious bids to the Gold Coast to get pick 12 as the Suns need points for academy graduate Leo Lombard, but they may turn their attention to pick 18 once that question is resolved.
The Lions will also need to keep in mind that academy prospect Daniel Annable is also due to graduate ahead of the 2025 national draft with clubs pondering whether they may have to trade out a required player at some point to achieve that goal.

Billings over Bontempelli
McCartin over Petracca
Coffield over Naughton
Max King over Ben King

It’s been mentioned a lot that a lot of those picks were understandable at the time but of course in hindsight are bad. If they wore it on the chin I’d be willing to go with it but to pretend that part of good drafting is to actually not go with the safe pick and to do your homework and develop your players.

We got graded a B by Fox but a D by ESPN for our 2021 draft haul of Wilmot, Lohmann and Tunstill. Doerre on ESPN said ‘the Lions get marked down due to all three of their picks being relative reaches’. Fox said it was a surprised we took Lohmann at the end of the first round but said he was a potential game changer.

Where was the St kilda president when we were getting reamed by the start up clubs draft hands?

It's always unfair when someone is getting a boost but the silence was deafening back then.

Really peeves me.

Not to mention where was the righteousness when they were giving us pick 25 for Longer who was a pick 8 just two years prior.
