For 2025, the main changes will be:

  • The revised draft value index and bidding system will be introduced. The new DVI will make it harder for clubs to stockpile draft selections to match multiple bids on Academy and father-son selections.
  • As part of this, the 20 per cent points discount applied to matched bids will be reduced to 10 per cent. However, the AFL will continue to review this and assess whether it should apply to all or some of father-son, NGA and northern Academy players.
  • The new DVI will see points attached to only the first 54 picks (down from the current system of the first 73 picks). There will be more than 10,000 points shaved off the value of the next DVI.
  • Future trading of picks will be extended to two years in advance.

Melbourne Mafia at it again…remember when they changed the zone boundary literally just to prevent Nick Riewoldt coming to Brisbane…oh well, horse has largely bolted as Washcroft and Lashcroft are in 🤷‍♂️

Sam Marshall was deservedly named best on ground in a grand final that his Dragons dominated from the opening bounce. Marshall was dominant early as the Dragons kicked away to an enormous lead, kicking goals and breaking lines to setup his teammates, and he kept up his relentless pace the rest of the way to ensure his team kept their foot on the throat of their opponents. Marshall has quietly put together a stellar campaign, improving his game over the course of the last two years to stamp himself as one of the most capable and versatile outside mid prospects in the pool. The flaws in his game are hard to find... his running power allows him to break lines and he combines that with the agility to dance around opponents and slip tackles, his decision making is excellent and disposal solid. He's even capable of going inside and winning his own footy when required.

Exactly the kind of talent you'd love to bring in. Suits the modern game with his running ability, but so clean.

It’s such a pity about that serious heart issue that will stop him from ever playing more than one season. They’re trying to keep it quiet but those in the know… <shakes he’d ruefully>
I think he’ll probably slip to the rookie draft because of that.

You broke confidentiality man, that's not cool.

We have a few on starting this year
2024 - Levi, Marshall, Gallop, Gilder, Gillett
2025 - Annable, Harrison Bridge, Geesu, Ben Lilico
2026 - Addison Stolz

Stolz is 2027 and the e;ite prospects for that age group are Rafter, Boothey and Stolz. There is a kid called Ellen as well, who has made all the right rep teams etc, but I don't see anything in his game that warrants it.

Early call, but 2028 draft there is a lad called Hutchings. This kid is a star, absolutely elite.

Searching back, it was Caelan Murray who Miller1971 was talking about, but it was the player he was comparing him to who he was saying was super impressive (Dylan Patterson - GC Academy). My mistake

Murray is a smooth operator, beautiful skills, a running machine. I really rate him over any other 2026 prospects, even Owen.

Caylen Murray the pick for 2026 at this early stage. Is Matthew Owen 2026? Murray & Owen were the only Lions academy players who made the U16 AA team this year. Owen is another classy, accumulating mid FYI.

Owen has the rare talent to be able to just find the footy regularly and accumulate. He doesn't have any physical weapons, he runs well, is neat by hand and foot and is particularly good at releasing players into space with a well placed handball from the inside of stoppage. He is all class, but lacks the speed and power of others.

The other top 2026 prospects would be Hodge, Thomson, Levi. Thought the latter 2 seem to have almost disappeared, so not sure what is doing there? Thommo 42 - where is your lad?

Sorry, not around as often atm. Looks like the discussion sorted out who.

I do have a comment on Annable though. I do have genuine questions over his kicking, both penetration and accuracy. I have seen him kick a lot of scrubbers, even when under little pressure. For me, will he end up up another Ben Keays or Dev Robertson level mid, where his poor kicking limits his midfield potential and time? or does he improve his kicking and look to be a much better running version of Jarryd Lyons?

I have always had concerns with Annable kicking, but it has improved out of site and is now adequate to above average. He is also an excellent shot on goal under pressure (despite one in the QAFL GF he would love to have again).

However, he accumulates the footy incredibly well, wins really hard ball in tigh situations ans has the ability to win basically 100% of the 50/50 contests he is involved in, and I'd argue he wins the lions share of contests he has no right to win at all - just an absolute contested beast around the footy. If he isn't bid on inside the Top 15, I'd be shocked. If he was eligible this year, he would be a 2nd rounder at worst.

Also mea culpa. I have never rated Marshall, felt he was just an athlete that burns the footy. However, he has had a ripper year and I was 100% wrong on him. Kid can play

I do wonder, would he have developed as well as he has if he was a true academy player? I doubt it.

Being in the CTL full-time and playing APS footy has rounded him nicely in a way the Academy would not have been able to.

Wow our Academy looks really strong in coming years
That's the power of keeping a premiership window open for an extended period. We saw it 20 years ago when the triple premiership Lions inspired a boom that resulted in crazy amount of Queensland talent coming through in the 2006-10 period like Tippettx2, Beamsx2, Zorko, Harbrow, Dempsey, White, Armitage, Hampson, Petterd, Renouf etc. These Brisbane juniors coming through over the next few years have grown up dreaming of playing for the Lions and won't really remember a time when the Lions weren't good, just like those in the 2006-10 period that wouldn't really remember the pre-triple premiership era struggles for Brisbane. The Swans have been the masters of this over the last three decades by remaining highly competitive almost every season since 1996 (only missed 5 finals series since then) and you see the multiple generational support they receive.

Just in time for the stinking draft matching rule change.

After all the bleating & moaning from a couple of the Vic clubs this year, I'd chuckle heartily if the Saints down the track have two generational talent father sons come through the same year & couldn't match due to these changes.

Levi appeared on the Rush Hour podcast with JB and Billy yesterday (from 46:29 onwards).

It's good to listen to his perspective on training with the Lions, Fages, the Lions midfield, his playing style, and his Brother, family, and former Lions players (who are now Coaches) influence on him. Goes for 11 mins.
thanks just listened, was great to hear how he often plays golf with the Scott brothers, and the family keep in touch with all Marcus's former team mates.

Points are going to be interesting this year - can't have as much of a deficit as previous years:

NEW DVI DEFICIT FOR CLUBS

A NEW points deficit limit for matching bids on father-son and Academy players will see Brisbane forced to get creative with its draft hand this year.

This year will be the last season of the current Draft Value Index, with updated points per pick to be brought in for 2025. Next year's DVI, however, has seen the AFL shave off nearly 10,000 points so clubs find it harder to match multiple Academy or father-son bids and reduced points attached to mid-draft picks.

Under the outgoing bidding system, clubs have had a points deficit limit at 1723 points, meaning they could only go that far into deficit to match bids. Any further and they would not be allowed to match a bid on a draftee.

TRADE HUB All the latest player movement news

The number was the equivalent of the total points attached to the group of picks assigned to the premiership team each year: No.18, 36, 54 and 72.

But with clubs heading into next year's model, they will have their new points deficit reduced to 1167 points, equal to pick 18 (836 points), 36 (317), 54 (14) and 72 (0) in the new model.

Essentially, the Lions, who have bids to match on father-son gun Levi Ashcroft and Academy midfielder Sam Marshall, will not be able to go into as far a deficit if early bids come. The only club to have a deficit on their first-round pick in the past was Fremantle in 2020, which went into a slight deficit to match a bid on NGA player Liam Henry.

A bid for Ashcroft is expected in the first five selections and top 20 for Marshall, who was last week named best afield in the Coates Talent League Grand Final for Sandringham.

Clubs are pushing to trade for Brisbane's first-round pick – which will be No.17 or 18 after the Grand Final – given the Lions will look to turn the prized selection into more picks and points. – Callum Twomey

I'd be very iffy on matching a first round bid for Marshall if it leaves us with a deficit.

I wouldn’t be too concerned at all with acquiring enough points for Ashcroft and Marshall. Previous years its been a pretty easy task for list managers to achieve, especially regarding downgrading picks.

There seems to be a bit of talent on the move already, we will be able to leverage our first rounder on a few potential deals to pocket handy points.
Also, with the uncertainty of the future matching, there might be more of a premium on future pick, where we will get good return for our F2 if needed.

I'd be fine. You'd figure we'd be thereabouts again, probably matching someone (Annabelle) again, so ultimately just keep rolling it over.
