That's a reasonable thesis but I think you underestimate Adams' skills. He's getting better every game now that he has full fitness. He seems to play Hawkins allright and he's 198 but I'd agree anyone taller is probably an issue.

Harris just doesn't seem to play the really tall guys all that well over the last couple of years . Seems late to the contest or trying to get a leap into it but not quite getting there in time.

It's a good problem to have the 3 backmen we have of the quality they are. I'd love to play Payne for a few games to see what he's got but it's a tough decision isn't it.
I agree on Adams. His skills are superior to Payne in my view. Adams could turn into one of our better trades. Payne has development in him, but so does Adams given his injury history.

One of the gradual and pleasing developments in Dizzy's game is that he is now taking intercept marks and not defaulting to the spoil at every opportunity.

If I wanted any of our backmen to defend for my life, I'd pick Darcy Gardiner.

Not just you and it's interesting that you feel your viewpoints are unique to others. Most of the time it's confirmation bias. I'd also suggest that draft watchers like yourself have a bias towards playing younger players. The lure of potential and all that. I'll admit Darcy used to give away too many frees, but that has improved the last few years. Concedes 1 free kick per game, down from 1.5 in 2018. That's not too bad for a defender. Andrews and Adams average about the same. Payne isn't half the player currently that these three are.
It was very much tongue in cheek.

I know I’ve been vocal about Darcy for a couple of years. I know I’m not the only poster here who’s said as much, but I wasn’t about to tag the other poster I am most familiar who has a similar view, because he hasn’t commented himself yet, in the current discussion.

I don’t prefer younger players/draftees. I’d really like Darcy Moore, but that’s not going to happen.

I know Payne is not there yet, and he’s going to struggle to get there if he doesn’t get regular AFL football, but for team balance and defensive structure, I believe he would be a better option.

I don't think the height of a defender is as important as some people think. Dane Rampe has played as a key defender for years and he is 189cm. Steven May is 193cm and was AA last year as a key defender. Tom Jonas is 188cm. Nick Haynes is 192cm.

Individually no, but I think its important as a mix. Port have a short defence and get absolutely exposed by some teams. Even May without support the other week had a bag kicked against him. Without Lever these to help intercept he got caught out.

As more and more 200cm+ forwards come in (King, King, McKay, etc) we need to make sure we can cover them. But yes not every defender needs to be 200cm+ either

It certainly isn't a bad idea to have a rotational policy within reason of course. It is important to get games into the next gen for two reasons. 1. Make sure they keep developing. 2. In case of injury, you have more ready to go, match fit replacements.

Positioning to reduce a forwards run at the ball, blocking to help an intercept mark, calm under pressure. Lot of these things go unnoticed but the defensive unit rely upon greatly. The back unit seem to work better with Darcy in it. When he was out injured we as defensive unit didn't appear to work as well. If Payne played enough there perhaps the same effect could result.

hmmm
how about Bobby Hill and Toby Greene for Charlie Cameron and Blake Coleman?

People really overrate Payne. I don't see it - dizzy has some faults, but when he has had a clean injury run has been pretty good as the third banana. Plus, continuity matters a lot in a back 6.
IMO Payne has upside and that is why a strong club like the Dogs enquired about him after the Prelim in 2020, and in 2021 Lions offered him a contract for a further few years ,so those that really should know, obviously see something in him. I do also, as he is still relatively young and has not had a decent crack at it due to ongoing injuries.
FWIW, I believe Andrews, Adams and Gardner are ahead of him, and I suppose if he can't get some regular exposure at AFL (don't think he will this year) then he might not progress as hoped or he leaves (or traded) to explore opportunities. He probably is not the only fringe player on our list in that situation.
