Even though we have 2,600 points, when the Levi, Kako & Lombard comes out before Marshall, our remaining pick points go up in the draft, and we should have enough for Marshall.

We do have enough points if Ashcroft goes at 2. We dont have enough if Ashcroft goes 1.
I haven’t looked at the math yet, but I’m not counting on that yet.

I’m not even sure on how many picks we’re able to take to the draft. Is it 5 or 6.

Just had a quick look at the draft order. My initial guess is that Essendon will probably look to trade their first two picks for future picks and then use their later picks to match the Kako bid.

If that happens, Neither GC or Essendon will be using a heap of picks in front of our current picks. They’ll mostly be using picks around or behind our current 5th pick.

Again a quick look and guesstimate, I expect we’ll have to use 4 picks to match the Ashcroft bid. First pick moves up to where the bid is made, second and third picks are used up completely and shuffle to the very back of the draft, and fourth pick is partially used up and generates a residual pick in the 50’s.

The Lombard and Kako bids might see our remaining 3 picks move up 3 spots, but our current picks 49 & 60 move up an extra 2 spots because of the Ashcroft bid, so we might have picks 44, 50 & 55 to match the Marshall bid.

I think that gives us ~820 odd points to match a Marshall. So we should be good.

Belatedly listening to the roar deal and fish suggested our intention is that our final pick up will be Gallop.

Excited Lets Go GIF

I'd prefer if we got a KPF that was slightly taller than 194cm. Does anyone know if Gallop will grow any taller, and if so, what his final height will be?

You don't need height when you can plpw through KPD like they're made of feathers. 😎

Slow down grasshopper.
if Gallop was an A grade player he’d be gone in the first 30 picks.
Just cos he’s tall and can clunk the odd mark doesn’t mean he’s a Joe replacement.
Luke Lloyd a much better change of filling the void. I really do hope he comes on in 2025.

Quite unbelievable to think Dalions that he has won 3 premierships in a row with Sandy Dragons…and if 1m younger he would be contending for a 4th.

Very lucky to have him joining the Lions.
If he'd been one month younger would be have been allowed to play in the first season he won tho?

Both Fish and Dom were talking like Sam Day is a walk up start for round 1 surely he is only on the list for depth

I hope Lloyd comes on too, but he's still 'only' 193cm. Unless Ryan becomes AFL standard, that leaves Hipwood as the only KPF on our list taller than 195cm. Height isn't the most important attribute for a key forward; but having a varied and versatile list is.

Drafting key position players is such a lucky dip that I'd prefer we had another XL one. That could be through future drafts, trades or ensuring Ty keeps smashing the wheetbix.

Yep, I have a lot of hope for Lloyd to step into that tall forward role.
Hipwood has to do more ruck training this offseason and provide relief for Big O.

Reigning premier Brisbane is set to avoid paying top dollar for father-son gun Levi Ashcroft, with Richmond looking increasingly unlikely to place a bid on the midfielder at No. 1 in this month’s national draft.

If North Melbourne keeps hold of pick 2, a bid on Ashcroft may be left to Carlton at pick 3 — saving the Lions a significant number of draft points.

Brisbane would have to stump up 2,400 points (after a 20 per cent discount) to match a bid on Ashcroft at pick 1, but a bid at pick 3 would only cost it 1787 points.

It could be the difference between heading into next year with a points deficit or not, given the Lions will also need to match a bid on Academy member Sam Marshall around pick 20.

And later in the same article:

THE OTHER DRAFT GEM ON THE WAY TO LIONS
Brisbane academy prospect Marshall was bedridden for the Lions’ premiership triumph, but he was still left inspired by the players who will likely become his teammates in a fortnight.

Marshall soaked up the atmosphere in the rooms at the MCG a week earlier after Brisbane’s last gasp win over Geelong.

But the ball-winning midfielder, who could attract a rival bid late in the first round, picked up an illness which also kept him out of testing at the national combine testing in early October.

“I got to watch the prelim against Geelong. That was a pretty good game to watch, but just watched (the grand final) on TV. I was quite sick, so I was just in bed the whole time,” Marshall said.

“It was pretty disappointing.

“I didn’t have a ticket, but I probably could have somehow managed to get a ticket.”

While Marshall didn’t get to see it live like his Sandringham Dragons premiership teammate Levi Ashcroft, who jumped onto the ground post-game to join his Norm Smith Medal-winning brother Will, it lit a fire within him.

Especially after spending five weeks with the club at the start of the year, living with Lions star Hugh McCluggage and delisted defender Jaxon Prior.

“It was pretty cool, because I spent a fair bit of time with them in the pre-season,” Marshall said.

“Building that connection with most of them and just seeing them get the ultimate team success was great to see them get the premiership.

“To see guys like Will and stuff like that – not long ago they were in my shoes in under-18s, now they are out doing it on the biggest stage.

“So it is pretty inspiring and pretty cool.

“It’d be awesome to join the Lions, pretty close to home and stuff like that. But nothing is a guarantee, so happy to go anywhere I think.”

Marshall had a defining grand final performance of his own, taking out the best on ground medal in the Coates Talent League decider with 28 disposals, two goals and 175 SuperCoach points.

From Kawana on the Sunshine Coast, Marshall joined the Dragons program this year while boarding at Melbourne Grammar.

He said it took him a while to adjust, but he hit his straps when it mattered most.

“I thought I was building in the finals and thought I had a pretty decent finals series,” Marshall said.

“Then in the first quarter I got onto the end of a few, so it sort of gave me a bit of momentum throughout the game.

“It was good to get the win really because the whole team really, hadn’t had much team success with Melbourne Grammar. But I’ve really enjoyed all those sort of programs as well, so it was good to get the win in the end.”

Why was my first thought of what happened with Marc Murphy's situation.

Not the worst idea to go with the instant Joe replacement option for our best 23 for the first few games, and then start tinkering with the forward line if it doesn't work.
