I don't want a lot for Rortmas,
There is just one thing I need.
I don't care about St Kilda's...
inability to breed.
Yeah, we're the champions of our sport
Doubling-down with another rort

Levi, make my wish come trueeeee.
All I want for Rortmas, is youuuuuu!

Nope this post should be burned. Creative yes and well done for that but this is stinking song tune, my gosh makes me want to throw every radio in a supermarket off a bridge.

Interesting names. Reading through scouting reports, the tall forwards seem to have different key strengths.

Nicholls has excellent speed for a big man and gets down the ground a quite a bit, but isn't the most physical in marking contests. Might use his speed too much for separation rather than his body, but he can fill out and build up his strength on an AFL list. Has good field kicking, less so at set shots.

West is a strong contested marker. He brings good speed, strength, leap and aggression in contests. He isn't ideal KPF height, being only 194cm, though Charlie Curnow is also the same height, as is Ty Gallop for that matter. Rookie Me Central compares him to Logan Morris if he works on his field kicking and running capacity.

Burmeister is more of a ruck/forward. He has a great leap, having previously been a high jumper, plus he's mobile and aggressive and athletic. He also played on the wing in the CTL GF and kicked two goals. The knock on him is how raw he is. He has the upside but not the demonstrated production to go higher in the draft.

Overall, they all sound like decent prospects to mould, but none of them sound like they're head and shoulders above Gallop. West in particular seems to have a very similar profile to Gallop. Ultimately I think the club will just draft the local boy and give him a chance.

For comparisons:

West

Nicholls

Gallop

See I'm not wholly sold on that either. I reckon if you were starting from scratch you'd be better off focusing on key position players to start with. They're more likely to take longer to hit their prime. At the moment I guess North are running the risk of having an absolute gun midfield but nothing to kick to, and little to hold back the tide down the other end.
I broadly agree because they're a lot harder to get if you start picking outside the top 10 without a bit of luck. However if you put all your eggs in one basket or misjudge where you are you're also liable to screw yourself. So yeah, take the Patrick McCartins of the world but don't feel like it means you trade out of pick 5 for Carlisle or pass up on a McKay the following year. If you're taking a top 5 tall, double down and do it again if you have to.

Think across a lot of sports there is an unwillingness to ditch sunk costs and double down on positions if you miss.

Obviously afl is tough because players might take 4 years to get close to their peak and therefore will survive, but certainly in the NFL in a lot of positions you can know pretty quickly if a player isn’t ever going to be good enough.

Clearly not widely considered the best

Depends if the clubs in question want to leave a good impression with their draftees.

I wouldn't want a club to bid on someone, then have that matched, then have me picked. Makes it seem like I would not be what the club wanted.

For Richmond, North and Adelaide, the latter of which hasn't had a high draft pick turn good in ages, first impressions are important for their rebuilds.

I think it's the Saints who are at pick 5 who will match, but they're a basket-case to begin with.

Also unlike the NFL we have the capacity to have multiples of the same position for all but ruck usually anyway with them both being effective so taking that longer term risk doesn't have as much downside if it does pay off.

Most draftees are in that situation. Would whoever gets selected by Richmond at pick 6 be pissed they didn’t make him the number 1 pick?

Duursma last year was Norths 3rd choice. I doubt he holds that against them

It happens all the time

If we do see LAshcroft and Marshall slide, do we try to sneak in a +1 pick before Gallop or try to maximise points for next year?

If we took 4 draftees over the next 2 nights eg. Ashcroft/Marshall/Gallop/Gilder would that mean we would have to pass on the mooted acquisition of Sam Day?

Yes, unless another club drafts Craven or Joyce.

In saying that, I wouldn't be surprised if we try and get some more points next year when we trade tonight.

Very true. Not taking some talls early in the rebuild is very risky.

Actually its interesting seeing Richmond's approach tonight. There are a lot of mids that they can pick from early but will they spend the currency on the talls? Personally think they desperately need at least one or two tall forwards and waiting till the picks nearer 20 is risky
Yeah I really think if I was Richmond I would have been trying to stagger some of my picks into next year's draft. And I guess maybe they still will tonight.

And even then move 1 or 2 of those into the 2026 draft. I sort of question if taking 8 players in one draft is the best thing for your build, regardless of how good they are.
