Round 1 is flukey, anyone can beat anyone. West Coast beat us in the pre season this year and then a few weeks later we came out and beat Brisbane by 50 odd. Neither of those results were reflective of the quality of the respective teams. That will be a nervous way to start the season.
At a club where consistent trends and stability is abundant that doesn't stack up though. Yeah I agree that in general it does, but for us it doesn't.

We're 9-2 in round 1 games in the Hinkley era.

Our 2 losses were away games.

1 against Freo the eventual minor premier.
1 against Brisbane an eventual preliminary finalist.

If we lost at home, to the Eagles, it'd not just be a small upset. It'd be astronomical. Our issues don't start at beating shit teams, in minor round home fixtures.

We should expect to win easily.

Round 1 - Vs West Coast
Round 2 - @?
Round 3 - Vs ?
Round 4 - Vs Essendon

Looking like 3 home games in the first 4. The two we already know we would start heavy favourites in.
Round 3 means Easter weekend home, reckon we’ll get a home game against Brisbane pretty early (20 years since 2004), but Brisbane will usually get Collingwood at the Gabba on Easter Thursday.

Congratulations to the VFL on finding yet another way to give the "big 4 clubs" an advantage - an extra bye round.

Most likely around the Gather Round and to add a bigger break around the ANZAC Day game.

Genius.

And watch all those Interstaters squeal about it.
They still for some reason expect fairness, the dickheads.

It's not about being fair, it's about winning.

Hopefully the non-vic teams win all the Round 0 games. It's very possible with that draw.

GWS were flying late last year, could easily knock off Coll in round 1.
GC will hit the season with real pace, should take down Rich
Syd V Melb no reason why Syd can't win.
Bris V Carlton no reason why Bris can't win.

Would be a great start to the year. Watch the Vics whinge if they did lose them all.

Realistically the big advantage all these teams have is that they already have a real solid game out of the way before they line up against a side in their first hit out for the year the next week. Hopefully all games for all teams that played in Rnd 0, those teams play each other again in Rnd 1.

... the 2024 season will start with just four games on the weekend of March 7-9, two in each of NSW and Queensland, with the League today confirming the details of what it has labelled 'Opening Round'.

A full round one, featuring all 18 clubs, will then commence on Thursday, March 14 with the traditional Carlton v Richmond game at the MCG.

The eight teams involved in 'Opening Round' will have a bye at some point between rounds two and six, meaning all 18 clubs will have played the same number of games by the start of round seven.

I am speechless. You would think the sentences above were from the Beetota or the Shovel, to be honest. But it isn't ironic, it's real. The level of idiocy is outstanding.

Good luck to SuperCoach trying to sort that shit sandwich out.

Probably ground capacity. I am not sure what the exact crowd capacity would be at Alberton with the new construction. I would not mind a pre season trial at Alberton as they would probably fit the crowd in but gather round would be out of the question.

Construction should probably be finished by then, you’d think we’d have for seating than Norwood.
I think it maybe location public transport etc

I don’t think the opening round is that big of a deal, makes the season start earlier and some good match ups. Better than the standard Richmond v Carlton start which has never lived up to the hype.

Alberton actually has better public transport links than Norwood. Alberton has the train via Cheltenham station and the bus down Port Road. The ground capacity at Alberton is listed at 11,000 but I think that is questionable none the less there is no way Alberton would have enough capacity for a Port home game. Norwood probably gets the nod in Gather Round because it is closer to the city accommodation entertainment etc. Gather round is more of a tourist and promotional venture by the SA Government than anything else so proximity to the night life, casino etc. probably counts.

As an aside I was at Alberton in 1977 when the crowd record for Alberton was achieved. It was against Norwood and it was arguably the best game I had seen Russell Ebert play. He beat four different opponents on the day and was absolutely spent near the end of the game. The official attendance was 22,738 and I watched it all from upstairs near the members bar window. With ground redevelopments on the eastern side and upgraded safety requirements I reckon we would struggle to get half that crowd into Alberton these days.

I agree, focus some attention outside of Victoria for a change.

It may also be about sticking it to the NRL. South Sydney Rabbitos, Manly Sea Eagles, Sydney Roosters and Brisbane Broncos will be playing in Las Vegas on March 2nd and as a consequence there is only one NRL game scheduled for Sydney and one for Brisbane between the 7th and the 9th so maybe the AFL has decided to fill the void by focusing on Sydney and Brisbane?
