I hope Buller can have a big pre-season. Would love to see him put some pressure on McLean and Amartey

I see another Swans GF surprise in the making.

Horse: "Why don't we play Edwards"
MacPointy brothers: "Edwards?"
Horse: "Don't you see?"
Cox: "Oh, er, brilliant"
Kirk: "Our opposition can't plan for what they won't expect"
Cox rolls his eyes "Yeah, like, why don't we have just two players?"
Horse is intrigued. "Coxy, tell me more. What do you have planned?"
Cox isn't sure if Horse is just winding him up "Well, playing just two blokes will get us bugger all free kicks"
Matthews: "Yet we'll give away heaps of frees for the 6-6-6 rule alone"
Horse is genuinely aroused "So we would have the perfect excuse to lose and blame the umpires?"
"Or the ground" contributes Kirk
"So when we lose, sorry, if we lose, I can resort to a crying Pie blame out?"
"As demonstrated by Fly? Our fans will love it" chips in Matthews
"Four losses in four consecutive grand finals"
"That's got to be an AFL conspiracy"
"Has to be. Especially if we win the SCG games but only lose the MCG Grand Final"
"Umpiring?"
"Vic media bias?"
"And we can add ground length to our endless list of griefs"
"Bigfooty will have a melt down"
"It's no wonder we have such a huge supporter base"
"Yep, this is what they love"
"It's us vs them"
"Give the fans what they love"
"Sydney vs the AFL"
..............

"Er, pardon me Horse?"
"G'day Leon, didn't see you there. What is it?"
"What if it's GWS?"
"GWS? Why do you always go on about GWS?"
"I mean, what if it's GWS who beat us in the Grand Final?"
Cox looks stumped. The Macca brothers are stopped mid pointy. Matthews adopts his best big huggy bear look.

"Go on" frowns Horse
"It's just that our whole argument for sympathy and conspiracy will fall flat"
"Because?"
"They're a Sydney team too"

Horse takes a moment.
"But isn't that the ultimate conspiracy?"
"Yeah...." begins Cox
"Yeah too", finishes Matthews, a little uncertain. "It's like, the AFL punishes Sydney even more by making sure GWS wins?"
"So it's an interclub, interstate, football double conspiracy" exclaims Leon

"How about a conspiracy tied into a performance index attached to, say, Taylor Walker's single year contract extension?" smiles McPoint

"In a way so complex that the entire Swans bigfooty board will tear itself apart over the blame game?" Leon asks with more than a hint of sarcasm.

"But only if we sack you as proof of suspicion" chimes in our CEO.

As the McPointy brothers beging to cruelly waggle their index fingers at a crestfallen Leon Cameron, he makes one final appeal. "Couldn't we just play to win?"

Silence. Utter silence. The silence of a toad contemplating his next jump, the silence of a country railway line exactly two minutes after a train has passed or the silence of Swans fans at the SCG when the team falls behind and could really use some encouragement.

For a few moments the fog seems to lift, as the madness surrounding the coaching group almost clears. Almost...

"Who remembers the 2012 GF?" asks Jarrad McPoint "And who remembers the 2016?"

"You're right" admits Cameron. "The great falls of 2014, 2016 and <that which may not be named>. They shine universally to all Swans fans, as disconsolations that define our shared cultural grief."

"Sadly, it's true" admits Horse, "The bond of shared aggrievement. It begins with the fan-motivated adumbration of the losing Grand Final. An apocryphal story to fit into the ad hominem blame neatly ascribed at our personification of the AFL as a single evil animus. These cynosures coruscate and crepitate in the fan mindset to create and maintain our own apocryphal version of events which stand as our ever-lasting affranchisement against the bonds of the AFL"

"Thus the same cryptomnesia of losing grand finals binds multiple generations?" whispers Cox as the truth dawns on him

"Exactly", Horse pounds both front hooves upon the wooden floor. "These losses are billets-doux to Swans fans, past, present and future"

"Yeah" mumbles Matthews. "Like what you and he said"

Anyone know why Rob Innes is leaving? Our high level of fitness and low level of injury surely are due in significant part to him. And now §€!<>[ Carlton are reported to have recruited him. Has there been any talk of Rob’s likely replacement?

Probably for family reasons, and they probably threw the kitchen sink at him to go there.

Damn that's a tough one to cop. Should we win next week and go through it could be a Sam Reid dilemma all over again.
