I would be a bit surprised if we didn’t replace Jacks spot with someone straight away.
It’s more than likely that by time the MSD comes around we will have a spot open anyway.

I agree, doubt whether either of them get an AFL game this year, Young will be the next in line.
But I'd love to see Mirk up against an AFL quality ruck, just to see the result. If he had the tank to follow someone like Gawn around, it would be fun to watch.
I'm sure there are AFL rucks he will come up against in the VFL.

There is so much to play out. From reports we are waiting for mid season.

I would love to know the outcome of the debate as to our eligibility to put two Irish boys on the Cat B list. If Duffy has to go on to Cat A list as only one of them can be Cat B, we may just use the mid season draft vacancy to add him to the list.

We may get very creative around the rookie list to keep some players who may face an otherwise unjustified delisting at season’s end.

Suspect Moir was viewed and drafted as a long term replacement for Martin.

Elijah also has attributes that suggest he could be a dangerous medium forward

Monahan also looks like a viable selection

Beyond that, I think/hope we will continue to draft and trade to improve or rejuvenate what we have across the list

We need to find from our list or obtain by trade the following:

1. Quality ruck - we hope TDK or Pitto become this or both of them do. I believe TDK is ready to break out and become a top 5 ruck. If I am right, Pitto is great backup. We need to be realistic about this at the end of 2024 noting we need only a B+ grade ruck to win a flag

2. Quality third tall - I had hoped JSOS may become this. Jack Martin if fit, is. Old mate from Swans would have been perfect. This is our second biggest weakness. Hopefully we have someone step up

3. Quality Key Defender - this is our biggest weakness. Outside of Weitering we don't have a gun key back that can lock down key forwards. McGovern and Marchbank are more third talls. Young would need to improve significantly. The good news is there is a history of players coming from low levels or other clubs to fit this role. This is where all our capital goes if someone doesn't stand up this year.

4. Quality mid - we need a big possession accumulating midfielder to complement Walsh. Too often we don't have the ball in our hands. McLuggage would be perfect but I doubt he leaves. Could Hollands be this?

My prediction (probably unpopular) is we finish 7th or 8th or just miss finals due to adjusting to be the hunted and bad luck with injuries. We then take a hard look at the list, make some big swings to bring in a gun KPP and quality in the midfield to win a flag in 2025.

Hopefully I am wrong and we see continued growth and we win 17. Had the prelim been at the MCG we would have beaten the Lions. Had we won and played the Pies, we were the better team. My concern this year is Sydney, but I think their forward line is lacking. The sleeping giant is what Dimma does with the Suns. Dogs and Port I expect to improve. GWS I think will go backwards.

Only slightly more than a month to go CANNOT WAIT

and you were going so well........

I am a big realism fan and I believe in being honest about where I think we are at rather than losing my mind if we don’t go 23-0 and win the flag.

That said, I can assure you there will be no happier person than myself if we win the flag. I live in Brisbane but attend at least 15 games per year and have done since 2015. That should tell you something about my passion level!

Is something coming from the club re midseason draft v ssp ?

I'm all for realism but that reads more like fanfiction to me.

Yes, the club said (via Herald Sun.... just cant see the article now) they would be holding jacks list spot open and assess things again when the MSD rolls around.

The Blues have the list depth to cover Jack Silvagni’s recent ACL tear, with Jacob Weitering’s high-grade calf sprain some chance to keep him out of the early rounds of the year.
Carlton will not add a train-on player in coming weeks ahead of the summer rookie deadline, happy to keep a list spot open for the mid-season draft instead of finding a ruck-forward replacement.

We were the 4th highest disposal per game team and have a midfield of Walsh, Cripps, Cerra, Hewett, Kennedy and Acres on the wing. All are capable of 40+ disposal games and regularly have 30+

Not sure we need that type of mid at all if I'm honest.

Need a point of difference through the middle such as a Zac Bailey or Dusty type imo, however finding them is extremely difficult and rare

Where is this Stengle talk coming from?

Our salary cap? And do we even need another small forward?
chrissie hynde might suggest we already have class in pockets...........

Monahan looks a real wildcard - you can't help but be impressed with what we've seen of him so far on the track. Match day may be a bit of a different story at this stage of his journey, but you can see why Austin and co were keen to get him on board.

Could be a bit of a smoky to take on a half forward role over time as that DeGoey/Petracca burst type. Moir being more the dangerous half forward with great hands and deadly off either foot within 50m of goal.

The other wildcard of course is Matt Duffy. From what we've read, he also has some really impressive athleticism, and will be another oxygen brother when he finally arrives....which Vossy will no doubt love.

I can see him potentially slotting in that running half back role as Zaccy and Saad slowly drift off into the sunset.

And having both on the Cat B list will give us more flexibility going into the draft, or trading for needs.

I’ve always said, “if you don’t attend at least 16 games per year, your not a passionate supporter”.

Might be time to take a long hard look in the mirror BF and really reevaluate yourself mate

Interesting didn’t know that. Not a huge stats person, despite being big on SuperCoach. Hollands Sr will be the damaging mid. Huge wraps on him up here. I wish we had gotten Flanders as well but he broke out last year. Will be a gun

Good. We have the coverage. Use the first part of the year to look around and see what's available and if our needs change.

We have the options to cover Jack

Been very impressive. Won't surprise me if he plays this year

The beauty these days is that we have depth in most positions, so there's no need to bring him in unless the coaches and match committee feel he's ready for the cut and thrust of AFL - similar to Binnsy in 2023. Can't wait to see him in match conditions in the VFL early in the season. But he definitely has the body size and athleticism to step into the AFL, although he's still only a 19yo.

As I say, he could be a real wildcard for us in that half forward role as the damaging bull in a similar style of DeGoey and Petracca.

The other wildcard being our other Irish recruit Matt Duffy, who I reckon we've penciled in for a running half back role in time. I was checking out his highlights package the other night - you can really see him in that role with that burst of speed and athleticism. Seems to be good overhead as well, and kicks with either foot.

I have read we are waiting, just seems a bit strange to me, but if we were waiting, surely we would invite a few we had our eye on to come and train with us now, to get a look.

If we were to go with a mature age player, id hope we were basing our interest off more than the first 10 games of this season.

The guy who went to Geelong was there for everyone to get last MSD and had been putting solid seasons in for quite a while, I personally just aren’t seeing much benefit in waiting.

Reading this, you'd think we finished 14th last year....

Really?

Or perhaps it’s an objective look at our weaknesses from a lense of how do we create a dynasty. I want at least 3 flags in the next 7 years. I’m greedy

You know why Brady, Jordan, Kobe etc were so good? They looked for continuous improvement
