People are talking about a second KPD as a need for us.

I think Caleb Marchbank will surprise a few on here this season.

It appears Weitering likes him as his preferred partner in crime and the match committee agree when available.
Given his history though, supporters can be forgiven for not rushing to go all in just at this stage …

Maybe. He is a good ball reader and attacking Defender, but I don't see him in a one-on-one contest with Lynch.
I think he'll try cutting off delivery more than wrestle with any KPFs.

Key defenders right now are like liquid gold.

B McKay will be the highest paid player in 2024 despite being better than average. Esava got traded last year for a early 2nd round pick and a couple of late picks (which Geelong turned into Mitch Edwards and George Stevens), and he's also just a better than average player with athletic traits.

Collingwood just signed Josh Eyre in the SSP despite him suffering a hamstring that'll keep him out for 3 months. Dockers signed OMac back in October, and the Demons signed Marty Hore in November.

And we've just seen that Hawthorn has signed Ethan Phillips after the Blanck injury....and Sam Sofrinidis likely to get signed by * tomorrow after missing out at Collingwood.

You could only imagine what Weiters would be worth on the open market right now...and Young/S Durdin would be snapped up by another club in a heartbeat if they became available. I was kind of hoping that we may have jagged an Eyre or Sofrinidis though the SSP as a development player, but I imagine that our list management feel we have enough coverage in this area at least in the medium term.

It's definitely an area of need though we need to address at some stage over the next few years.
Hopefully and ideally we can recruit our own and develop them within the next few years which i also agree on, as you have indicated they are very important and hard to get unless you’re willing to pay whatever the price, no matter the age or quality…

Marchy Gov and Kempy are to me more the 3rd type tall defender, obviously height and the way players can use their bodies are not automatically aligned, i can’t see these three playing on many of the true power/class giant forwards of the competition…

Marchy looks to be the best suited out of the three, we still don’t quite know he’s full capabilities yet, Big Durds is a real unknown he’s either re-injurering and missing or not utilized when available, it would be great if Young could find that form from his first year and build on that, which we’ll just have to wait and see how he performs during the season…

We absolutely need to look at our next genuine key defender.

Aside from our other options, Weitering will be 27 when the next draft plays out. We would all love Youngy to reprise his performances if 2022 and cover the position. Reality is that Young will always be behind Weiters and has trouble fitting in to a second banana role structurally. Likely we will run with two of Marchbank, McGovern and Kemp to partner Weiters for the foreseeable future.

Youngy came to us for more opportunity after being shunted around by Bevo. If he can prove himself “up to it” again but be consigned to the twos as an insurance policy, the likelihood is that suitors will come knocking and he would be interested.
A young draftee is a no brainer. It is to be hoped we can identify a “diamond in the rough” that won’t require a high draft pick. I have little doubt potential bargains have been identified already and may even be on our VFL roster.

It is an absolute no brainer that we need a draftee or a young state leaguer in the coming draft or at very latest in the ‘25 intake. Not a hybrid, not a third tall, either a developing “star” KPD or an absolutely bankable stopper around who we can place quality 2nd and 3rd tall rebounding interceptor types.

A combative and athletic type with the ability to read the play possessing “elite” closing speed to intercept or spoil.

A number of clubs have proven that it is not always necessary to look in the first round to find your man, but indeed we need to find him. It is highly unlikely we will have cap space to poach a young gun elsewhere or snag a suitable free agent for our next generation.

I think most people are referring to the need for a project KPD over the next few years....the equivalent of big Lem, but down back.
Yep I can understand wanting that.

Not that it's entirely related, but Young and Big Durds are great insurance policies while we're in the flag window. I wouldn't be shipping either of them off in a hurry tbh. But I'm sure we could fit them and a developing KPD on the list.

Short term we could (possibly) accommodate a developing KPD and the two “big back ups”. I suspect we may be one spot short to actually do it. Thinking big Nigel needs to make himself next in line, genuinely ahead of Youngy to survive the cut, his rookie spot is likely to be critical.

I know you are aware we have already (virtually) committed to two Camporeale and then Matt Duffy for a rookie gig(Hope like hell he can be Cat B, but I suspect unlikely unless R.M. is promoted. By regs. as it stands, Boyd and Mirkov also need promotion to be retained. (I suspect we will de-list and re-rookie at least one main list player to facilitate the requirements as well)

I thought we'd already promoted Boyd - geez Austin has some headaches coming his way.

I know it's been the source of a bit of debate previously, but I'm very confident that Duffy can be signed as a Cat B rookie under the current set of rules.

One of the issues we had in 2023 was that big Dom was still on the Cat B list, so we weren't sure if we could sign another 2 international players on top of that. Of course Dom will no longer be a Cat B at the end of the year.

As far as I can tell, these are the current rules which appear fairly clear cut regarding international players. Previously the rules stated that only one Irish player could be placed on the Cat B list, but there's nothing stated here excluding a club signing 2 international players as Cat B rookies. It also doesn't mention anything about "Irish Players", only 'International Players'.

Would love you to be right. Has the clause restricting Irish Cat. B’s to one totally disappeared?

Scary thing is its hard to even think of affordable players that would make a significant difference for our team now. Acres, Cerra and Hewett were great pickups but they were very clear deficiencies for our list to be filled and we had the currency.

Trying to think of where our deficiencies now if Hollands and our small fwds take the jump we're expecting them to
Agreed - they've done well to keep on top of list deficiencies.

I think if Hollands and the small forwards get to where we need, then we start looking at thin spots, rather than bald patches.

Weitering's injury shows how reliant we are on him - good because he's amazing, but concerning because the jump to the next guy is huge.

Martin being healthy and in form changed our team also. But he's missed a lot of games...would say that 3rd goalkicking forward is a thin spots.

Let's presume (for the moment) that Fantasia stays fit... (fingers crossed as he is proven quality)

Do we really need all of Owies, Durds, Motts and OF on the list.

Essentially 4 specialist small forwards...?

Marchbank will do very very well as our CHB. If unhindered he'll be in the elite bracket, has always tracked as being that but has always been injured. Full preseason playing on the leagues best forward at training and fully fit to go with his elite talents.

Weitering is an elite fullback. We have plenty of fullback backup in Young and Durdin who are really good backup players.

CHB depth is fine as well, McGovern can easily move from the third tall role to CHB.

Then we have options in the break glass category. Lemmy. Harry McKay. But doubt it will ever get that far.

The only place for a key defender on our list is if they are an out and out gun who is athletic, tall and genuine quality.

The only spots on our list where depth is thin is with the second ruck (forward/ruck) position and onball position and that is pending the development of players who may step and be able to cover those roles.

TBH I think our best 22 is premiership winning quality. But it's our youth and depth that will win it for us. How well those who step in can step up. Those guys who most likely will not play in the grand final team but play during the season here and there. guys like O'Keeffe, Young, Durdin, Cincotta, Cowan, Carroll, Wilson, Kemp, etc etc. This is why losing Silvagni was a big loss. Whether he is best 22 is irrelevant. He will play games and he is cover where we are thin and he is potentially best 22 or probably will be at times.

It seems that way. There's a link to a webpage on the AFL website that makes reference to restricting each club to one Irish player, but that appears to be an old link from about 5 years ago.

There's no reference at all to Irish players in the 2021 document that I attached, only 'international players' after a rule change at that time. I think the AFL are keen on bringing in more players from other codes internationally, so have opened the doors with less restrictions.

Marchbank, McGovern and Kemp are wasted at CHB and should only play there at a pinch. All three are better suited as intercepting third talls and you don’t want them playing on the likes of Hipwood/Hawkins/JUH.

A serviceable AFL quality full back is at the top of my list at the end of the season. I have plenty of faith in Durdin and Young but not sure Voss and the coaches do.

Looking at the OOC list, a player like Jake Kolodjashnij would be the type I’d go for. UFA, wouldn’t cost the world, may want another chance at a premiership if Geelong continue their slide and we have a hole in our defence.

I think so. They're all good players. Usually we play 2 at a minimum. I think Mots will add the midfield string to his bow as well.

That will “sort” itself through the year. Almost certainly, at least one of them will move on at season’s end. We are going to have some unenviable choices to make at the end of the year. Cottrell, Fogarty and Cuningham enter that discussion too. While not pure small forwards, they play front half primarily. That section of the ground will be where our probable delistings come from along with possibly Jack Carroll, who, while highly promising (I “love” him) is unlikely to displace a long list of mids anytime soon.

I am sure none of those mentioned above deserve delisting (or trading), but rules are rules and three have to be delisted, traded or managed back to the rookie list. Those out of contract are in jeopardy. Ridiculously we have players in the debate for best ‘22 who could also find them selves in the debate for delisting.

Similarly, with Elijah as a hybrid, with Monahan developing along with Moir, it is unlikely the list squeeze would see out of contract Jack Martin continue if he struggles to get on the park again this year. He is a great piece, but our LTI/injury prone types have had a dedicated, patient rehab and build over the last 12-18 months. If we don’t achieve continuity, they are vulnerable.

There's usually an update published to the AFL website around this time of the year. Can't find it for this year yet, but it shouldn't be far away given the amendments announcement a week or so back.

2023 AFL rules (published 28-Feb-2023)

I believe you are correct on the Irish player limit. It did exist, but was removed some time back. Pretty sure it was for the 2021 season, but sadly, not all of the AFL web pages have been updated to reflect the change.

JK has struggled to get on the park for the Cats. He has had soft tissue injuries as well as lingering concussion. Similar lingering concussion issues ended the career of his brother. He is also more third tall than KPP.

I think we (myself definitely included) are a little disrespectful to Young and Durdin with these discussions at times. There are few current AFL “depth” defenders who are better than ours. We do have to look to the next generation, and the most cost effective is to develop our own while we have a window. JW is 27 at the end of the year. Forwards are getting bigger and often faster, so a dedicated gun or reliable stopper is a must. Many clubs these days are going for more mobile hybrid second and third tall defenders, but we all need a beast “wrangler”.

Has played 19 and 23 games over the last two years. Reckon he plays a bit taller and is more defensive minded than our boys. Cats preferred him to the younger and more athletic Esava, he is nothing spectacular but quite reliable.

Of the OOC players he seems within our means. I wonder if we have the room to make a play for a bigger name.

JK will turn 30 next year and is the same height as CM but is behind him on all stats except turnovers. Cats preferred him to Esava because Esava is unreliable. Fits in at the Cats because they have Stewart and Henry helping him in the air.

Definitely not a player I would go after.
