People are talking about a second KPD as a need for us.
I think Caleb Marchbank will surprise a few on here this season.

Maybe. He is a good ball reader and attacking Defender, but I don't see him in a one-on-one contest with Lynch.People are talking about a second KPD as a need for us.

I think most people are referring to the need for a project KPD over the next few years....the equivalent of big Lem, but down back.People are talking about a second KPD as a need for us.

Hopefully and ideally we can recruit our own and develop them within the next few years which i also agree on, as you have indicated they are very important and hard to get unless you’re willing to pay whatever the price, no matter the age or quality…Key defenders right now are like liquid gold.
B McKay will be the highest paid player in 2024 despite being better than average. Esava got traded last year for a early 2nd round pick and a couple of late picks (which Geelong turned into Mitch Edwards and George Stevens), and he's also just a better than average player with athletic traits.
Collingwood just signed Josh Eyre in the SSP despite him suffering a hamstring that'll keep him out for 3 months. Dockers signed OMac back in October, and the Demons signed Marty Hore in November.
And we've just seen that Hawthorn has signed Ethan Phillips after the Blanck injury....and Sam Sofrinidis likely to get signed by * tomorrow after missing out at Collingwood.
You could only imagine what Weiters would be worth on the open market right now...and Young/S Durdin would be snapped up by another club in a heartbeat if they became available. I was kind of hoping that we may have jagged an Eyre or Sofrinidis though the SSP as a development player, but I imagine that our list management feel we have enough coverage in this area at least in the medium term.
It's definitely an area of need though we need to address at some stage over the next few years.
We absolutely need to look at our next genuine key defender.Hopefully and ideally we can recruit our own and develop them within the next few years which i also agree on, as you have indicated they are very important and hard to get unless you’re willing to pay whatever the price, no matter the age or quality…
Marchy Gov and Kempy are to me more the 3rd type tall defender, obviously height and the way players can use their bodies are not automatically aligned, i can’t see these three playing on many of the true power/class giant forwards of the competition…
Marchy looks to be the best suited out of the three, we still don’t quite know he’s full capabilities yet, Big Durds is a real unknown he’s either re-injurering and missing or not utilized when available, it would be great if Young could find that form from his first year and build on that, which we’ll just have to wait and see how he performs during the season…
Yep I can understand wanting that.I think most people are referring to the need for a project KPD over the next few years....the equivalent of big Lem, but down back.
Short term we could (possibly) accommodate a developing KPD and the two “big back ups”. I suspect we may be one spot short to actually do it. Thinking big Nigel needs to make himself next in line, genuinely ahead of Youngy to survive the cut, his rookie spot is likely to be critical.Yep I can understand wanting that.
Not that it's entirely related, but Young and Big Durds are great insurance policies while we're in the flag window. I wouldn't be shipping either of them off in a hurry tbh. But I'm sure we could fit them and a developing KPD on the list.

I know you are aware we have already (virtually) committed to two Camporeale and then Matt Duffy for a rookie gig(Hope like hell he can be Cat B, but I suspect unlikely unless R.M. is promoted. By regs. as it stands, Boyd and Mirkov also need promotion to be retained. (I suspect we will de-list and re-rookie at least one main list player to facilitate the requirements as well)
I know it's been the source of a bit of debate previously, but I'm very confident that Duffy can be signed as a Cat B rookie under the current set of rules.Short term we could (possibly) accommodate a developing KPD and the two “big back ups”. Would love you to be right. Has the clause restricting Irish Cat. B’s to one totally disappeared?I know it's been the source of a bit of debate previously, but I'm very confident that Duffy can be signed as a Cat B rookie under the current set of rules.
One of the issues we had in 2023 was that big Dom was still on the Cat B list, so we weren't sure if we could sign another 2 international players on top of that. Of course Dom will no longer be a Cat B at the end of the year.
As far as I can tell, these are the current rules which appear fairly clear cut regarding international players. Previously the rules stated that only one Irish player could be placed on the Cat B list, but there's nothing stated here excluding a club signing 2 international players as Cat B rookies. It also doesn't mention anything about "Irish Players", only 'International Players'.

Agreed - they've done well to keep on top of list deficiencies.Scary thing is its hard to even think of affordable players that would make a significant difference for our team now. Acres, Cerra and Hewett were great pickups but they were very clear deficiencies for our list to be filled and we had the currency.
Trying to think of where our deficiencies now if Hollands and our small fwds take the jump we're expecting them to
It seems that way. There's a link to a webpage on the AFL website that makes reference to restricting each club to one Irish player, but that appears to be an old link from about 5 years ago.Would love you to be right. Has the clause restricting Irish Cat. B’s to one totally disappeared?
Let's presume (for the moment) that Fantasia stays fit... (fingers crossed as he is proven quality)
Do we really need all of Owies, Durds, Motts and OF on the list.
Essentially 4 specialist small forwards...?
That will “sort” itself through the year. Almost certainly, at least one of them will move on at season’s end. We are going to have some unenviable choices to make at the end of the year. Cottrell, Fogarty and Cuningham enter that discussion too. While not pure small forwards, they play front half primarily. That section of the ground will be where our probable delistings come from along with possibly Jack Carroll, who, while highly promising (I “love” him) is unlikely to displace a long list of mids anytime soon.Let's presume (for the moment) that Fantasia stays fit... There's usually an update published to the AFL website around this time of the year. Can't find it for this year yet, but it shouldn't be far away given the amendments announcement a week or so back.It seems that way. There's a link to a webpage on the AFL website that makes reference to restricting each club to one Irish player, but that appears to be an old link from about 5 years ago.
There's no reference at all to Irish players in the 2021 document that I attached, only 'international players' after a rule change at that time. I think the AFL are keen on bringing in more players from other codes internationally, so have opened the doors with less restrictions.
AFL rule changes to allow increased recruiting in Ireland
Clubs will now be allowed to list two Irishmen in the Category B list for rookies, up from the maximum of one that had been in place.www.irishexaminer.com
JK has struggled to get on the park for the Cats. He has had soft tissue injuries as well as lingering concussion. Similar lingering concussion issues ended the career of his brother. He is also more third tall than KPP.Marchbank, McGovern and Kemp are wasted at CHB and should only play there at a pinch. All three are better suited as intercepting third talls and you don’t want them playing on the likes of Hipwood/Hawkins/JUH.
A serviceable AFL quality full back is at the top of my list at the end of the season. I have plenty of faith in Durdin and Young but not sure Voss and the coaches do.
Looking at the OOC list, a player like Jake Kolodjashnij would be the type I’d go for. UFA, wouldn’t cost the world, may want another chance at a premiership if Geelong continue their slide and we have a hole in our defence.

JK will turn 30 next year and is the same height as CM but is behind him on all stats except turnovers. Cats preferred him to Esava because Esava is unreliable. Fits in at the Cats because they have Stewart and Henry helping him in the air.Has played 19 and 23 games over the last two years. Reckon he plays a bit taller and is more defensive minded than our boys. Cats preferred him to the younger and more athletic Esava, he is nothing spectacular but quite reliable.
Of the OOC players he seems within our means. I wonder if we have the room to make a play for a bigger name.
I thought the intent was to leave the spot free for the next period midseason?SPP deadline today. Who did we pick up?
