Lions spearhead set to cash in on miracle in Sydney - Jay Clark

Brisbane Lions’ spearhead Joe Daniher looks set to cash in on his continued excellent form with a contract extension beyond next season.
The hero of Saturday night’s semi-final win who slotted two clutch set shot goals to sink GWS Giants remains one of the best key forwards in the game.
It included a 40m set shot from the boundary to put the Lions in front with three minutes remaining from a spot which has delivered 28 per cent success rate for left footers since 2013.
According to Champion Data, there have been 29 goals from 104 shots from left footers in that position over the past 12 years including 34 behinds and 41 complete misses.
Daniher, 30, is contracted to Brisbane until the end of 2025, but the spearhead is on track to ink an early extension in reward for his brilliant goal kicking after finishing fourth in the Coleman Medal race (56 goals) this year.
Despite some major groin problems in his last two years at Essendon, Daniher has proven to be ultra-reliable at Brisbane and is playing the best football of his career up north in recent years.
The club has faith he will continue to help lead the forward line as well as helping groom young key forward Logan Morris in the early part of his AFL career.
Daniher has booted 202 goals from 95 games at Brisbane since crossing from Essendon in 2021 which netted the Bombers pick nine (Archie Perkins) as free agency compensation.
Brisbane initially signed him to a three-year deal but extended his contract until the end of 2025 after only one season in Brisbane colours.
While that manoeuvre attracted criticism, the league found the club did not break free agency rules and cleared the club of any wrongdoing despite rivals raising their eyebrows.
Daniher has delivered on the deal and shone on the big stage bagging 16 goals across his past five finals including four majors against the Giants on Saturday night.
Daniher was one of Brisbane’s best players in last year’s Grand Final loss and will be a key plank in the Lions’ plot to upset Geelong at the MCG on Saturday.
Daniher has gone goalless in two of his last three games against Geelong including the Round 6 loss to Geelong when he was forced into the ruck.

NB made an interesting suggestion in the VFL thread. ‘Move Prior on to the ball”. Never considered it myself before, but with Lyon leaving and some uncertainty around Dev, we will be a bit small and light around the ball next year in the VFL. I like Prior but iMHO he is too short for a kpd and not agile enough to be a small defender in the AFL. Maybe playing him on the ball in the VFL next year might open up a career opportunity at AFL.
I still don't know if Prior sticks around. We need to cut five players, assuming we only bring in Levi and Marshall this summer. We need to cut six if we want anyone else in.

Lyons is gone, Lane, Michael, Madden are surely to follow, and that leaves one more to axe between Beecken, Craven and Prior. You'd think Beecken has shown enough to stick around. So Prior might have to go if we want anyone else, or if the club think Craven still has a future.

Dev likely to be traded too and while I have no idea if anyone would take him, you would think Tunstill would be wanting out too.

How do we see Zakostelsky after a year in the system?

One year into afl his afl journey. Has done fine, albeit while dealing with the rigours of afl training etc.

Not going to know a hell of a lot after a year. If you’re asking whether he is a bust, the answer is no.

We'll see what happens. Who knows if West Coast want them, but if they don't, both still have contracts here. May be best for both parties if they find another club.

I think for us we'd like to offload 1 which for me would be Dev. I think he has more AFL level qualities than Tunstill.

I know Ashcroft has arrived and he shows a lot of "leading the way" traits already. But with Berry I feel we have another underrated leader who could've become much bigger for us if he was given the space.

I always wonder what we would've transpired if he was given the keys instead of Andrews/Neale and whether it would've elevated him to another level over the last few years. Sometimes he gives me the Michael Voss vibes, running through the brickwall type. Who knows, if he was asked to take the wheel he might've even got us over the line in the biggest stage.

Given a lot of talk about both Pies and Dees wanting mids, I wouldn't be surprised if Dev made his way to Melbourne.

I don't see why anyone else would be interested in Tunstill; personally don't think he's AFL material sadly and every time he's gotten a game, including his debut, have been suprised he's who we've brought in.

IMO Reece Torrent(really like his disposal by foot) although a different type of player has shown more AFL traits than Jimmy Tunstill.

The argument for keeping Prior, I guess, is that he is proven depth and not too many would have an issue with him playing firsts, if needed, considering his form this year.

He can play tall (has had to this season) and we are injury prone in the medium/tall defender department.

I'd try to keep him if possible but I don't think he would have a problem getting games elsewhere.

Not impressed, sadly. Starting a long way behind some of the other recent recruits
When watching the VFL early in the season i thought ZZ did not look like getting to AFL standard.
My thoughts at the time were he looked either a bit lost or not interested.
I think he was injured early with his first game being round 6, also possibly a bit homesick.
As the year progressed, he looked a little more settled and grew in confidence.
He got to play 16 VFL games in his first year so that helps with his development.
Next year with another preseason under his belt will tell if he has progressed.
One thing you can't teach is how tall you are.
He is a good size being 196cm and 89kg.

Berry's taken his game to a more consistent higher level and is given an important role.

Ah Chee has been given a lockdown role on the opposition's best defenders and also trusted to be the spare down back in a tight finish. So I think internally they have a lot of faith in him as well.

It's the improvement in guys like this that will get us to a flag if we're good enough.

I know the coaches really rated Tunstill at the start of the '23 year and there was a train of thought that he'd be a regular Senior player.

Dunno what's happened there, obviously just hasn't progressed as anticipated.
Turns it over and is weak in the tackle. Not strong enough to play inside and not enough quality to play on the outside.

Only position I see him playing is as a pressure forward. Has a good leap and can mark.

ZZ definitely improved as the year went on. To make it he has to improve his disposal though. Close my eyes every time he goes to kick and handball.

I think his best position for his skill set would be as a hard running follow up ruckman but probably too undersized to play that role at AFL level against the premium rucks.

Perhaps its his character, but I was hoping we'd have taken Arie Shoenmaker who Saints took and debuted against us with 27 touches over ZZ. From what I've seen of Arie, he is far more likely to succeed than ZZ.
Definitely seen to have character issues. I'm not sure he was on our draft board at all because of it (can't recall for certain).

I wouldn’t be disappointed with us throwing Taberner a rookie lifeline if he were interested.
An injury to Hipwood or Daniher and we are extremely vulnerable down there for mature KP depth. 2 x leading goal kicker, 173 goals, he’s at least someone that can take a mark or consistently make a contest.
It’s highly likely Ryan won’t play another AFL game based on what he has shown so far (if possible I’d be looking to move him onto the Rookie list with a view to an early termination of his contract at the end of next year). If it’s not Taberner, I’d still be looking for someone - Logan has a lot of talent but he’s already exceeded expectations this year and it’s a lot to ask to play as the second tall at 20 should that be needed.
