It indicates we had no draft capital to pry someone out and there were no attractive FAs available. We may have to do the same thing next year but I'd expect our entire list focus for the next 12 months is going to be centered around a Joe replacement and potentially a new ruck.

I actually think we would already have Fogarty on our list had his form not taken off overnight in 2023. Adelaide has put a lot of work into him to I think convince him to stay - especially around leadership roles etc.

Loser mentality from Fog, passing up a shot at a flag just to be a mid-afternoon host on Triple M Adelaide when he retires. Its not impressive at all, pretty sure Rockliff is still doing stuff for them despite having moved back to Queensland.

Herald Sun: Futures of Matt Rowell and Oscar Allen uncertain as rival clubs circle stars

If you be a dear & cut & past that article content, that'd be super.
Rowell is just that he's putting off contract talks to next year to see if Gold Coast doesn't fade out in the 2nd half of the year like normal. The Allen bit is below:

Eagles star forward Allen and West Coast will recommence contract talks now that the trade and draft period is over.
But at this stage their offer is not longer than five seasons even though Allen is only 25 years old.
Allen would like a six or seven-year contract as a star free agent after Adelaide’s Darcy Fogarty signed a six-yearpre-free agent deal and Richmond’s Noah Balta was locked in for seven more seasons after giving away his free agency rights.
Allen is back in training after playing the last 10 games after a 14-week spell out with a knee injury and while he will have to manage that knee for the rest of his career is confident he can play well into his 30s.
But at this stage West Coast is still cautious on the kind of long-term deals that saw them lock in Andrew Gaff for six seasons as he played only five games in his final year.
The club was able to extricate itself from the last year of Jack Darling’s long-term deal by trading him to North Melbourne for a late pick.
But the Eagles signed Nic Naitanui for two more years despite knee issues in 2022 and he did not play another game, retiring halfway through the contract.
So West Coast will have to weigh rival interest and continue negotiations with Allen’s management, aware it could open them up to him leaving for a club prepared to risk his injury history with a long-term deal.

Yeah, if you have a history of injury, asking for six or seven years is just taking the piss IMO. I actually think five is generous, but on the flip side, their medical team know him well & if they're prepared to offer five, then there's not much difference in six lol.

Unlike a lot the Melbourne recruits in recent years where the warmer weather seems to have helped, it doesn’t even come into consideration with Allen who’ll also be without the beautiful beaches that Perth has close to town whether that helps players. Given the stories about Allen’s medical issues, him and long term deals beyond 3-4 years is massively frought with danger in me view.

It begins....
Obviously it would fantastic if it turns out Allen is the one we have locked in.

However, surely more signs still point to it being Lewis (despite being contracted) given he already has close relationships with some of our players, has struggled to get consistently on the park the last few years (looking at our medicos), would know of the Lions culture through the various connections that have come to us from the Hawks and we are likely have the draft capital to do it next year.

Aside from Reid, WCE also have the cap room to heavily front end any Allen deal whilst they are building + his earning post footy in WA being a one club, ex skipper would have to factor in too.

Whose deal would cost less year to year, Allen or Naughton?

Just realised the Bulldogs also drafted Jordan Croft as a tall forward. So they have Naughton, Ugle-Hagan, Darcy and Croft whose best position Is KPF. Surely that's too many, and Naughton is probably the odd man out given he isn't an academy or F/S player. He'd also be able to slot in our team straight away without needing more time to develop.

$ doesn't concern me - what are we trading for Naughton though? I know from next year you can do two years of future trading, but I think that will just have an inflationary effect on trade prices.

Could be cap dump

I figure the ideal time to shake someone loose from the Bulldogs is when their young stars come up for new contracts. Darcy is OOC at the end of next year and Jamarra is OOC the year after. If they both get fat contracts then Naughton might become a salary dump and come relatively cheap.

Soooo... how would we rank them ?

Naughton, Allan, Lewis
Would be my order I think.

Not sure who would be best team wise though. btw think there may be a sneak chance the lock in is actually Joey coming back. Just having a year off to smell the roses lol.

Question mark over Allan’s knee aside I’d have Allan and Naughton on the same rung, either would be fine. Lewis a couple of rungs below, especially with the injury history and inability to stay on the park.

I’d have Allen, then daylight.

Naughton is a good contested mark and set shot for goal, but does sfa in any other part of the game. He’s lucky if makes 2 goals a season from open play. And if he doesn’t mark the ball, he’s a witches hat.

His career average is at 52% for goal kicking.
A good set shot is not something I have ever associated with Naughton.
Good contested mark, I will give you that.
But I personally think Bevo needs to bite the bullet and put him back.

That’s probably fair. If I could have a pick out of the three, subject to his knee, it’d be Allen. But I wouldn’t have him light years ahead or be disappointed with naughton.
