Lane we picked up in the 2021 preseason draft which i thought was a very strange choice at the time.
He looked like he had something to work with the reserves games I saw in his first year, but safe to say he hasn't come on as hoped - but realistically, any ruck is always a massive crap shoot. Taking a player in the rookie draft or the midseason draft is just another lottery ticket.

Like many things in life someone hits on something profitable and everyone presumes it could be happening to them.

So someone unearths a great player in the midseason draft one year and the supporters of every other club say we should be doing that. It's really mostly a fluke and fwiiw I wouldn't be hanging my hat on us improving our team or even stabilising it on anyone picked up this midseason.

As I recall, Ainsworth was hoping to be picked up by the Lions during his draft year.
He secretly has always wanted to play for us.

Without sounding too mercenary and there are other issues involved but if you realistically look at where Charlie and Linc are at he must be on our radar.

Charlie has had to contend with injury issues all year so I'm still not sure whether he's seen his best days or whether he'll come back stronger when fully fit. He's a proven gun so maybe this is just the little flat spot in his career.

Would be a fair turnaround from when he confronted Lynch, when he told the Suns playing group he was leaving.
Seems to be happening more often these days. When young they buy all into being a one club player and get upset at anyone wanting to do something different. Then they get older, their place in the team is pressured, they get great offers from other clubs and start thinking about their family future and the idea of moving doesnt seem to bad.

I dont mind the idea of Ainsworth as he is an ok player, but Im not sure he is the type of small forward or mid we really need. Im not sure he is the lightening quick to be a Charlie replacement or really a need in the midfield.

Im still wondering if we could pry out one of North's excess mids? They have drafted too many of the same type so wonder if any could be an option

If North draft Smillie at the end of the year, there should be a big watch on LDU as a restricted free agent at the end of next season.

100% this. Other than seemingly being linked to the Lions early days, I don't get the fascination.
Just my opinion, but I believe he’s a very hard worker as a link player between the midfield and forwards.

He’s not lightening fast, but we’re unlikely to find a Cameron replacement in our academy or as a rookie pick in the draft either.

Certainly a harder worker than Zac Bailey, and has the type of character our recruiters look for.

I just don't think we needed a ruck at that time.
Going on memory we were short a forward if we needed a player.

Daley mentioned we may take 3 in the MSD.
I just hope we don't take 3 because we can.
Whoever we may have an eye on i hope they are AFL ready now in the recruiters' eyes.
I would rather pass if they are speculative picks like Lane unless it's just 6 months.

We have ample opportunities to find players for the 2025 season but only one chance to plug some holes for 2024.
We may get lucky and find someone but our luck this year has not been good.

The reason this will never work is that no major national sporting competition in the world has half the competitions teams in the same city. It is a total non-starter and I'm surprised the AFL even tried to progress it.

Some discussion on Ben Thomas as a MSD prospect. I ve been googling him to try and find out more background. Can’t find anything. Would be interested in age, height and weight (if you can ask that now). It’s hard on the vfl stream to get a sense of whether or not his body is afl ready. From what I can pick up seems to have really good forward craft, just knows where to run. Not sure if he is especially fast. Great kick for goal.
What can those who watch vfl live add?

I'm pretty sure the commentators on the weekend were saying that Ben Thomas was playing the level below QAFL not that long ago so might not be that much information out there about him.

Saw that and as someone who has always been dead against any form of mid season list movement particularly in the form of trading (fwiw, I’m against the mid season draft too) I hope the AFL hold firm. It’s detrimental to all intestate teams and I think once the season starts it is up to the club and its recruitment to ensure you have a squad to get you all the way through.

We aren’t European football or other sports that play two and three times more games than afl so I’m happy with the news. Again I don’t get why people get excited at trade period when these people have a sugar hit or some no name player or name player for that matter moving from one to another. So what; what’s exciting about that?

The VFL app has his height at 177cm but nothing else.
