I want Dale Morris too. Screw the defense coaching role, he's doing a great job already so we might as well have him on the ground. While we are at it let's get Daniel Rich back as well, I was sad when he left at 275 games - would like to nudge him along to 300 :)

You're being silly, we can only take one if Hodge comes back.

Hear me out.

We draft Chris Fagan, that way he can be out there coaching the boys all over the ground in real time.
Elixuh your on fire today. Another brain-storm of an idea. I like it.

Lloyd did play 23 games last year in a very good team

Would definitely take him if we are 6-2, finals bound and need experienced players who can be the top up to push us along.

We are travelling mid-tier at best and have a chance to experiment with our list here. If we decide to go with second chance for Lloyd - it is a pretty easy/lazy option we're taking in my view.

The benefit of Lloyd is, if he has the fitness, he is plug and play because he knows our system. If we are taking 3 in the MSD then Lloyd isn’t a terrible option for one of those spots.

Would Lloyd be able to lace up for the reserves team without being drafted? I seem to recall some coaching staff doing that in years past. Mind you it wasn't the VFL then.

Leigh Harding did

Drafting him would be a clear indication the club doesn’t agree with you around the state of our finals chances this year

And it’s not like it’ll be the only pick, if we see talented kids available then we can still take them

Also worth remembering the bulk of mid season draft picks are duds. If we can get 6 games out of Lloyd that’s probably a decent return

The hilarious thing would be if he nominated for the MSD and was drafted by another club. Uhhh good news bad news. The bad news is one of our coaches has been drafted to Norf. Wait, there is no good news.

I haven't clicked the link and I'm already sold.

The Lloyd resurgence...

Would you rather Lloyd and 2 players taken in the 7th round of the draft or 3 players taken in the 7th round of the draft?

Because our players are dumbasses? And have no idea?

Average take there.

You think we're going to find four diamonds in the rough in the MSD? At best we'll find a fringe senior player.
But players can’t be experts according to some on this board.

Thing is Geelong gave Mannagh a two year contact and all he had to do was move from western suburbs of Melbourne to Geelong.

Asking players to uproot their life for 3-4 months (likely from interstate) with no promise of an ongoing spot at the club is a hard sell. Sure we can sign them to 18 month contracts, but then we handicap ourselves at the end of this year.
We can probably sign one player for 18 months without screwing ourselves, if we delisted Lyons, Prior, Lane, Madden and Joyce at the end of the season. The rest would probably have to be 6 months, I agree. But in any case, we're still better off trying some of the more promising players kicking around the QAFL than a 32 year old has been. Think of it like lottery tickets, there may be a small chance that any of them make it, but that means you're better off having four lottery tickets than three.

I think more to the point, from what I saw was that just because someone is a three time premiership player & Brownlow medalist doesn't make them an expert on the game. It makes them a very very very good former footballer.

I'd agree with this narrative usually for a AFL draft. You've capped the drafting age at 18 and you're comparing the bunch of 18 year olds on average across the whole country.

For mid-season, my view is it starts from 19 year old all the way to 24/25 depending on the needs of the club. Cats picked up Shaun Mannagh at 26 last year. I don't believe in this shallow pool narrative at all in such an open age market. I'd say it's lazy journalism at best and there is definitely talent out there for the scouts who really go looking.
The national draft is not capped at 18. Plenty of mature age players get drafted in the national draft. Geelong picked up 3 in last year’s national draft, which is a big reason why this year’s MSD is particularly shallow.

I can understand the Lions thinking.

These spots take up list spots, either rookie list spots, or senior list spots if we want to keep them, and already have a full rookie list come next year.

It also means we have to delist more players at the end of this season, to keep successful MSD players and be able to take enough picks to the draft to potentially match up to 4 father son and academy kids.

Sure take 4 picks to the MSD, but a couple really need to be just 6 month deals.

Would you rather Lloyd and 2 players taken in the 7th round of the draft or 3 players taken in the 7th round of the draft?
3 players in the seventh round, easily. I'm with mpal6 , we are not winning the grand final this year, so it's a development year, where we should aim to build the best possible list for 2025. Is Daniel Lloyd going to be on the playing list for Round 1 in 2025 under any circumstances? If not, then I'd rather have three chances to unearth a diamond in the rough and polish it than two chances.

Then the answer is clear to me. Draft three or four Queenslanders on 6 month deals and tell them there's one roster spot available for next year that they're all competing for. Whoever trains the hardest and works their tail off in the VFL will get it. Competition breeds outcomes.

It's hard to argue if we set the 7th round narrative. Anyway, we shall see.

Lloyd as a player coach in the VFL sounds good to me. It's not like we're purely drafting for long term prospects. Our VFL depth has been pillaged due to guys moving up to AFL level. Lloyd would be a good shout for 6 months.

Probably a similar chance at least for 2026 than anyone else

But that’s what this is. Do you really think half a dozen games this year makes any difference?

It’s just an extension of last years draft

It’s weird because a lot are viewing this draft as us picking up direct replacements and less like filling in some depth in case it gets worse. Sure you can find diamonds in the rough but there’s barely one in each MSD and we have four picks.

Wouldn't he just immediately announce his retirement if that happened?
