I’m old enough to have seen Stephen Michael live.

Best I have seen. Does not get remembered enough, especially during Doug Nicholls rounds.
You know how it is, hes marked down by the VFL for not playing over there...... as such hes not that good in their eyes

Cheers. Yeah I did and they have just replied that they are very sorry (a few others were left out too). In the big scheme of things it’s of no real consequence, only an ego bruised.😜
Not allotting enough resources to edit check publications is a modern blight. Leads to some funnies though: disgraced artist the late Rolf Harris was reported in the West as once a 'national treasurer' - who knew?

Geez, you don't have to be that old. He was the best footballer in a WAFL competition that at the time was 10 times the current standard (maybe 100). I have no doubt that he would have been a standout in the VFL.

It's a cliche but he was the "prototype modern player".

Would start as first ruck. Rest forward and kick goals.

Then could go to CHB in the second half and just take lazy intercept marks.

People used to bang on about Adam Goodes and how versatile he was.

Adam was simply a lesser Stephen Michael (and I'm not trying to have a go at Goodes).

First (only?) Indigenous player to be named AA Captain.

First (only?) Indigenous player to win the Tassie medal.

Dominated as Ruck against at the national carnival when he won the Tassie medal.

And he wasn't even 190cm!!!!

Just an effing legend.

(I'll get back in my box now)

TI played against the reigning Brownlow medallist, Graham Moss, Ron Alexander, Ron Boucher (Jesus was scared of him), others I can't remember.
Michael was a freak, in a comp I would suggest was at least equal of the VFL, and perhaps even better. Early 80's

Also Andrew Purser who was a very good VFL player once he left Easts. Graeme Carter wasn't in the same league as Purser but was better than handy too.

They had some great contests too but only really one year when all played in good teams which was '79.

I'm an Old Easts/Sharks man and the derbies we had were fantastic and such a high standard. I should have hated many more Souths players than I did because of the rivalry but still enjoyed those games to get the chance to see Rioli, Michael, Vigona, McKay, Morley go around in matchups against Peake, Budgie, Kickett, Sewell, Taylor etc. Amazing contests but TI, Peake and Rioli always seemed a level above the rest.

Michael sure was the prototype modern player. At the other end of the spectrum, Graeme Moss wouldn't get close nowadays. Ron Boucher might if he improved his kicking but he also might get listed just by scaring the crap out of a recruiter and making him call his name come draft night.:)

Let's keep the reminiscing going a little longer. I'm a Swannies man, and while John Todd masterminded what I think was the best WAFL team ever to go around over a period of about 6 years, he never really found a way past Michael and Rioli (those two manhandled a very good Swans side in the 1980 GF). Was always fun to observe the Claremont grannies fearing what big bad Ronny might do to their boys. Usually his mere presence was enough.

That Swannies team was a cracker. I'm far from a Todd fan but that team was undeniably great. The talent Todd had was his blessing.

It'd be fun arguing who from that 79 EF team, the 80's Souths team and any of the triple Swans team's were the better units. Easts team hurt our legacy by diving to the bottom the next year. Swans team's legacy was certainly enhanced by the triple. Souths team's legacy hurt a little by both other teams. All 3 were magic teams.

Those Swans and Souths teams I would argue benefitted greatly from the pillaging of the EF team by Vic clubs. Yes you guys lost Beasley and the Narkle's at the end and Souths lost Rioli but compared to EF losing Peake, Sewell, Budgie, Taylor, Green, Purser, Lester-Smith, Judge all in 18 months, it made it hard to defend the Flag or build a dynasty like Swans did. Credit where its due though, 3 on the trot was historical.

If we keep all those guys I have no doubt we win 1+ over the next few years. I would've bet on Souths winning in 80 against anyone though.

Here's the first half of the 1980 GF:

Even better, it's the '79 one.

It is a great watch and I'm surprised there's so few on there or available to buy. The 1st Semi that year was an amazing game too. EF v EP with the good guys getting up by 4pts I think. Haven't even been able to find highlights of that one over the years.

This letter to Alex from a woman about her daughter is on the FFC IG feed and is bloody great.

Having Alex back to his good form has been sensational and this letter and story is just as good.

That's awesome :) Seriously teared up reading that

You put it very well.

Players were “afraid” of TI, he hit the ball and player like a bulldozer. If he didn’t get you, Basil would come along shortly and finish the job !!!!.

Saw TI playing against Roo ( Boucher - Black Duckies ), where they were at each other all day. They attacked a contest, collided and collapsed in a heap, the trainers ran on thinking one of them could be “dead”. The trainers got to the two players and lent down to attend to them, ....... in a flurry of arms and legs the trainers were forced away. TI & Roo slowly regained their feet (concussion protocols be damned), and wobbled off to the next contest. neither would admit defeat or show injury.

That’s the other thing about TI - he was indestructible, I don’t think he missed a game for six or so seasons. Bit like the old Hawthorn champion Michael Tuck.

I was there for that match. Old Easts started fast and were in front by a fair bit but in the 2nd half the Royals almost completed the come back. The noise was deafening near the end, so much so I didn’t hear the final siren go and just saw Peake take a mark at chf but then throw the ball up in the air! Thought he gone mad! 🤦🏻‍♂️Good days.
