Back in the early fifties my Dad was invited down to East Perth by Frank Allan (East Perth winger) to watch a young kid in their colts or something. I can remember Dad saying after the match that the young bloke was all arms and legs but he didn't watch the ball on the ground. He just knew where it was and he was looking where he could handball it once he'd picked the ball up. Polly of course as a 17/18 year old.

I can also remember him wiping out Spanner Spencer in a grand final when he was captain coach of West Perth.

I always loved watching him play. Ther was another Sister Kates kid who played with him at East Perth but the name eludes me.

Ted “Square” Kilmurray.

Buddy is good, Polly was far gooder.

I have a similar story about a young Buddy Franklin playing for Perth colts. The talk around the traps was huge and he certainly didn't let me down the day I went along to see him. He was levels above the poor other kids playing.

I think it's impossible to compare players from different eras. Both, and others too are exceptional football talents.

FWIW, my Dad - and hes seen a fair bit of footy, says Polly Farmer is the best footballer (indigenous or not) at any level he has seen. Hard to believe he could be better than Carey, Ablett etc but he reckons he was.

Polly was just a little before my time but has a phenomenal reputation from those who saw him in his prime.

Buddy may be the most freakish athlete to ever play the game. It took all of that freakish ability to kick 1000 career goals in the modern game. Doubtful that it will be repeated for a long time.

Buddy didnt revultionize the game whereas Polly did.

Hes still a tremendous player though
Footy was a far more primitive game in the 50s.

Let’s put it this way, Walls introduced the Huddle in the 80s, which revolutionised footy from being man-on-man defensive structures to what it is today, and no one thinks he’s the greatest coach.
