Any time anyone gives me shit about our recent list management, I will just remember these words:

But [West Coast] are in desperate need for a wealth of young talent – after having just six picks inside the top 20 in the past decade. And three of those have come in the past two drafts, while two of those top 20 players are no longer on their list.

The reality is our list management, in finding and securing longterm a core of young talent, has been pretty good.

Colin Young, the cowboy, has done his best to **** with it and we have been too aggressive in preserving cap space for the future at the expense of the now, but over-all the strategy has been sound.

West Coast nuffies who want to brag about how none of their players leave just fail to realise that no-one wants any of their players. They'll struggle to retain high draft gen-Z players from the east, once they have some.

Meh, at least they have a flag to show for it.

Here's another take on it, looking at top 10 picks in the past decade not top 20 picks

The real losers are Port - they have a net top 10 yield over a decade of two players (one drafted, one traded in) and nothing to show for it

Port net yield two top 10 draft picks in a decade/ no flag/ no grand final

versus

Geelong - 2/1/2
Eagles - 2/1/2
Richmond 3/3/3
Hawthorn 4/2/2

At the other end of the scale, for those interested, we're grouped in the Waiting for Godot group with only the bulldogs the anomaly
Net top 10 trade figure in calculated by number drafted - number traded out + number traded in

Norf 10/0/0
Essendon 9/0/0
Carlton 8/0/0
*Freo 8/0/0
Bulldogs 8/1/2
Gold Coast 7/0/0

* I excluded Aish since he didn't come to us direct from the club that drafted him, if we include Aish we're 9/0/0

So a while ago, (Nov 2021) in a draft day thread that was moving quickly I posted this:

Some scuttlebutt from a friend of a friend. Back in 2016 we took Logue at 8. It was the sensible option. Tall and local. But it could easily have been someone else.
So my uncle's friend said Lloyd, our list manager back then, used to leave Matt Price's "Way to Go: Sadness, Euphoria and the Fremantle Dockers" with potential draftees if we interviewed them twice. But the thing is, he had slipped in a $100 note at the start of the last chapter.

The night before the draft he would ask them how they're feeling and if they read the book. Most picks found the cash after flicking through the book. A particular douche when told about the money lied. Now this is where it gets interesting. One player found the $100 and posted it back to LLOYD with a note saying he wants it back with interest when he wins a premiership for Fremantle.

And that players name..... Will Brodie. (pick 9 2016 Fremantle fan)

Earlier in the year Will Brodie did a Q and A on the fremantle subreddit. Have a look:

Hats off to wifechip for being a great sport about it.

Brad Scott in the media talking about pick purchasing - I have to admit I really like the idea. Would stop North offering guys like Griffen Logue 800k just because they gotta pay someone.

Are we being conditioned for a new skipper announcement?

I wouldn't think so. Serong is doing what he should be doing as wone of the group leaders.
Pearce is not due back on the track until later.
Son Son has been doing a leadership role this early as well.
You are seeing things that aren't there.

I reckon you're onto something.

Serong is genuine captain material. Moose can do it, he's just a bit too complex and it doesn't come naturally. Serong is like a cat who just killed the trickiest mouse ever. That's him. He's just into padding around, being good at shit and somehow not being annoying while doing it.

I will always love the time he bounced up to Bubba Darcy, who was standing the mark after giving away a free kick, whacked the big lug on the arm, told him to get down the line to mark, and took his place. It was like mum said if Darce didn't hurry, he wouldn't get dessert.

Serong as captain over Pearce is as obvious a move as there has ever been at freo.
Pearce is just a run of the mill player and Serong is on track to be a Joel Selwood type.
Should be the easiest decision freo ever make. Pearce is a lame duck captain and if he’s gonna be replaced next year anyway - why wait? Do it now. Make the call and let our long term captain lead this club for the next decade.

Brayshaw & Serong would be one of the few exceptions for Co-Captains.
They seem to be different types of leaders.

Serong will give you a whack, Bae can then wrap his arms around you and discuss ways to not get whacked again.

Yeah I normally don't like co-captains, but far out do they seem a perfect fit as co-captains. I'm all for it.
