Chiefs survive Raiders' final drive on a clunky fumble

With 15-seconds remaining in the 4Q and the Raiders driving for a game winning FG, center Jackson Powers-Johnson inexplicably snapped the ball before QB Aidan O'Connell was ready for it and before the offense had completely set. While the ball was loose, both DJ Jerod Phillips and LJ Brian Perry threw flags. As KC recovered the loose ball, Perry ran in, signaling to "kill the clock" and giving a preliminary false start penalty. After a lengthy discussion, referee Clay Martin announced a penalty for an illegal shift, which is a live ball foul, allowing the Chiefs to decline it and take over possession and run out the clock.

The confusion on this game deciding play came from the fact that in the NFL, any illegal shift inside the final two minutes converts to a false start, but ONLY if the clock in running. Because the clock was stopped on this play, the illegal shift wouldn't convert to a false start and remained a live ball foul. Also, even though Perry was coming in, killing the clock, it does not appear he actually blew his whistle until after the Chiefs recovered the ball and even if he blew his whistle before that recovery, by rule, the Chiefs could still recover the ball and keep possession. In the end, the crew properly called this play correctly, even though it was clunky and confused all parties involved.

Cool story but the official was blowing the play dead, his very action disrupted everything that happens after that.

What's to say a Raiders player didn't stop right there and not try and recover the fumble? Because, you know, player safety.

Yet another interpretation that could have been more sensibly determined but instead provides one team maximum benefit.

How about the Raiders display the barest minimum of competence.

No doubt, but has nothing to do with the official's incompetence.

Bit like Mahomes going off at officials last year when he should have been hammering his wr for lining up offside.

How about your team does? You were in position to lose to the ****ing Raiders.

Problem is they don't have to because they have the zebra joker card in their pocket.

The Eagles have only had their opponents called for 53 penalties this year, second lowest in the league. We have a -21 penalty differential, totalling a difference of -194 yards. And it's not just on the eye test. Week after week we keep seeing questionable PI call after questionable PI call moving teams into scoring range keeping our games closer. Jalen Carter gets mugged every snap, never a call. We had the referees literally fail to overturn a downed by contact fumble caused by the ground gifting the other team a touchdown to make a game that we were blowing out a one score game. Despite that we're 10-2.

For comparison, the Chiefs have had 79 favourable calls, for plus 11, for positive 64 yards. They constantly get favourable calls at the death of games they're limping through. They've been carried to 11-1.

Just play better guys.

New ref uniforms dropped
Reminded me of a Jets fan who had this as the thumbnail of their video after the refs made sure the Chiefs got the win last year.. :tearsofjoy:

Absolute nonsense.

The ref has run onto the field of play.

Players should play to the whistle, but the flag and call made the play dead. It’s gaslighting bullshit to suggest otherwise.

Ask yourself if the teams were reversed in that play who would have ended up with the ball? Paddy would have. So everyone knows it is BS.

However, it was a good result for us anyway.

All this talk about the Chiefs and how lucky they are to be where they are is irrelevant as they won't be winning the Superbowl in Las Vegas anyway. Sooner or later their luck will run out, and they will be yet another team that failed to win 3 straight Lombardi trophies. History shows it every year - you qualify for the playoffs winning a bunch of one score games and it is usually one and done in the playoffs. It is hard to write off a team with Mahomes at QB and Andy Reid as HC, but they have 5 weeks to quieten the doubters and look like a genuine championship contender.

Right now, one team is looking like a juggernaut, and has to be favorites to win it all. Sorry Detroit but it isn't you. It's the team from eastern Pennsylvania - the Philadelphia Eagles. They are dominating both sides of the ball, dominating in the trenches, and crushing all in their path - good teams and bad.

The battle of Pennsylvania in 2 weeks is going to be very tasty - Steelers at Eagles could be a sneaky chance at being a preview of the Superbowl, although right now the Bills are most likely to represent the AFC against Philadelphia - that would be fun too.
