The ALW GF of only 7,671 at AAMI Park is just pathetic and proves once again the the Matilda's success has not had a positive bearing on local ALW crowds that overall remain very low.

The only Women's Football comp in Australia to get half decent crowds is still the AFLW.

What's pathetic about it? That crowd figure doesn't seem to be a gross misrepresentation of domestic soccer's popularity in Melbourne.

The word "pathetic" would be more aptly applied to the AFL's decision to schedule an AFLW GF in Melbourne at a 12.5k-capacity venue.

It is the 2nd highest crowd for a grand final for womens soccer.

The best was last year. I mean, your words doesnt much the stats.

I won't lie, It would have been good to match the average men's crowd for Melbourne City against Sydney FC (which is 8.3K)

But it did beat the last match they played against each other this year (5.1K).

The Hungry Jack’s National Basketball League (NBL) will be accessible to more sports fans after the League extended its partnership with ESPN, secured a new free-to-air broadcast deal with Network 10, with games to be played on its main channel, in High Definition (HD) and renewed its deal with News Corp Australia (NCA) to deliver deeper basketball coverage throughout the 2024/25 season.

ESPN is widely regarded as the home of the NBL and basketball and remains the only place to watch every game including finals, live. ESPN will also continue to provide strong coverage for fans with weekly news and shows, including on digital channels.

ESPN’s NBL programming will also be available via Foxtel, Kayo Sports and Fetch TV.

In fact, the Mariners' crowds contributed to what ended up being a record-breaking season in terms of attendance in the ALW, with the regular season plus finals series seeing over 300,000 people pass through the gates. That number made it the highest-attended women's sports league in Australian history, surpassing the Super Netball and AFLW, with over double the cumulative crowds of last season.

Clubs on the brink
Despite these improvements, though, the A-League Women still fell short in a number of ways.

By season's end, two of the competition's foundation clubs, Newcastle Jets and Canberra United, were teetering on the edge of collapse after struggling with their own respective financial issues off the field.

While Newcastle have managed to secure a new owner and Canberra were temporarily spared by a government donation, these clubs' financial frailties have highlighted the precarious nature of professional club football in Australia and drawn into question the ongoing sustainability of the competitions that they're part of.

The Tigers kicked off the days play against Newcastle in Tamworth where 10,107 saw them take on Newcastle. This is just under what the match recieved last year (10,423) but ahead of the average for the venue which currently sits at 8,724. The Tigers themselves average 15,147 for the year.

At Jubilee Stadium, 7,517 turned out to see the Dragons play the Rabbitohs. The Dragons currently average 17,921 for the season, and 9,777 at Jubilee Stadium.

Finishing off the day, the Storm took on the Sharks in front of 18,670 folks at Aami Park. Melbourne home crowds average 20,446 this season.

Daily Telegraph reporting that a relocated North Sydney Bears to Perth to be called the Perth Bears by 2030 is the preferred option for the NRL's 19th team.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports that Perth might prefer to go it alone, saying that the traditions of the Bears and Jets have no relevance to Perth, and holding some of their matches in NSW to preserve their traditions might not be viewed with great sympathy by the Perth side of the operation.

Haha I doubt Perth people would particularly care less whether it's Perth Bears or something else. We don't have any particular hatred towards Sydney.
I would have thought a team here with a built in (albeit small) fan base in Sydney would be a good thing, cos I reckon it's going to take them a generation to build something significant over here.

Perth Reds seemed to have a decent following from pretty soon after they were established.

There was an initial novelty factor, but that died off after a year or so. Perth has a pretty big event goer population and you might get them to a game early, but they aren't going to be rocking up week to week once the initial hype dies down. Have a look of the state of the Glory or Western Force now. Both get 5 or 6000 a game, and both sports are much more popular.

People underestimate how small rugby league is over here. Playing numbers are literally in the hundreds, last I checked there is something like a dozen adult mens teams in the whole city. The rewards are there if the NRL are prepared to guts it out, but they need to make a decades-long commitment. If it all gets too hard 3 or 4 years in they have to stick with it.

There's a fair point there if the Bears connection means a full slate of home games aren't played in Perth because some are moved to North Sydney Oval. I think the Suns and Giants having multiple games moved out of their primary markets has hamstrung their efforts to build a fanbase.

The solution is for the NRL to pay a couple of Sydney teams to move their home games against the Bears to NSO.
