Training 2024 Preseason Training Thread

They have run one for the last four Saturdays. Full three quarters of match sim with a few VFL players involved and three umpires provided.:)
I'm aware they've been doing match simulation on Saturdays where it is more adaptive and they score adjust to see how they react to different situations. I've been to most of them. I was more meaning the under full match conditions style thing that they have done in past years.

Bit of perspective on Tsatas .
Martin has kicked three straight to the opposition.
Parish two.
Merrett two.

Really good follow up work from Bryan at centre bounce making a few tackles in the secondary contest .

Red side struggling to stop the black team on transition .

Players a bit rusty on the stand and protected zone rules . Few fifties given away .

Jayden Davey playing back for red . Getting some of the footy.

Harry Jones . Work rate good but not a lot of footy . Has covered at CHB a couples of times.

Wied down by a lot of leads but not many possessions.
Soz, do you mean Parish and Merrett have also kicked two each straight to the oppo?

Some football related stuff.

This was the first 4 quarter sim with limited training drills before hand . Previously we have had 90 minutes of drills and running into 3 20-25 minute quarters of full match sim. This week it was 20 or so minutes of drills followed by 4 x 25 minutes of match sim.

Liked the fact that we where using the bigger bodies of Setterfield / Perkins / Durham to focus on being in front of their opponent and hold front spot. Hobbs was doing the same on Merrett. There where not many easy clearance break outs from the center.

Also there was more turn inside and play on from both sides to get the ball moving from half back. Players where set up to move the footy.

They have still been fully umpired match sim under match conditions regardless of what score changes are put up. Same as today when they played four quarters. There is no old school intra club keep scores . At no stage in the past 4 weeks of match sim have we stopped play and reset scenarios. That has been in mid week drills. They have been games that have been left flow same as intra club.

Bit of a player review for the last 5 weeks based on what I have seen.

McGrath. Not doing anything wrong. Seems to be ticking over okay. Not dominant but has had some good quarters.

Draper. Has been restricted to running so far with the agility work stepped up in the last 2 weeks and some training drills. No match sim.

Parish has been Parish. Looks fit. Finds the footy in match sim.

Langford also pretty strong so far. Playing forward. Today he was dropping back of the wing as the loose in defense for the last 5 minutes of each quarter.

Tsatas. Has had a lot of eyes on him and the main thing is he is ticking off the weeks and putting in some solid work in match sim. Has been mainly wing. Still working on the full speed kicking issues but in general 70 odd percent of his kicks are fine. It is just the bad is , well , very bad.

Caldwell. Been under the radar a bit. Playing a lot of small forward with some midfield time. Tracking well.

Merrett is having a very strong pre season so far. Look hard fit and very strong. Covering a lot of ground.

Hobbs. Was going very well until today. Looks to have hurt his shoulder but not sure how bad.

Shiel. Like Draper slow build up with only running and agility so far. No ball drills yet that I have seen.

Weideman. Only joined in full training a couple of weeks ago and has struggled a bit getting on the pace.

Gresham. Very solid form forward and in the middle.

Setterfield. Strong midfield form across both sides.

Cox. Has been okay as we have gone along but missed todays sim. Looked okay in the running and kicking he was doing.

Ridley. Still mainly running and some kicking drills. Not back in full match sim yet.

Laverde. Looking pretty good.

Perkins . Getting some good midfield minutes across both sides and has had some good moments.

Goldstein. Looking good. No issues here.

Hayes. Continues to build. Looks a bit stronger and has done some good stuff.

Hind. Has played mainly half forward and has some really good form.

Wright. Not dominating everything but has been the main KPF. Has done some second ruck work.

Heppell. Has been ticking along. No issues. Looks really fit.

Durham. Think he may have improved. Showing some good midfield form.

Jones. No issues with him getting through all the training but there has been limited output in some of the sim. At least he is 100% fit right now.

Bryan. Think he has taken a step up. Competing well against Goldy and took a couple of good marks forward for the black team in the last quarter today.

Stringer. Looks to be on song. Doing a lot of midfield stuff.

Baldwin. Been in good form as the red FB. Only had one game where he struggled against Wright.

Redman. Looks as good as ever.

Duursma. Took a couple of weeks to get going once he joined full training but has been in strong form the last two weeks.

Kelly. Good pre season. Playing mainly wing and has been good.

Caddy. Has had ups and downs but goes at 100% all the time. Second and third efforts good.

More to come. Lunch is ready :)

Part 2.

Reid. Obviously his best pre season so far. Looking good.

McKay. All systems go. Fit and ready and form has been good.

A Davey. Has got through all the training. Has not been a stand out but it has been a solid pre season.

Lual. Looked to be having a struggle to find where he fitted in but he has shown signs of improvement . Probably his best game today.

Guelfi. Has been okay so far but he has not been a stand out.

J Davey. Finally did a half of match sim today playing half back.

Martin. Has been burning up the track at half back.

Roberts. Bit quiet until last week where he did some really good things. Not quite as good today but it has been a good pre season for him.

Visentini. Has got through all the work. Is a project but he shows he has something to work with. Has had a decent amount of forward time.

Wanganeen. Has not started full running yet.

Menzie. Another who is having a big pre season. Been consistently good in all of the sim.

Hunter. Sadly done for the season.

I will say that I would like to see Reid matched up on Wright to see exactly where he is at. Has done everything right so far but I would like to see a half on our best forward.

Hoping for a good run in the middle from Duz today and Tsatas hitting targets. And Martin architecting.
2.5 out of 3. Tsatas had a couple of poor kicks but generally was good. Duz looking very good. Marto doing Marto stuff all game.

One more point. Martin kicked a goal and set a few up today from half back. What worked really well was when he was on the same side flank as Kelly on his wing Kelly was very effective in what you would call cover defense in behind Marto when he was racing up the ground. Kelly was still pretty busy but it allowed Marto a lot of freedom.

Theis seems to explain the Kelly on wing preference. Makes sense.

Yep, me too. Would give us a really good idea as to how Reid is tracking.

was there any times Duz was on the wing with him? If he could apply himself like Kelly hed be an upgrade.

Duz was doing really well playing midfield.

Seems like a good chunk of the list is healthy for the first time in what seems like forever. I wonder what has changed? Better approach to rehab?
Better approach all round. Players preparing and rehabbing better after training. Methodical approach to injury recovery and more fine tuned programs for individual players plus more staff.
