I'd push Cerra out to a wing and play Hewitt.

Might not be Cerras ideal position but think we are stronger across the park.
Also a very good option, but also might make us more one paced at stoppages

Next week's response will be intriguing, as every side in our situation has a little form slump throughout the year

Cats, Pies, Dockers, even the Swans over the last month have come off a touch

You have to grind out wins when you hit those periods

Cottrell should definitely take the wing spot instead of Ollie. At the moment Ollie isn’t accumulating enough ball to help in transition and he gets brushed aside trying to tackle far too easily. He fumbles and hesitates with ball in hand and gets run down too. What good is running defensively if you can’t stick a tackle. He’s a good prospect but some time in the reserves and the weight room is what he needs.

Cottrell averages less tackles than Hollands. Also less possessions, less contested ball and has ONCE in his entire career got over 20 possessions 🤷

Cottrell has proven his worth over the last 1-2 years imo. The coaching staff think the same if they have brought him straight back in after a long-term injury

I've got him in the 23 as well. Is it ok if i say i dont think he is one of the players out of that 23 that is deciding our fate. I think that falls to the performance of Walsh, Cripps, Mckay, TDK, Cerra, Acres, Weitering and Saad. Hewett, E Hollands, Williams, Mcgovern and Newman seem next placed. The rest playing their role and supporting the first two groups.

I dont mind if you have Cottrell in the first group. Everyone to their own.

The O Hollands wing has become a conundrum. He’s out of form and not offering much beyond his running ability. Will be a good player for us long term but in the here and now he’s become a weak link on the side.

The question is who can replace him. The wing is a highly specialised role especially for us where a large part of the brief is being a defensive winger to allow our midfield to attack.

Doc would be the one to do this role if fit but he’s not unfortunately.

Binns isn’t there yet. Needs to put on size to stand up in the contest. Kicking still needs work. He’s a prospect but he’s not ready now.

Cottrell is an interesting one. Club sees him as a high half forward given he trained there all pre season. He can get lost on the wing but does have the tank and discipline to fulfil the role. Maybe we go back here but when he was fit earlier in the year we didn’t make the move.

Then we get to more speculative options like Kemp who have never played this role for us. Not sure Kemp can run all day and I still prefer him to Marchbank in defence despite his poor game yesterday.

The upshot is I’m not sure we have any great options with Doc out. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Ollie stay in despite his form which is a worry.
Walsh to wing. Hewett to middle.

The club could build around this that Cripps, Cerra, Hewett and Kennedy could all go all out for hard ball gets and Saad, Walsh, Acres steam in for handball receives. The high half fwds cover the opponents wings.

Something like that anyway. Solves a few problems.

IMO Cottrell is fighting with Fogarty Owies Fantasia Cuningham Durdin and Motlop for a role.

Elijah for me is now a lock. Probably Fogarty as well

Form, effort, injury and how they combine will decide who plays come finals

Walsh would be a star as a wing. Issue is we need him in the middle with Cerra

Wing now is such a specialist role and an issue for us. Acres is staring and Ollie is struggling and a replacement isn’t obvious

Kemp has a great engine and is smart. Good mark as well which helps as an outlet. He could play like Acres or a Mason Wood. Look at Harrison Jones at Bombers now staring on a wing. I still don’t believe he’s a natural defender and would thrive. Can push forward as well

Won’t happen but I would bring in Marchbank to defence and play Kemp on a wing. Could really elevate us

I'd play Cottrell on a wing, not going to be brushed aside like Ollie

Ollie does get brushed aside far too easily. Not the most physically imposing player, don't know if he will bulk up much or is just genetically thin, having said that his brother is 14kg heavier. Have been many sinewy Michael Tuck types over the years.

Ollie will be fine in time, but at this stage he is struggling just to break even in many games

Hope everyone planning on going Saturday has gotten their tickets already View attachment 2042256

The ticketmaster situation is disgusting. "In demand tickets" is straight up scalping.

I was going to go.. but not doing General Admission and there's no good seats available.

The game should be at the MCG. Probably would have got 15k more there too.

Far out, didn’t think this was a game I needed to plan a week out from.

As much as I like Marvel I think it’s plain to see that the AFL aren’t maximising attendances to the games we play in🤬

Sent from my iPhone using BigFooty.com

We are too big for Marvel. We got 40k against the Gold Coast Suns in the 1pm Saturday timeslot.

We need to be permanent MCG tenants from next year on. Move one of the minnow clubs (i.e. Melbourne) to Marvel.

Scores from turnover differential in 2024:
+16.3 (#2 in AFL)

We are #2 for scoring from turnover and have conceded the least number of points from turnover.

Scores from stoppage differential in 2024
-1.6 (#11 in AFL)

We are #2 for scoring from stoppage but have conceded the 2nd most number of points from stoppage.

Dogs are the number 1 side for scoring from stoppage so defending this and not allowing clean exits from stoppage needs to be a focus this week. Could mean a Hewett return with his strong defensive focus...

Just paid @$900 for three tickets up in the bleachers to go and see Pearl Jam later this year…

The same PJ who rallied against the machine all those years ago about the very same thing.

The evolution of corporatism in the modern world.

As long as us mugs continue to consume at any cost it’s the way it is.

Did you watch the magoos though Bubs. Was his career best game, I thought.

He was far more impressive than Marchy and some want him back this week.
Yes I did watch and agree he's looked much better in the last couple of games.
But it wasn't long ago at all we were hearing his teammates were apparently bewildered at some of his decisions etc.
(Unless I'm mixed up and that was in relation to the Irish lad?)

Anyway I don't think we're at the desperation stage of needing to play the project players because we lost to GWS

Agree
Has rarely shown anything at AFL level
Great at VFL sure but doesn’t bring it in the big league.
Seem to remember a crucial part of our winning run last year, was none other than D. Cuningham.

We have a slowish midfield and we have some small forwards who apply lots of pressure, but rarely kick goals.

Cuners improves both of these areas, also has played some run-with roles, selfless roles and done well.

Not sure why he is now seemingly our new whipping boy. For mine Davey still has some really good footy in him

and would not be surprised at all if he has a very strong finish to the season.
