Huh?

Sexton was our tallest defender. SOS generally took the best forward, Sexton the second forward, and Dean was third tall. Sexton played on Brownless in the GF. Hogg/Whitehead were our small defenders, McKay/Christou mid/running defenders.

Hogg probably best comparison for English/Boyd in that team. Definitely not Sexton.

Maybe I should have said Boyd is our best “small running back pocket” since Des English?

Jordan Boyd … what a pick up mid season rookie draft
A couple of more of similar quality this year would be nice

What a fantastic gutsy win with half the backline out. The third quarter pressure rating was through the roof . I thought every player played a part in beating a very good giants team. I absolutely love Carlton..

Actually if we did a role call pre season our best back 7 would be Weiters (couldn’t run after 1/2 time), Marchbank, Saad, McGovern, Williams (subbed off 1/2time), Newman (in game injury which dulled his output and Boyd.

Do that to any team and see the result.

Absolute credit to those who played under duress and those who stood up.

Brilliant performance. Kemp, moo, young and chugga take a bow.

Genuine star. Would like to see more consistency across a game but when he goes, boy does he go. And brings the team (and the crowd) with him. Rare quality.
If Lemmey comes on he could definitely rotate through the middle and rest in a pocket, think we’d see more consistency if he did that

I can recall he had a very dominant performance in a Richo role early in his career, he could do it even better now

I love how Charles goes about it, has that honesty and blue collar attitude (like his Brother) but has X factor rivalled by none

Cowan stays in the side imo. Smart and gutsy …will only get better with more game time in seniors.
This is the great position that we are in, eventually, as players return from injury, some who are playing well will lose their places in the team.

A lazy Sunday morning watching the game again!
Just a few things from it;
1) Cowan's game was fantastic, especially in the first half. In and under in hard contests and had some really important passages of play.
2) Pittonet makes us a better side, if we manage the balance properly. His tap work was fantastic and it looks like he has added to his link up game. Took some great marks.
He was thrown to the ground at least twice with no free kick after having had two arms around his neck, and was penalised for in the back after he received a 2 handed shove.
Just showed that they had no answer for him.
3) Our ball use into the forward 50 was better but we still fluffed a few chances. Pittonet played a big hand in the improvement.
4) I think we still get hurt on turnover too easily. GWS went coast to coast several times.
Hopefully the return of Cerra and Cuningham will help there for a bit of speed/smarts.
I'd love to see Wilson given a chance at some point during the year.
I think his speed and long kicking added to our clearances would give opposition defenders a nightmare or three.

Some combined Pitto + TDK stats comparing last week with this week.

Disposals: 20 -> 32
Marks: 1 -> 8
Scores: 1.0 -> 3.1
Time on Ground: 125% -> 148%
Frees Against: 8 -> 1

Obviously this doesn't capture the broader impact on the midfield of having both players play well.

Last week showed that the two ruck setup can let us down. This week showed that it can also go very right. The next question is: which will happen more often?

The smallest of shoutouts to Fantasia. It may seem odd I know given his output is so low. BUT at a time where we are so badly impacted by injuries to have a guy come in and do the one thing you’d hope is terrific.

He doesn’t do demoralising things. He doesn’t kill momentum. That’s what guys 30-35 in your list usually do.

He also applies decent pressure, closes down space etc. clearly just a role player while we have so many out but I am actually happy with what he is doing. I am glad he is on the list.
Agreed, pretty much ditto Young

Each player brings a different dimension to the various roles/positions. It’s good to give vfl players a taste to see what they can offer.
I agree that you give them a taste if and when an opportunity to do so arises.

That is where we are at the moment, due to injury these types of players get a chance to show their wares. But that isn't the discussion I was having. I was more focused on the fact that even if some of these players who come into the team acquitted themselves well, most will be back in the reserves once others return.

It's a good position to be in.

It would depend on a lot of factors…for example the opponents style of play and their strengths/weaknesses etc etc as well as our set up and the mindset of our players going into the game.

Take last weeks game against crows as an example…

If our mindset was more like last night we would have crushed them to smithereens…..with or without Pitto for example.

The other thing with Fanta is zero repeat efforts....so perhaps fitness too

Fantasia did have 17 pressure acts so 4th behind Cottrell with 23, Acres 20 and Cripps 19.

He did have zero tackles - one of 9 of our players who had either zero tackles or just one tackle.

So he was a part of us getting to 261 pressure rating in the 3rd - but he probably gets replaced when others become available.

The difference this week though was that Pittonet and TDK were rotated a lot better.
TDK spent time forward with great effect and Pittonet was rested on the bench.
It was highlighted during the telecast but I can't remember the percentages.

How about the grin on Kelly’s face after his 3rd. Was so proud of himself.

It'd be interesting to add clearances to that, but the point is well made regardless. I think maybe we (here in BF) collectively went overboard on the "team balance" aspect, perhaps overlooking the simpler fact that both De Koning and Pittonet played poor games last week.

By the same token, it could be argued that their brilliance yesterday (I felt the need to get both of them into my votes!) is equally an outlier, and the week-to-week reality will lie somewhere in between.

So we are probably looking at different metrics for each player individually. For De Koning, it is about breaking even at stoppages, and getting to good positions in attack. For Pittonet, it's simpler: he needs to mark the football. Contested or uncontested, I don't really mind.

I think that we will see the two ruck set up more times than not.

It suits the way that we want to play and takes advantage of the skillsets of our players. We are suited to the clearance game, that is our strength. While we need to be balanced with the way that we play, I'm a strong believer in playing to your strengths.

I think that Pittonet playing in the number 1 ruck role suits us best, TDK must become more proficient in his forward craft to get the maximum advantage from having them both in the team.

Agree, but having a five goal buffer did help.

We still coughed up three of the last four goals but the game was already iced.

GWS were running/gunning - they’re the best in the comp at it.

Not sure we “coughed” anything up.

I thought we held up brilliantly against the (tsunami) tide.

SOS was (and is) taller than Michael Sexton.
