Don’t think many here are arguing he isn’t first man up.
I’m certainly not.
I had him as a certainty to be shifted to rookie list.
But it appears that we rate rookie list spots far more highly than senior spots if we can help it (because of SSP). Since we don’t appear to want to waste 40+ picks on senior/rookie spots in favour of SSP…it’s an intriguing watch for mine.

He’s got to be the most least commented on player we’ve drafted in 10+ years doesn’t he?

Just trying to throw a positive out there for someone no one rates.
He’s got a lot of players in front of him for a similar role (both fwd and back)….so it’s stacked against him that’s for sure.

Looking forward to seeing his first 5 or so VFL games. That will say a lot.

Do SSP players added to a senior list get a mandated 1 or 2 year contract as a minimum?

Kudos to Reef…but I’m actually a little more Excited by Allan in this passage.

Reef had serious momentum on him. That’s absolutely done in anyone’s game! If that tackle isn’t made, it says more than if it is.

But Allan still managed to absolutely take off. That tackle would have happened 2-3 steps earlier for anyone else. That’s exciting!!

that’s a standard tackle we “Expect” from our fwds these days. Especially with the way we train and our expectations of players.

Awesome camera work btw!!!!
Ah, the camera work is the clubs, not mine. Mine was on the other side of the ground.

Not as great, but here.

Its up to the club, I think. Generally its 1 prob since its.a rookie, but we gave oscar 2 years this time last year. So there is no set term.

1 year. They are rookies.
So it’s absolutely astute use of list positions.
Taking 20+ with a month of training as opposed to sight unseen 18 year olds in the rookie draft.
Immediate impact versus project. Much better use of resources.

Didn’t know we could give 2. Assume that is the max given they are rookies?!?

As I said….much better use of resources either way

I think the player nominates the contract length before being picked. Or that was dream I had.
That’s certainly true for MSD. But I would expect SSP to obey rookie rules (which is 1 year unless the club chooses to sign for longer).
SSP can’t name their price.
Don’t think the AFL expected it to be used as much as it is. Watch the changes come next year!!
(Mostly because North Melb didn’t capitalise on it and Laura is all
About North!!!!)

Edit: just on MSD… rules were chamged after hawks told newcome to nominate 4 years. So now MSD is max 2 (or 18 months, not sure).

Yeah, I didn't realise either until it was mentioned in an article halfway through last year, that we gave Oscar 2 years at the start of last year. Maybe that was to ward St Kilda off at the time, who too tried to pouch him from us.
Or maybe we just rated him that highly.

It sounds like Eyre and Bytel are most likely. And that makes sense given our premiership window is open.

The other mature body who’s been mentioned is the VFL listed Ned Long.

Do anyone have any further information?
Could he be in line for the third slot open on our list?

Other than needing to put McStay on the Long Term Injury list, I don't see any reason why we couldn't sign Ned as a Rookie (or any of the other SSP trialists.

If anyone gets a chance on a sunny Mon/Wed/Fri, I highly recommend a trip down to training
So much going on - drills everywhere and they are so specific and relevant - players invest in them
TJ absent today - he’s about the only one on the list I reckon isn’t quite ready for 1s if need arises - I’d even like Steene to get one game if possible so he can get a taste of the speed of AFL
Non of this guarantees success but it does provide the opportunity for it

Ryan did a lot of ability work on boundry
- would love to see him really take the game on this year with run and carry
Wil did a lot of running and agility
Jaicos a lot of running

Beau and Shooter will punish some backs with hits and tackles this year
Reef might end up our FF or play a pseudo Checkers role
AJ will lead up and mark as is his game

Once Eyre is on the list I think he’ll get even better w the confidence and belonging that that provides

And I can’t post without mentioning Allan - unleash him

Edit:
Two things I think the club can do
  • provide a coffee / food van over the off season training. So many people down here that would use it / club would make money - win / win
  • on repeat but we need more cover all around the ground. Anywhere.

Long was only training with the team as a VFL top up, not an official SSP.

I posted some stuff on Long in either the trade thread or the preseason thread. He was with Hawthorn for 2 years and was a rookie selection. He had some good VFL games but was delisted end of 2023. Same draft as Nick. He is a big Cripps sized mid with average skills, average pace, poor agility, very good endurance, excellent tackler and a solid goal kicker.

Played 5 AFL games 2 as sub.
Best VFL game was 38 touches, 12 clearances, 12 tackles and 3 goals. He is very raw imo.
