You can add Ryan Exon to those 5.
Didn't have a huge output in 2023 however a player with VFL premiership experience and a former captain with 100 games is a loss...to a degree.

According to Paul Amy via twitter he has retired from VFL football
A club that needs leadership loses leadership. Definitely a shame!

Probably callous of me to say it, but at least it stops people talking about Frankston's demise.

As a side note, I got gifted this awesome book on the VFA for Christmas which I don't think I posted here.
You too

The one on vfl.com.au is fairly recent, or else I can shoot you club specific ones that I have on hand, but I'm still slowly working through the clubs myself.
The latest one I have seen is the one in December on the AFL.com site,is that the most recent?

All against stand alones
Is it just me that thinks this is an awful, awful idea? You now play 2/3 of those teams three times across the season. Surely you would want to do practice matches against AFL-aligned teams to see where you sit? not the ****in Northern Bullants.

Agreed.
And playing against the AFL-aligned teams theres a feint possibility their club supporters will get there to watch. Meaning more potentially spent by them at the canteen/bar.

Also exposes their players to better opposition, I hate the rigged draw to hide the stand alone issues, dealing with the symptoms with this strategy.

Lets face it, unless you're an AFL aligned or reserves side, there is nothing fair about being in the current VFL competition as we know it. Regardless of the amount of resources you boast.

I would have preferred we play against at least one of the better reserves teams. Port and Williamstown will still provide good opposition but I see little benefit in playing the Bullants unless it's for getting some match experience into the academy players.

It is true that the VFL is just inherently unbalanced, and I think it's gotten worse over the past decade or so. I think it was more manageable in the early years when the AFL had only just become fully professional in terms of wages, but not so much culture (e.g. Fevola smashing a Maccas feed before the Millenium match.) Now that AFL clubs have moved toward being truly elite sporting enviroments, the divide between them and the standalone clubs has grown. I'd love to know what Port, Williamstown, and Werribee do to get the quality of players that we miss out on (possibly a mix of geography, competing with a strong local comp, and our own history of mediocrity and instability that works against us.)

I don't think there is a good solution as long as this hybrid league remains. Yes, the tweaked draw only adresses the symptom rather than the underlying issue. But the underlying issue is that part-time football programs can't realistically compete against elite level clubs who are regularly fielding professionals in their reserves teams. Perhaps I should be grateful we've been able to field reasonably competitive teams these past few years.
