Something to watch the next week.
Will be interesting to see where everyone goes.

Because all the NGA’s are now allowed to be picked anywhere in the draft as opposed to just the northern academies.
It will be worse for availability but should be much better for the value of picks.

Haven't crunched any numbers, but it could be a situation where a pick in the 20s doesn't move much even with 3-4 bids before it because of how many points are required to match. This is especially the case if top 5 players are bid on I suspect. In a draft with two top 5 bids and nothing else inside 20 could see picks in the late first and early second round come in.

So, thinking about our greatest list need (after small forward) in the context of our recent delistings, surely we are in the market for another tall forward at pick 30? But not just any tall forward, I’m thinking a hulking, stay-at-home, clunk everything type. Probably 198/199cm who is 90% forward 10% ruck.

There should be some really good options around pick 30 (Gerreyn from West Perth comes to mind that meets all of your requirements at around that pick) but it seems clear that we are sticking with Odin Jones who is also that kind of player, whilst also doing some balancing of the list.

I agree with you, but a future 1st from Brisbane might end up pick 30. Future 1st from next year are less valuable.

I don’t see the point in bringing in Gerryn if you are looking at list needs, at all.
Clearly they think Jones is worth another year so where would he even play the next couple of years? Peel reserves?

We need a decent half back flanker and a good quality small forward. Would be thrilled with that with the first 2 picks. A winger or outside mid would be fine too.

I’ll wait till next years draft when we see this in action before passing full judgement but I’m not convinced these changes go anywhere close to far enough.

Inexplicably there is still a 10% points discount (why goddamn it, AFL, just why??). Also the points value scale ends at pick 54 instead of pick 70 from next year

I would have preferred no discount at all (especially for FS players) and pick 40 being the last pick with a points value attached.

You will know it’s working properly if
  • teams are passing on matching bids because of the cost of the player available and the fact that he may not fill a list need.
  • teams like Brisbane with pick 18 this year are giving up a meaningful assets to get a player like Levi Ashcroft in the door. For example, a scenario where they are forced to trade away the likes of Jarrod Berry or Starcevich for a mid first rounder to generate the trade capital to help match the bid on Ashcroft.

When we see examples such as the above happening, I’ll accept this bidding process is somewhat fair and equitable to all clubs.

I've always been a Sturt fan as I'm sure you all know, but he actually surprised me by his contested marking last year.

Not something I thought he would offer, I thought he was mostly a lead-up type forward who can also crumb/kick goals on the run.

He's the true hybrid that can play both tall and small
