Correct - Freo announced just prior to the MSD that they would not be participating and that Kuek was making good recovery. A few weeks after this Kuek played his first game for East Perth Reserves (Peel had a bye).

I’d say this is a blue print for what they will do here. Have two players come and train over summer for an SSP spot. They can have two players (at a time) for every available spot. If none of the players impress then leave spot open for MSD or for Odin Jones to recover and play WAFL.

The two players that missed out gives us an indication of the positions of players we have in mind for draft. Max Beattie (small forward) and Sam Van Rooyen (tall forward). So I don’t think our draft plans change greatly except where we potentially land on our third ND pick. If we believe Carr is a good chance of going through the ND and RD undrafted then he could be one of the two we get down for SSP train-on.

Actually think it could change how we think about pick 30 (or pick 67 if no commitments have been made to Carr) to a small degree if anything. Might mean that we’re say 40% chance of drafting a KPF instead of 10%. I’m completely making those numbers but I think you can get the point.

I can’t see this changing how we approach adding Carr to our list tbh. If we’ve committed to him we’ll draft him. If not he was only ever an option for pick 67 anyway.

Commitments to Knobel and Narkle won’t change.

Agreed. Not a massive change but certainly a consideration.

As for Carr my understanding (which is worth bugger all really) is that we have made no promises but he is in the mix for our third selection and the F/S nomination is to give us that option to grab him in the event someone decides to bid on him before our pick.

I'd be super happy with Travaglia or Lindsay. I feel we could use some silk to go with our blue collar/wharfie grunt. A good kick would potentially get early game time on our wing or half back line, considering our overall lack of quality ball users.

To be clear I’m not saying the SSP to replace Jones is not an option. I’m just saying I don’t think we can make a decision on that by next week when the drafts are on.

It’s not fair on Jones to make him inactive then by Round 5/6 he’s ready to play limited minutes in the WAFL reserves but he can’t because he’s (temporarily) not on our list until we move someone else onto the inactive list.

Likewise I don’t think it’s fair on say Carr (???), Knobel or Narkle to change our plans for them because of this injury when we don’t, to my knowledge anyway, have a timeframe for this injury. The decision to upgrade Worner when we didn’t need to (but had committed to previously) for me shows we’re trying to stay true to any commitments made to our players and that would likely extend to players we’ve committed to but aren’t yet on our list.

If Jones is to be replaced via the SSP, I expect us to be inviting two players down to train with us between December and January. If there’s any chance Jones returns at any level in 2025 though I wouldn’t expect us to replace him.

We’re not finding ourselves an extra draft pick out of this. Any SSP train ons will be overlooked at the draft (maybe including delisted players).

Another option if we can invite 2 players per open spot as train ons is to invite 4 players. 2 for Narkles and 2 for Odins. Essentially that would allow us to have a good look at 3 players for Odins spot, whilst giving him 3 months to see how he is.

Also is there a case for us to be ruthless in our player management? Carr might have looked the goods mid year, but it sounds like he has been less than impressive in recent form. Same with Worner. Do nice teams finish last?

If we’ve committed to Narkle, and he would’ve nominated for the draft if we hadn’t, there’s zero chance of us not signing him within the first few days of SSP.

We won’t be using him to get an extra train on. It’s not worth it for Narkle because if he does a season ending injury in the SSP his career is over. He’d know that and doubt he makes any commitments with the club that leave that possibility open.
