first statement isnt entirely true.

Cook always insisted we played a few home games at the G because they are a great financial source for the club. in fact almost level with home games at GMHBA

things may have changed, but thats how i have always heard and seen it

FYI i am all for 10 and soon to 11 home games at HOME, just needed to say that home G games do bring in quite a bit of money

IF at any stage the MCG offered any financial benefit, it was before the redevelopment started at KP, because for the past decade it's definitely been no real financial benefit to playing home games at the venue

The club made a point of the financial hit when it comes to playing at the MCG in 2014 when we hosted Richmond at the MCG on a shit Sunday afternoon in May and had less than 35k in attendance - we took a big financial hit that day and the club made their concerns known

Following that match, the club was pretty clear that to break even financially with MCG games we needed approx 60k in attendance, and it's getting that 80k plus when the profit started matching KP home games - with KP Stage 5 redevelopment complete, those numbers would look worse for the MCG in terms of having the same financial benefit as a true home game

The following is from Brian Cook's testimony to the 2009 Senate committee transcript for the Establishment of an AFL team in Tassie - so these would be 2008 figures:

"...at Skilled Stadium when you have a capacity of 25,000, we make a net profit in that game of $638,000 per game, which is $26 per head. If we have a crowd of 85,500 at the MCG, which we did have against Collingwood in 2007, we brought home $771,000, which was $9 a head. Importantly, Telstra, now Etihad Stadium, with a near capacity of 46,000, we brought home $293,000, which is $6 a head."

If those figures are from 2008/2009 prior to the future stages of KP redevelopment where we've seen capacity grow to 30k, 35k & now approx 40k, it would suggest it's been a long time since MCG home games have gone close to having the financial benefit of KP home games

Edit - I didn't bold anything in that quote from Cook, it's how it was typed out when I found it. And for those curious, that info from Cook is available in different BF threads, including here:

Mcg games making us a financial gain has been shown to be a fallacy. Even the 90k games at the G offer less than a 30k game at KP

KP is the $ maker.

I'm curious how much of a hit our MCG takings take in our "home" matches against Hawthorn where the match has been designated an MCG replacement match for the home games they sell to Tassie
The replacement home game is a pass thru mechanism.

Hawks pay us the GA rate for every member that shows up. Whether they charge more on top to take some cream is up to them

This is a woeful deal for fans.

“Clubs are bracing for the commercial impact of delayed free-to-air AFL coverage on Saturdays from next year as Fox Footy holds exclusive live broadcast rights of the game nationally for the first eight rounds.

The deal means that supporters of teams playing anywhere in Australia on Saturday in the first eight rounds will need a Foxtel or Kayo subscription to watch them live, with free-to-air coverage on Seven to be delayed. Only the Anzac eve, Anzac Day and Dreamtime games will be shown live on free-to-air if they fall on a Saturday.
But for Victorian audiences, that arrangement lasts longer, and extends to the first 15 rounds before Seven can broadcast Saturday night games live. Seven has the rights to broadcast Thursday and Friday night matches, and Sunday afternoon games, and the overall number of free-to-air games broadcast will remain the same as they were under the previous agreement. Fox Footy will use dedicated commentary teams for each match.”

They have us bigfooty diehards by the balls but terrible business decision in the expansion markets to do that.

Even in Victoria with the casual market they have to be a little bit careful, Cricket Australia have killed international white ball cricket completely by putting those series behind a pay wall, which would have been unimaginable in the 90s.

And the rights of the elderly and non cash flushed tech ones to watch their favourites disappear further.

If that Adelaide round leak is accurate then we'll be the first team in AFL history to be forced to play 13 games away from home, yet there'll be more crying than ever about our unfair advantage because we finally managed to get 10 home games.
Very happy for the Hawks to partner up with another big club like the Blues for Easter Monday, then you can have all 11 home games in Geelong and stop whinging. With no MCG home games and average crowds of 30k, your fan base will soon enough shrink back to where it was decades ago when you used to all home games in Geelong.

The same Hawfs who have one foot out the door of Victoria selling their soul to Tassie all whilst having a smaller membership number than little old Geelong?

p.s. what happened to that Dingley Tip relocation? Has the EPA finally declared it safe for human use? :poo:

?

This past season was 23 games:
  • 9 games at KP
  • 14 games away from KP (2 x MCG home, 11 x away & 1 Gather round)

Which is the same split as 2023 when gather round was introduced

Go to the previous seasons of 22 games, and the split was:
  • 9 games at KP
  • 13 games away from KP (2 x MCG home & 11 x away)

Next season, regardless of who we play doing Gather round, the split will be:
  • 10 at KP
  • 13 away from KP (1 x MCG home, 11 x away & Gather round)

13 games away from our home ground isn't some new concept

Our Gather round clash is confirmed

Guessing it's going to be a 5 day break into Gather round, followed by an 11 day break into Easter Monday

My bet is everyone will play a SA team eventually …how they handle it once Tas comes in will be worth observing...

My only real issue is tickets as I was planning on making the trip over there in 2025. First game ..Thur night… against Crows…. one would think tickets will go quickly. Is there any reciprocal allocation to Non Crows ..like finals tickets …. to give others a chance to buy tickets… is the resounding truth is that its just another home game for Adelaide… and all the seats normally booked by Crows supporters will be taken by them.

I don't believe so. Think it's a separate game outside their 11 for season tickets.

Hawthorn may actually occasionally win on Easter Monday under that scenario, so I can see the appeal of a switch there for Hawthorn.
