Prediction 2025 - Best 23 + Emergencies - Rolling

With the chatter suggesting JSOS to CHB and Kemp as 3rd tall fwd next year, I’m keen to hear peoples thoughts on how that might look on paper, barring injuries of course.

How do we fit all of JSOS, McLovin and Haynes into our starting back 6 along with Weits? Is playing all 4 of them together going too tall? Mitch will most likely miss a couple with niggles (although he’s been relatively healthy these last couple of seasons)

Saad - Weit - Haynes
Newy - JSOS - McLovin Boyd/Cowan/Doc

Personally think McGovern with his speed can play small. If it was out of Cowan, Boyd and Mcgovern to take a non KPP tall, i'd still pick Mcgovern and allow him to bully which is what he too loves.

Haynes type is required because he actually understands the intercept role. I wouldn't use Haynes in any other capacity.

Weitering and Saad are self explanatory.

The hole is the key defender potatoe role (Payne, Petty, Collins type). We dont have one and young is an interceptor who happens to be tall. Despite the height difference, Young and Haynes should be competing for interceptor to suit their actual abilities. Having said that, young is deplorable aside from a free intercept mark so Haynes easily for me. I'm hoping like hell for Hawthorn's phillips/DGB/JSoS to fill this 'need'.

Newy v Doc maybe with no real preference. Might just slightly prefer Doc.

Cinc/cowan for the last spot. Boyd needs his best form and he is stuck as a role inbetweener based on his current traits.

FB: Cowan Weitering Newman
HB: McGovern Silvagni Saad
C: O Hollands Cripps Acres
HF: Fogarty Harry Smith
FF: C Durdin
Charlie Moir

Foll: TDK Walsh Hewett

IC: Cerra Docherty Kemp Boyd
Sub: E Hollands

Emerg D: Haynes Young Wilson S Durdin
Emerg M: Lord Cincotta Pitto Binns
Emerg F: Williams, Cottrell Motlop Fantasia

I don’t think any of the other guys are ready

I think Silvagni at KPD is what Insould like, he has effort and footy IQ
Fogarty as the defensive forward, manic pressure, beats Cottrell to that role
C Durdin when fit is our best small forward, beats Motlop for effort, Inness needs to keep him on ground
Moir is my wish for 3rd tall, Inness needs to get him fit and yes this is more a wish as Kemp probably has it over his so far.
Kemp gets the IC forward role over Williams but this could go either way or Cottrell. Gee one of these guys needs to step up
E Hollands looked good at times but not great, I picked Jagga Smith as pick 3 and sitting on the half forward line getting midfield minutes, could be FOS but I prefer Jagga. We need someone who accumulates.

Elijah was one of our best players all year. He'd be almost a certain locked in b23 next year, especially with a big pre season

I can see that - Elijah was good but like the rest of the midfield supporting cast for Cripps - he wasn’t great

This is probably indicated by not being Top 10 in our B&F

With Pick 3, Docherty returning, Lord and Muir developing, Fogarty and Durdin fit again (??) - Elijah I suspect won’t be able to rest on a good season

Really: A Best 22/23 Already???

B: Saad, Weitering, Newman
HB: Docherty, Kemp, FOS/Draper
C: Cowan, Cripps, Acres
HF: E.Hollands, Curnow, Fogarty
F: C.Durdin, McKay, Silvagni
R: TDK, Hewett, Walsh
IC: Cerra, Boyd, Williams, Cottrell
Sub: Lord

Notes:
  • Whether you give that last spot on the bench to Gov, O.Hollands or Cottrell comes down to one's own personal preference. All have their moments, but all have plenty of deficiencies as well.
  • I've put Kemp down back as I don't think one game where he kicked 4 goals persuades me he's a natural forward.
  • Cowan & Doc are interchangeable and I've started Pick 3 off a HBF until they're ready for midfield assignments.
  • McGovern will still get plenty of games due to injuries to others.
Players To Watch:
  • O'Keefe - Will be interested to see how he goes with another preseason under his belt. Put on a fair bit of condition last year and if he puts on a little more his progression will be worth watching. Not afraid of much and tough as old boots.
  • Moir - Needs an uninterrupted preseason to build up his endurance. Finishing is first class, but needs to up his running and defensive sides of his game.
  • Binns - Just needs to keep improving his game, especially his execution as his radar can waver off course at times. Patience is needed here as Josh Daicos took 4 years to become established in the Pies side.
Final Thoughts:
  • I'm glad Austin has finally bit the bullet on many of our injury-prone players and moved them on.
  • Curnow, Weitering & McKay are about to begin their 10 season in 2025 and we only have one capable KPD and no genuine replacements on our list. There's a part of me that wishes we'd kept 12 & 14.

I see Ollie (Cooper whoops) Lord as a sneaky chance to make the best 23.

Considering when given an opportunity he had an impact with limited minutes I see plenty of upside.

Assuming he didn't have an AFL tank as he was rushed into the system mid season. With a full preseason hmi have high hopes.

More interested in Cooper Lord Biggie🤪

Carlton and injuires seems like a bad couple.

B: McGovern, Weitering, Saad
HB: Newman, Cowan, O Holland's
C: Acres, Cerra, Walsh
HF: Williams, McKay, E Hollands
F: Moir, Curnow, Motlop
Fol: TDK, Cripps, Hewett
Int: Kemp, Lord, Docherty, Pick 3

Watching Ollie play across the back half plus Burgoyne, there is a place for those styled defenders.

I never want to see Hewett & Cripps is the same centre setup

Back 6 a bit small?

Not expecting massive changes from last season, as far as our preferred 23. A few returning from injury will stake their claims and we'll have to see how that pans out.

Factoring in the rumours doing the rounds on where we can expect a few position shifts:

Newman, Weitering, JSOS
McGovern, Haynes, Saad
Hollands, Walsh, Acres
De Koning, Cripps, Cerra
Hollands, Curnow, Fogarty
Williams, McKay, Kemp
I/C: Cowan, Docherty, Hewett, Cottrell/Motlop*
Sub: Moir

Hard to judge how that last bench spot would be decided, I'd need to see both guys in preseason to make a call - comfortable with the rest.

Of those who are unlucky to miss out, I see their depth path as follows:

Lord - first picked to replace Hewett or Cerra.
Cincotta - first picked to replace Newman or Cowan.
Boyd - first picked to replace Saad, maybe an option to replace Newman.
Durdin - alongside Motlop if he misses, waiting behind Williams and maybe Fogarty.
Pittonet - purely depth for TDK now, anyone else and we make other adjustments.
Young - gets a look in for Weiters if needed, 50/50 if he'd replace JSOS, Haynes or Gov or if we'd just play smaller.
Binns - an option for Acres/Hollands but we'd have other options with positional switches.
Fantasia - could see him getting a few sub vests so we can make sure the younger kids get regular full games at VFL level.

Pure development year for O'Keeffe, Wilson, Monahan, Duffy, Lemmey, the Campos and Pick 38.

Pick 3...who knows, depends who it is and how quick they find their feet. They'll play but I'm not sure they'll be a staple.

The one I find interesting is how we'd plan to cover an absence from Cripps? Is it just Hewett doing more gruntwork? Does Cincotta come in and play on-ball? Does Lord get a trial by fire at the coalface? Could Ben Campo step up early? Options, but I think they all bear some discussion.
