Could Opening Round look something like this?

Thursday night - Brisbane V Geelong
Friday night - Sydney v Collingwood
Saturday - Gold Coast V Essendon
Saturday night - GWS V Hawthorn

Carlton apparently don’t want to be involved because of the Thursday night round 1 game against Richmond.

Think the AFL have a "gentleman's agreement" with the VRC now, not to take any of the spotlight off them at this time of year.
Last day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival today, so hopefully the leaks will start from tomorrow.

Swap Collingwood and Essendon and it looks good for Opening Round

I really hate round 0.
Every club should start the season the same week.

it creates unnecessary unfairness in the opening months fixture.
the fixture is always going to have its unfairness to it the opening round is for the development of the north states it needs to stay the gather round is probably unfair Richmond playing Carlton round 1 especially at the moment is unfair Collingwood playing 15 games a season at the MCG is unfair

Exactly, the fixture is always going to be unequal and unfair so let’s create another round that adds to the inequity.
Can easily grow the game in the north in Round 1 with all teams starting equal.

I understand wanting to grow the game in the northern states and I think it’s great that the AFL are always looking to grow the game.
Does having an opening round with only half the competition playing and only playing in QLD and NSW actually grow the game anymore than a regular round?

Its not for that at all.

It was to try and jump in on the vacancy created by NRL opening their season in Vegas, but they committed to it too early.

I think 2025 will be the last season of it.

I really don't understand those who dislike opening round.

Let's think of what's good for the game and opening round is. 3 of the 4 games were sell outs last year

An undisputed benefit that doesnt necessarily require opening round is giving teams byes in the first 8 weeks of the season. This reduces the number of games per week to 7/8 which is perfect for minimising overlap games.

Perfect world, opening round would be 9 games, and every team would get a bye between rounds 2-9 (extended due to PH weekends not always having a bye) and another between rounds 19-23 (no pre finals bye after round 24).

Agree but for the other teams sitting out the first weekend of the season sucked massively.
Simple solution- it was a long weekend last year could still have opening round as the first four stand alone games in the north (Thurs/Friday/ Sat arvo/Sat eve) then fit the other games into the Sunday and Monday all on the same weekend.

Are the AFL still going to do the BS they did this year whereby they announce the full fixture but rounds 16 onward will not have the matchday times confirmed until like after round 11 or 12?
Very frustrating for shift workers like myself.

My NRL team the Storm didn't play on the first weekend of the NRL season last year when it was just the 2 games in Vegas. Didn't bother me.

Problem is labour day is only a public holiday in a couple of states

Sadly I think they will

Richmond's turn to be the home team so we don't want to start the season with two away games.

Still don't understand why the AFL don't fixture a round in NSW/ACT when the NRL have Magic Round in Brisbane.
Promotes the AFL big time in NSW/ACT & it's a free hit for them.
Anyhoo....hope we start to get some leaks as of today.
