We already play an 'away' game against North in WA, there is no way they will make them go twice to WA to play WC.

If they wanted to go full nuclear they could have organised away games against us and Freo at Optus on either side and gave them a three and a half week block in Perth and then never leave Melbourne for the rest of the year.

One thing I look at is the lead up teams get before flying to Perth compared to ours.


Rd1- GC 8 day break - Not relevant as don’t play Rd0. Arguably a disadvantage but jury is out.


RD3- Both WA teams 7 days but we are returning from Brissy. Dockers are back to back WA games. Disadvantaged

R6- Dons and Eagles same break after Gather Round. Even

RD8- Sat game - Melb Thus game 8 day break. Eagles Sunday. 6 days. Disadvantaged

RD10- Sunday game- Stk Friday game 8 day break - Eagles Sunday 7 day. Disadvantage

RD12- Sun game- Cats Thursday game 9 day break- Eagles Sunday 7 day break. Disadvantaged

RD13- (away WA game) North coming off the bye 15 day break- Eagles Sunday game 7 day break. Disadvantaged

RD14- Sunday game- both teams 7 day break but we stayed at home. advantage.

Would have liked at least one Saturday afternoon game to take my kid too.
Also have to wait until round 9 to play a team that finished near us on the ladder, could argue GC were near us but only due to %.
Just like last year we seem to have drawn a pretty tough start to the season. First 2 away games against the Premiers and a top 4 finisher.
Then you get the Premiers getting to play us and the wooden spooners either side of their round 3 bye???
Play 6 teams twice before we play 2 other teams even once in the last 2 rounds. Another quirk of the FIXture I guess.
Only 2 out of 6 double ups against top 8 finishers is good I guess, except have to travel to play 4 of the 6 remaining top 8 finishers.

Is what it is and we just have to get on with it.
Bring on round 1.

It’s Good Friday so hopefully none of us are working. It’s actually a pretty good time slot as the kids can get involved but still get home at a reasonable hour.

Only reason they are considered "marquee" games (ANZAC, night before ANZAC, Queens Bday, easter Monday, Round 1 etc) is that they are played stand alone, nationally live on 7, in a prime time slot.

We can try and make our games as Marquee as we like, but if they are constantly relegated to Sunday night on fox, they will continue to just be a footnote at the end of the footy weekend

Freo have been trying the Len Hall game for decades, ask any non-WA footy nuff what the Len Hall games is, they will have no idea

That's a really boring fixture from an entertainment point of view. A bunch of likely uncompetitive losses in bad times to start the season and the saturation of Sunday timeslots is really inflexible. Not to mention the bizarre fixture hijinks that see us play Carlton twice in first half of season and don't play Bulldogs and Swans until the last two rounds (almost 18 months since we played them in 2024).

Hard start for the new coach. We might be 0-5 by the time we play a team that will probably miss the 8 (Bombers).

Also, how did Bombers get cursed with always having to travel to Perth to play us?

Agreed and that’s why as a big club we have to say enough is enough. Time for some interstate sides get guaranteed in these slots even if they are crap. (Likely the Dees did, currently Richmond ect)

Why it works. Good Friday will always be….. well a Friday. That time slot of 4pm works in the west for families and east for TV slot.

The team Freo play every year on ANZAC weekend also changes every year and they can’t even get the AFL to leave it on actual ANZAC day. Issue being is those ‘traditional marquee games’ are always the same sides playing against each other on the same date of the calendar each year. We have one opponent we are guaranteed to play each year in Perth as it stands, Freo. Also not much else to do on Easter Friday besides watch footy.

Freos vs Crows on Easter Friday this year didn’t even get FTA national coverage due to the shitty North ‘marquee’ game.

Know but what about a Derby on Easter Friday every year tradition? WA day eve fits better but this is a great alternative as they seem to like the Derbies early in the season.

Not sure the AFL will buy it as it might take away from Norths ‘marquee’ slot.

It's a marquee game on a Friday night against an arch enemy on an extra long weekend!!
What's not to like??! I'm giddy just thinking about it, whether I go to the game or make a night of it with beers and a big screen!!

I think that's a lot more relaxed in the last few years. Plenty of places serving alcohol during the day at least.
