Well, some midpricers, some more expensive-rookie price mature-agers

Some in the price range are going to be very highly selected if fit:
  • McKercher (?) $476
  • Clarry (?) $451
  • Macrae $392
  • B. Smith $389 *
  • Mills $357 *
  • Phillipou $313
  • C. Daniel $269
  • K. Coleman $269 *

Others that might have a few admirers:
  • Parish $481 *
  • Rivers $462
  • J.Short $442
  • W. Ashcroft $441 *
  • Shai Bolton $416
  • Parker $343
  • Sanders (?) $339
  • Cumming $287
  • Matt Flynn $261
  • Dev Robertson (rookie priced) $121

No one mentioning:
  • K. McAuliffe $244
  • Sheed (not sure if fit) $238
  • Will Brodie (?) $191
  • Powell-Pepper (?) $180
  • N. Erasmus (rookie priced) $119

Anyone missing that you think should be on the list?
  • Bruhn (?) $393 *
  • Ginbey (?) $373
Any of the “obvious” picks that you’re thinking of leaving out and betting against?

* Has an early bye

Teams without an early bye:
Crows,
Blues,
North,
Port,
Dogs,
Saints,
Dockers,
Tigers,
Melbs,
Eagles

Cactus stands tallest
Scholar, gentleman refined
Midprice master calls

(If you're not big on your haikus, Scoops might have done himself a bit of a mischief here)

Ha . . .!

(Did you remember that I am an absolute haiku freak? Or just a coincidence?)

Haiku is how I amuse myself til SuperCoach opens each year 😁

Seemed to be a lot of talk about McKercher before SC opened but haven’t seen him in any of the teams posted so far

Edit: I’ve put him in my first draft but I’m not feeling confident about it - at his price he’d have to become a genuine premium to be considered a win

Further Edit: Did finish first in the 2km time trial for what that is worth

Phillipou is one who seems very popular who I’m considering leaving out

Heaps of hype as the saints have midfield spots they can’t find anyone to fill, and I think he won their 2km

But also:
  • has only played 36 games
  • has only scored 100+ twice
  • has a top score of 112
Doesn’t exactly scream “pick me”

I admit I haven’t seen much of him playing, but I guess he must pass the “eye test” and then some to have all this hype around him

And having just knocked Phillipou for only playing 36 games . . . I am wondering whether I can make the case for the more expensive Will Ashcroft who has only played 27 games

Ashcroft has a notched up 8x 100+ scores from his 27 games, has a high score of 148 . . . and played a passable game in the GF, so he definitely passes the eye-test

Completely my Richmond bias including Kane McAuliffe

The case for him:
  • only just price more than an expensive rookie at $244
  • was the sub several times last year which is the reason for a bunch of his low scores
  • I thought he passed the eye test when on field, found the ball well, contested possession, and seems to be a pretty good kick
  • Richmond mid field is . . . um . . . let’s say slow and prone to getting injured, that is a nice way of saying it

On the other hand:
  • Smillie may have already gone passed him
  • Lalor might too by the start of the season depending how quickly he recovers from injury
  • McAuliffe might be behind Ross for time in the centre (but most on the Richmond board seem to be more bullish on McAuliffe than Ross)

Nick Bryan (Essendon) is about 300k and reasonably likey to have the number 1 ruck role
Interesting

Currently have Flynn pencilled in a one of my ridiculous midpricers but I do have the cash on hand to change to Bryan

Essendon have a worse bye ditch than WCE I’m pretty sure (irrelevant if Flynn isn’t the Eagles’ number one ruck.

Bryan’s interesting because rucks are really dependent on having good midfields and Essendon’s is a lower tier group.

With the amount of 200k ish midfield rookies and lots of best 18 early I’m thinking guns and rookies might be very viable. Although most will have the same forward line.

Which is annoying because I like me some 300k ish midpricer rookies

Agree

My first draft is much more G & R than previous years.

Yeah, was the recollection, glad memory actually served for once, was pretty sure but not 100% anymore....

Coniglio and Cumming are the two mid pricers that stand out for me outside of Mills and Daniel.

If Cumming is taking kick outs for Adelaide he’s 25 points unders. Coniglio had a shitload of subbing from injuries last year, his lowest averaging season since 2013 (outside of 2021 where he played 5 games with injury).

We just have to wait and see if Cumming ends up on a WING 😨

I've had a good look at the numbers and have decided that I'm starting Shai Bolton next year.
He only scored 3 Tons this year and word was that he was already out of the Tigers so his heart wasn't there.

Interesting is his numbers previous years:

2020 15 Games Average 86 & 6 x 100+ scores
2021 20 Games Average 84 & 7 x 100+ scores
2022 22 Games Average 87 & 8 x 100+ scores
2023 23 Games Average 97 & 8 x 100+ scores
2024 22 Games Average 77 & 3 x 100+ scores

I personally think he will dominate as a Mid/Fwd at Freo and with 12 home games he could well get 10x100+ scores.
He is definitely a confidence player and back at his home state with family and a good club he will dominate.

I feel like GWS are moving on from Cogs.

Lots of good options in the forward line but he’s definitely in consideration

I posted in one of there’s threads (I forget which one) that having the flex player makes taking a high variance player like Bolton much more attractive

It does to a degree. Lots of risk reward there. If you have an injury and a low variance you can loose out vs a more stable player

Talking Forward line only who would be a more stable player in the low $400k range or under?

Right now pre season. mcrae/Bailey smith/Daniel are getting lots of love.

Doesn’t matter though You will likely have 6-8 rookie scores in that 23.

Once at full premium and looking for an F6 type. I’d assume a fallen premium who’s gotten DPP during the season but is playing midfield.

Trust your judgement/players you like. I just don’t think it’s something to worry about much early

I used a similar line of thinking when I thought I was grabbing a couple of bargains - Bolton and Punchy for roughly $810k in round 13 or thereabouts. The plan was to loop those two and Curnow at F5/6 to try a snag the best score (worked at least once when Punchy went to town and jagged a 154).

A monumental failure of sorts.

There is a lot of value to be had in Bolton if he fits your structure - He has a favourable bye, will be playing in a better team?, will have a point to prove?, and adds a POD to their mix (as a Walters replacement perhaps?)

What do we think about Harley Reid? Usually there is the 2nd year blues factor but i dont really see it happening with him. He put in some very impressive performances towards the end of last season and surely he is fitter with another pre season under his belt. Does he get enough midfield time? Awkward price but i see upside
