When you say ‘style of play’, do you mean he can take an overhead/contested grab, like Moore, Elliot, Hill, Betts, Cyril etc etc etc can/could?
He is more of a leading forward. Similar to Mark Williams.

Some of my pix from today.

The Eastern Ranges connection.
High pressure, high intensity tandem.

Hawthorn training session - Monday 20th of January
No shows - none
Rehab group - Blanck, Mraz, Moore and Lewis
Frost and Ginnivan did drills. Frost then ran, while Ginni did some lighter match work.

We had some Box Hill players there who were involved in the match Sims.

Ky Burgoyne, Goy Jiath and Kobe Williams were at training. Kobe played in the match simulation at half back and looked really good. Quick clean hands and excellent decision making.

Max Ramsden stood out in the match simulation. He was in the forward line as a 2nd key tall. He set Newcombe up with an excellent handball in congestion, took two excellent marks and kicked one goal and hit the post with the other.

Newcombe played the match simulation as a forward and he was incredible. Kicked one and had a goal assist. Will be interesting how often he plays forward this year.

Croc kicked a goal at half forward and had some time on a win opposed to Massimo D'Ambrosio.

Both Hustwaite and Mackenzie continued their strong run of form in the middle.

Josh Ward played inside midfield for the Gold team and had a superb clean break away from a centre bounce after a Worpel handball. He then hit a lovely kick that found Croc in space.

Jack Gunston worked his way all around the field and was notable for his ability to get up the field and help out before delivering into the forward 50.

Did a drill about finding space and taking marks to draw defenders - Sam kept hammering to the group that you take the easy option available.

Mitch Lewis was kicking goals from the boundary and slotted two from an acute angle. He looks in sensational order.

Calsher was down and walking the grounds again and looked in good order. He even kicked the footy to himself a few times. He said he is feeling good but has to wait for the scans.

Battle and Seamus ran laps today as part of load management. Both didn't partake in the match simulation.

How did Cody Anderson go was he playing forward again, I feel he could be this generation's Poppy while Watson is this generation's Cyril, in different ways.

CHALLENGE!

Name the person in the photo. All have been a part of the Hawks pre-season.

I particularly liked the 1st photo of the slightly melted Madam Tussaud's-like wax figure, but the chinless 2nd photo is also fun.
Photo 4 shows an angelic like glow behind his head and so had to be included.

Photo 5 seemed like it might be difficult in concept... alas his quality refused to be unseen.

Be clear, there are no "winners" in this challenge. It is just a challenge.

Thanks for all the reports and photos.

Where is weddle playing in the match sims / what group is he training in? Down back or up the ground? A lot have him penciled in on wing or even up forward but from reports to date doesn’t seem that’s he’s really training for either?

Yes, I badly want to know these things too.

Weddle being training almost exclusively in defence so far.

I know the coaching staff have infinitely more idea what's going on than what I do, but I find this interesting.

Medium to tall backs we have available to us at the start of the season: Battle, Barass, Sic, Scrim, Weds, Frosty....

Medium to tall forwards we have available to us at the start of this year: Chol, Gunners, Scaife, possibly Ramma.

Hmmmm.....

Clearly Hardwick isn't Curnow, but would be a pretty hard match up to figure what type to play on him. Definitely plays taller, and adds some good aggression up in our forward half. Also he was deadly accurate with his set shots which shouldn't be under-rated. Chol, Gunston, and Hardwick is on the smaller side for the 'three talls', but when you combine with Watson, Moore, Ginnivan, CMac and potentially Breust sub, could cause more than a few headaches in an unpredictable way. If we bring the ball to ground more often than not its a very dangerous mix.

Watson and Moore are both pretty strong on the lead. The former in particular is an impossible matchup when leading out to balls kicked into space.

Adding Hardwick into the mix means that oppositions really need to have two small defenders that are strong defenders on the lead at any one time.

Personally I'd rather see Hardwick play as a defender primarily; as he is one of the very best small defenders in the league. But sending him, Battle or Sicily forward throughout games could really throw opponents match-ups off.

I don't want to keep harping on about Jai but c'mon. From the latest video the club put out, look at the absolute size of the unit. A great indicator of someone's base level of strength is the size of their hands (inb4 TWO OF THEM!!) and their wrists. No wonder blokes bounce off him like he's made out of granite.

If both Weddle and CJ are training with the backline unit then how are we going to fit all of - Weddle, Scrimshaw, CJ, Battle, Frost, Barrass, Sicily, Amon, Impey and Hardwick in the same side?

And who will play on the opposite wing to D'Ambrosio?

Weddle appears to be training with the forwards at times too.

Looks as built as rugby league players - absolute weapon!

Players like Newk and Petracca that are built like rugby league wingers pushing 100kg yet can run 14+ Kms a game are so valuable.

That combination of size and endurance is hard to beat. Plenty of players can slim down and be endurance athletes and plenty can pack on the kilos to be power athletes but not many can do both.

I'm guessing they are born with a higher than normal aerobic capacity that lets them still cover that many Kms at their size.

We also have Serong, McCabe and Mraz available as tall defenders. I suspect we see new faces playing tall forward early in the season given Lewis and Dear are out.

But it's not as big a shuffle around as people are making it out to be. From the side that played the elimination final only Dear is unavailable.

The way i see it. Sicily or Weddle will replace Dear in the forward line and Barrass and Battle replace Frost and Sicily/Weddle in defence.
