As I said on another thread, the flexibility/versatility we have at our disposal right now is beyond anything I have ever seen in 50+ years of watching footy....We also have Serong, McCabe and Mraz available as tall defenders. I suspect we see new faces playing tall forward early in the season given Lewis and Dear are out.
But it's not as big a shuffle around as people are making it out to be. From the side that played the elimination final only Dear is unavailable.
The way i see it. Sicily or Weddle will replace Dear in the forward line and Barrass and Battle replace Frost and Sicily/Weddle in defence.
Barely an ounce of puppy fat left on him and he's gained a fair bit of muscle at the same time. His professionalism is off the charts, he's completely internalised Sam's teachings and Sam's learnings from his pathway into the AFL - and as good as Sam was, Jai has so many more athletic and physical tools. Still only 23.Jai looks like a different bloke. Body shape has changed dramatically.
May as well start engraving the cup now then.As I said on another thread, the flexibility/versatility we have at our disposal right now is beyond anything I have ever seen in 50+ years of watching footy....
They all hide in Jai Newcombe's shirt when they first runout no one will notice. He lets them out one at a time.If both Weddle and CJ are training with the backline unit then how are we going to fit all of - Weddle, Scrimshaw, CJ, Battle, Frost, Barrass, Sicily, Amon, Impey and Hardwick in the same side?
And who will play on the opposite wing to D'Ambrosio?
It's coming. It may or may not be this year, or next year, but it's on its way....May as well start engraving the cup now then.
Worth noting that in the recent past I recall hearing Dimma campaigning to play forward more in which I've never really heard Sic do. I'm sure both will roll through there a fair bit depending on matchups. Also worth keeping in mind that it was also planned last season for Dimma to play forward a lot more but then Sic went down and I think Impey did to which scuttled those plans. We also have Serong, McCabe and Mraz available as tall defenders. I reckon the reserves team we used to roll out in the 80s (and Carlton's then, too) were stuffed with AFL talent that the bottom teams of that era would have loved in their senior sides. But in these more balanced times you are absolutely right. Our depth is remarkable and all the more so when you consider how thin we seemed to be for quality players just two seasons ago! The kids have come on, the recruiting had mostly been excellent and we've retained the better players from 2020, with the net result that suddenly good players are everywhere and now a number of AFL- level players are going to miss selection every week.As I said on another thread, the flexibility/versatility we have at our disposal right now is beyond anything I have ever seen in 50+ years of watching footy....
I remeber our reserves won the flag in 85 it contained such players as Byrne, Eade, G Dear, Knights and Buckenara. Carlton's team that day contained similar senior players that day.I reckon the reserves team we used to roll out in the 80s (and Carlton's then, too) were stuffed with AFL talent that the bottom teams of that era would have loved in their senior sides. Winston Churchill once said you can never be guaranteed success, you can only deserve it. The club is doing all it can to deserve it again.
I was there that day, by far the best part.....I remeber our reserves won the flag in 85 it contained such players as Byrne, Eade, G Dear, Knights and Buckenara. Carlton's team that day contained similar senior players that day.
I’m no physio, but does Lewis potentially seem ahead of schedule? Running and goal kicking this early feel like good signs but I’m sure the club will be extra cautious with himHawthorn training session - Monday 20th of January
No shows - none
Rehab group - Blanck, Mraz, Moore and Lewis
Frost and Ginnivan did drills. Frost then ran, while Ginni did some lighter match work.
We had some Box Hill players there who were involved in the match Sims.
Ky Burgoyne, Goy Jiath and Kobe Williams were at training. Kobe played in the match simulation at half back and looked really good. Quick clean hands and excellent decision making.
Max Ramsden stood out in the match simulation. He was in the forward line as a 2nd key tall. He set Newcombe up with an excellent handball in congestion, took two excellent marks and kicked one goal and hit the post with the other.
Newcombe played the match simulation as a forward and he was incredible. Kicked one and had a goal assist. Will be interesting how often he plays forward this year.
Croc kicked a goal at half forward and had some time on a win opposed to Massimo D'Ambrosio.
Both Hustwaite and Mackenzie continued their strong run of form in the middle.
Josh Ward played inside midfield for the Gold team and had a superb clean break away from a centre bounce after a Worpel handball. He then hit a lovely kick that found Croc in space.
Jack Gunston worked his way all around the field and was notable for his ability to get up the field and help out before delivering into the forward 50.
Did a drill about finding space and taking marks to draw defenders - Sam kept hammering to the group that you take the easy option available.
Mitch Lewis was kicking goals from the boundary and slotted two from an acute angle. He looks in sensational order.
Calsher was down and walking the grounds again and looked in good order. He even kicked the footy to himself a few times. He said he is feeling good but has to wait for the scans.
Battle and Seamus ran laps today as part of load management. Both didn't partake in the match simulation.

If Collingwood were able to win the premiership a couple of years ago with Mihocek, Elliott, De Goey, Cox and others as their main goal scorers then there’s no reason why we can’t.We really need Lewis in 2025 if we are to be serious contenders. It's possible to win without him.
But I'd feel a lot happier if he plays. We're a little low on KPFs.
Genuine smokey for the brownlow IMO

Wouldn’t a Smokey be someone who no one thought had a chance ??Genuine smokey for the brownlow IMO
Do we need one? Can we afford our season to be over so early again?Any indication of when the intra club match will be?
Yep, I’m counting on that.We have another 5 years to keep our record intact
So is Goy Jiath apart of our NGA?
