I feel this is a watershed year. I honestly can see us winning anywhere between 2-12 games.

I can see clarko weaving his magic but also crumbling from all the pressure of what's happened.

I can see LDU staying or going.

I can see Chom playing fwd or back.

I can see us using pick 2 on FOS or trading it for talls.

Whatever happens, if we get more ticks then crosses, I wouldn't want to sleep on us as early as 2025.... many have mentioned it, but there is 4 or 5 games we win with parker/daniel/darling.

Whatever happens, gonna be a hell of ride!

I really hope so, man. I'm feeling similar due to the new recruits' arrival and yet another pre-season into our young stars. I just cannot do going 10+ weeks at a time without wins. No more. We need to be a chance in most, if not all games. Brisbane will belt us in Hobart, whatever. But we cannot be losing by ten goals to the likes of the Dees, Crows, Saints, Bombers, Suns. Enough.

Round 1 Chom will need to play back

Naughton - Logue
Darcy - Chom
JUH - Corr

Round 2 against the Dee’s send him forward

Petty - Logue
JVR - Corr

If your want to play Dawson as well you can. Though I would be surprised.

Point is maybe settling Chom isn’t possible this year?

Darling gives us enough cover to keep him back if needed.

This is why Dawson needs as much time in defence as possible

He was recruited for the Darcy, Kings, McKays of the league.

He’s 203cm with some of the longest arms measured in the last 7 years at the combine. His standing reach is only millimeters lower than 207cm Taylor Goad

He’s a CHB with more length than Harris Andrews

Larkey found him an absolute nightmare at training in drills from the very first day of preseason as a fresh draftee

💯.
I do feel this could go disastrously. But also flip side we could massive if we get it right. Real sliding doors this year. Probably because no more excuses.

I'm with you on this. In defense he struggles one-on-one. I think a forward / ruck role suits him and allows him to play with more intensity, which is one of his biggest strengths. He just looks more natural as a forward with the way he attacks the ball. It also means we don't have to watch Teakle try to ruck.
I agree on the ruck comment. He is streets ahead of CCJ, Teakle and Pink when he goes into the ruck. So much more agile and creative, and doesn't get pushed out of the contest as easily as they all do.

I go into every season optimistic, then, get let down. I am going to do it differently in 2025. I am going to use reverse psychology and think we are going to be awful. Then the opposite should happen 🤞

Yep, " watershed " We just have to show something 2025.

Your issue with him as a forward is very fixable with experience. He has sky-high potential as a forward. He looked absolutely freakish for a stretch against Carlton. That could become more consistent with time.

His high intercept numbers papered over some weaknesses as an actual defender.

I don't think that an intercept marking defender is as valuable the type of forward that he could be, which is more than a pure goal kicker.

Your issues with him as a defender can also be worked on with more than 13 games in the position.

He's played as a forward most of his life.

He doesn't need to be an absolutely elite stopper in that role, once we have 2 other qualities defenders around him. The priority should be to develop Dawson as the #1 defender and Logue as the #2 lockdown defender and then release Comben as the interceptor, the way all of Melbourne, Collingwood and Brisbane have done with Lever, Moore and Andrews over the years. GWS have started doing it with Taylor also as Buckley has taken the #1 stopping role at various points.

I disagree regarding your last point.

There's only about 3 key forwards (Cameron, Curnow and Hogan) I'd take over the best key defenders (Taylor, Andrews, McGovern, Moore) in the league if I had the choice. As those key defenders generate as many scores and prevent as many scores as any B+/A grade forward the way the game is played these days.

He was already operating on Taylor and Andrews level for over 3 months statistically. I don't think he ever achieves anywhere near the Curnow and Cameron level as a forward personally.

This reminds me very much of the early discussions with Collingwood fans and Darcy Moore. Sure he'd be an OK forward, but he's potentially an absolutely elite key defender (i.e the best intercepting key defender in the league).

So if we play Larkey, Darling and Chom forward, who takes the relief ruck role?

McKercher looks bigger and stronger, ready to take impact and he just ran a 2km PB

I run a lot myself, and am definitely a bigger guy for a runner so can somewhat relate to 178-185cm players. I find it remarkable that a kid who was already an elite 2km runner (by team sport standards - he ran a 6:06 2km TT at the combine) can put weight on and improve an already great time.

Daicos won the whole club 2km a few years back with 6:36 - so he's minimum 30 seconds clear of Daicos and I do see a lot of similarity in the two players.

Wouldn't be surprised to see an AA at HB if he plays a full year there, but suspect he'll get midfield time and probably dominate there too.

Eh? Maybe for intercept marks. Ben McKay was posting similar numbers, but was better 1 vs 1. For defensive 1v1 loss Charlie is going at 42%. That is basically the worst in the comp. Weitering was 11%.

Yeah we did allow more opposition inside 50s than any other side. It does tend to lead to some slightly inflated defensive numbers.

Yes,

Playing in historically one of the worst i50 and defensive sides in history. His 1vs1's tended to be more isolated with quick ball movement.

Tom Barrass and Jack Buckley were also 35% and 30% from a hell of alot more 1v1's.

Ben McKay ran at 33% this season.

McGovern ran at 25%.

His other aspects more than made up for trying to defend a tsunami in one of the worst sides ever.

So the rest of the squad is officially due back monday nov 25 but obviously can come in early for skills and gym sessions as some have as per Caleb Daniel

Tbh

All 3 ofDawson, Chom and Logue sounds good either forward or back
A big difference to the start of last year is we're going in with (touch wood) all tall defenders healthy.

Just have to pick 3 of: Logue, Corr, Comben (F/D), K.Dawson, W. Dawson, Pink.

Personally, my guess would be two scenarios:

Chom plays foward - Logue, Corr, K. Dawson
Chom plays back - Logue, Corr, Chom

W. Dawson keeps developing in the 2s and Pink is depth.

Yeah, but his intercept marking numbers are more inflated by the number of entries than the loss percentage.

And from an eye test, his performance against Sam Day stood out as something none of the top defenders would have copped.

It would be interesting to see who turns up earlier than they have to and who doesn't.

Where did he run the 6:06? He did compete at the National combine.

With Sphynx on this one, Comben looked so much more natural at CHB.

He excites in forward trials but something feels unconvincing about him being able to hold down a KF post week in, week out.

Whereas he just looks right as a patrolling tall defender. +1 keep him there.

Reminds of Drew who can play any tall role but just looked right as a key forward.

Yeah keep him back. We need to fix our awful i50s first.
