Last year in the first 8 rounds English went

119 vs Gawn
138 vs Witts
124 vs West Coast
117 vs Geelong
58 vs Goldy and Draper
114 vs Marshall
134 vs Jackson and Darcy
135 vs Meek

8 games at over 117. Against good rucks too. In general play I think the new rules hurt him, but in SC I think it was more the lack of pre season.

Just looking at his numbers a bit more. 112 average pre bye, 100 post bye. Only gameplay change we had was Lobb going back and Richards into the middle so that wouldn’t effect him.

Played good rucks in both post and pre bye. Don’t think he averages 128 again but he also doesn’t have to for him to be a good bye.

Also think we sometimes fall into the trap of a ruck has a “down” year after going nuts and they can’t get back there. Think almost every ruck fluctuates a bit.

Gawn went 102, 118, 91, 127 when breaking out. I understand the risk but youd pretty much cook your season (like many did with English last year) if you got Xerri at his price and he doesn’t back it up, while English returns to 110+.
Or you go both because you think Xerri can back it up and English goes back to his best

Read somewhere WB had significantly less stoppages last year. English is terrible at HTA but got a lot of possessions around stoppages, so this hurt his scoring. Maybe ran out of steam due to a reduced preseason. Darcy becoming more influential wouldn't have helped.

Maybe Bevo finally stopped him getting the cowardly cheap touches at half back too?

Apparently he's set to have a big role mopping up across HB in 2025

2 141s against English skews that a lot. No doubt he could put up a massive score on english and be averaging 115 again from those first 5 but i’m happy to bet against it. He averaged 101 against the other 4. And i think you’re underestimating the tackle numbers. 8 per game is massive and has only really been done by defensive mids. If that drops by 2 we’re looking at a loss of 8 points per game

Dude leave it, let them pick Xerri.

Anti-PODing him makes way too much sense.

Essendon spooked Dogs that round as well, kept them to 8 or 9 goals and won by 5 or 6 goals IIRC. Think Goldy and Draper did a number on him.

Completely pointless tweet.

Pete should have just said "Boyd is a ruck, but I don't know what they will do"
The point I took was Boyd's speed between contests .....do Saints want simply a Ruck, or is that around the ground involvement by Marshall, just too important

Do you think they want a ruck with the same strengths as Marshall, or someone a bit different?
I think ideally Saints want to be able to better manage Marshall thru the season .....IMO that requires a ruck partner that has the ability to play fwd ....a Ruck only player, IMO reduces the Saints flexibility

we seem to be really keen to give king a solid partner (no disprespects to membrey/owens) in roma (sharmans not up to 2nd tall yet)

kings bulked up and looking pretty weapon like this pre season and will prob play more chf than in past. im liking how we we look to set up this year across the forwards/backs/mids etc.

I think Boyd's an awesome pick up and is up to afl, has his weeknesses obv like most of the fringe ruck types, but i'd like to see him have a crack at taking a fair chunk of our ruck duties and trust RTB to have a plan around those weeknesses.

has his chance to have a nice hit for us SC similar to flynn/briggs/pruess etc have in recent times

It just depends on whether you believe that by potentially reducing Roma's around the ground strength, to plug a weakness up FWD .....weighing up all the pro's and Con's puts St Kilda ahead on the balance sheet ?

It's a similar situation to the Rankine conundrum .....he's a great finisher, but having him at the mid coalface sets up more opportunities .....you can't kick goals if the ball doesn't get down there
